NYR TODAY Fri 9/29: Rangers vs Devils Wrap Up, TDINYRH

RANGERS DEFEAT DEVILS 3-1

Pirri scores twice in Rangers Win

UFA signining Brandon Pirri all but secured his spot on the 2016-2017 roster picking up his 3rd goal in 2 games as he scored twice including a power play goal for the Rangers last night at MSG. Pirri also picked up an assist on defenseman John Gilmour's first period power play goal. Gilmour also picked up an assist on Pirri's 3rd period power play goal.
The Rangers special teams once again looked sharp going 2 for 6 on the power play and killing off all 6 penalty kills. Goaltenders Antti Raanta 15 saves on 16 shots and Mackenzie Skapski 13 saves on 13 shots looked solid in net. Skapski looked great once again in his 2nd game taking over for Raanta at the midpoint of the second period just after Raanta surrendered the games only goal after the Rangers penalty kill.
The line of Kevin Hayes, Rick Nash and Jimmy Vesey looked good last night with Vesey and Hayes showing some speed and net presence throughout the game. Vesey took a slight beating last night catching a slash just 27 seconds into the opening period from Devils Nick Lappin to send the Rangers to an early power play and then in the third period aftr rushing the net Vesey was the receipient of a wicked cross check by NJ's McWilliams sending him face first into the crossbar. Neither Vesey, Hayes or Nash made the score sheet in the win.

The Rangers will once again face New Jersey on Saturday in Newark, NJ at the Prudential Center.

NEW YORK RANGERS GAME DAY

PRESEASON MATCH UP: NEW YORK RANGERS (1-0) VS NEW JERSEY DEVILS (2-1)
Madison Square Garden, 7:00 PM MSG, MSG+

Coming off a preseason opener win vs the Islanders, the Rangers will face the NJ Devils at Madison Square Garden tonight, 7:00 PM for the first of 2 preseason games the next coming on Saturday, October 1.

Highly touted prospect Jimmy Vesey will make his preseason debut for the Rangers on a line with childhood friend Kevin Hayes and veteran NHL'er Rick Nash. The line could be tagged as the "something to prove" line. Vesey looks to show he was worth the hype and continue his superb play from the Traverse City Tournament. Hayes will look to prove last season was a "sophomore jinx" and he can be an every day player and contribute. While Nash, coming off his worst season in a Blueshirt looks to turn his game around and show he still belongs as a NY Ranger.

Goaltenders Antti Raanta and Mackenzie Skapski will split time in net tonight for the Rangers.

New York Rangers Lineup vs New Jersey:

Forward Lines:
Vesey-Hayes-Nash

Few players symbolized the Rangers` transition from the Original Six era to the booming age of NHL expansion like Walter Tkaczuk, a crafty center who spent a remarkable 13 full seasons with the Blueshirts.

Today in NYR History September 29, 1997:

The Rangers acquire Pat LaFontaine from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round pick in the 1998 NHL Draft and future considerations.

In 67 regular season games with the Rangers LaFontaine scored 23 goals and 39 assists for 62 points. During his one season with the Rangers, he tied for the team lead in goals scored, and recorded his 1,000th career NHL point.
In a game against the Ottawa Senators on March 16, 1998, LaFontaine accidentally collided with teammate Mike Keane and suffered another concussion. LaFontaine missed the remainder of the season and all of the next season, announcing his retirement formally on October 12, 1999
LaFontaine is one of five players in NHL history to skate for all three teams based in the state of New York. The others were Mike Donnelly, Jason Dawe, Martin Biron, and Taylor Pyatt. Unique amongst them, LaFontaine played his entire career in the state of New York while Donnelly, Pyatt, Biron and Dawe all played for additional teams outside the state in their careers. LaFontaine once joked about it, saying "I think I'm the only player in history who has been traded twice and hasn't had to change his license plate.

NYR TODAY Wed. 9/28: Post Game Recap, TDINYRH

RANGERS DEFEAT ISLANDERS 5-2 IN PRESEASON OPENER

Bolstered by a 3 point night for newly acquired Mika Zibanejad, goal and 2 assists the Rangers opened their 2016 preseason with a victory over the cross town rival NY Islanders. The line consisting of Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and rookie Pavel Buchnevich counted for a total of 5 points on the night. Kreider tallied a goal and an assist. Although he didn't show up on the scoresheet Buchnevich had an overall good game showing flashes of why he is touted as the Rangers number one prospect. A little time adjusting to NHL play and he should start producing on a regular basis.

Backed by Magnus Hellberg, 12 saves and Mackenzie Skapski 15 saves along with special teams doing a fantastic job, 2 power play goals and 5 for 5 on the penalty kill the Rangers looked ready to bring the team into a new direction heading into the 90th season in New York. UFA signing of defenseman Adam Clendening looks like a coup for GM Jeff Gorton as he collected 2 assists and was on the ice for most of the Rangers scoring, his name being mentioned numerous times during the game for superb play.

The Rangers scoring was rounded out by Brandon Pirri's power play goal, a blast by 2nd year pro D-Man Dylan McIlrath and finally an empty net goal by veteran Dan Girardi.

Rangers Josh Jooris was pulled from the game with what was described as a "slight" groin pull and will be replaced on the practice squad with one of the players that was demoted yesterday to Hartford Wolf Pack.

The Rangers will play their second game of preseason on Thursday 9/29 hosting the New Jersey Devils at 7:00 PM.

Today in NYR History September 28, 1926:

Rangers purchase the contract of Frank Boucher from Vancouver in the WHL.
Boucher played for the Rangers until he retired in 1937–38. Boucher centered the famous Bread Line with the brothers Bill and Bun Cook, and together they helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in 1928 and 1933, also reaching the Finals in 1932.
Frank was not only a brilliant forward, but was also one of the game's classiest. Lady Byng, wife of Viscount Byng, the Governor-General of Canada, donated a trophy to be awarded to the NHL's "most gentlemanly player." While playing for the New York Rangers, Boucher won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy 7 times in 8 years. He was then given the trophy outright, and Lady Byng donated another trophy to the NHL.
The Rangers hired him to coach the New York Rovers, a minor-league team that also played at Madison Square Garden, as his apprenticeship to coaching the Rangers. When general manager Lester Patrick made the decision to retire from coaching prior to the 1939–40 season, he hired Boucher, who led his Ranger club to the last Stanley Cup. The franchise would be in existence for 68 seasons before they won a Cup without Boucher being directly involved.
After finishing first in the NHL's regular season in 1942, the Rangers lost in the playoffs to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Soon they became victims of the military draft of World War II and went into a steep decline. In 1943–44 NHL season the New York Rangers were so bad that Boucher came out of retirement for 15 games to play where he recorded 14 points. The Rangers finished the 50 game season with only 6 wins. From 1940 to 1972 they reached the Stanley Cup Finals only once.
When Patrick retired, Frank took over as general manager. He got the Rangers into the playoffs in 1947–48 with his trade to get Buddy O'Connor and Frank Eddolls. He stepped down from coaching to concentrate on his manager's job and hired Lynn Patrick, Lester's son and an ex-teammate, to coach the Rangers, and Lynn came very close to winning the Stanley Cup in 1950, proving Boucher astute in hiring him as coach. But the Rangers were an aging team, and eroded. Lynn Patrick resigned to go to Boston, and neither Neil Colville nor Bill Cook, also former teammates of Boucher's, could get the Rangers into the playoffs. General John Kilpatrick, the Rangers' owner, thought about replacing Boucher, but he held off.
During the 1945–46 season, Boucher became the first coach to use two goalies regularly. Alternating Charlie Rayner and Jim Henry every game, and later, every four to six minutes, he proved the usefulness of having two goalies.
Frank went back behind the bench in 1953–54, but could not get the Rangers into the playoffs. He then hired Muzz Patrick, another son of Lester and ex-teammate, to coach the team, but the Rangers won only 17 games and missed the playoffs again. So General Kilpatrick had a talk with Frank and reluctantly expressed that Frank could not build the Rangers into a winner, and recommended Frank resign as general manager. Frank thought it over, realizing that it was better than being fired. He then typed his resignation and handed it in to the General, ending his 29-year association with the Rangers.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958. In 1998, he was ranked number 61 on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players. His uniform number 7 hangs in the rafters of Madison Square Garden, although it was retired for a later Ranger, Rod Gilbert. Although later Rangers such as Gilbert and Mark Messier have been more honored by recent fans, Boucher's status as the star of two Ranger Stanley Cups and the coach behind another marks him, except perhaps for team builder Lester Patrick, as the greatest Ranger of them all.
In 1974, Boucher wrote When the Rangers Were Young, a book about his experiences with the old-time Broadway Blueshirts, giving him one last moment of fame during his lifetime. He died of cancer on December 12, 1977 in the town of Kemptville, Ontario, near Ottawa at the age of 76.

Matt Gilroy is selected as the recipient of the 2009 Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award, given to the Rangers’ best rookie in training camp.

NY Rangers Training Camp Day 1 Notebook

by Matt Calamia @MattCalamia / NewYorkRangers.com

Last season is behind them, but there's still some frustration to how the 2015-16 season ended for the Rangers, with many stating the campaign ended prematurely.

Stalwarts for the Rangers over the last several years, both on offense and defense, said they feel they have something to prove in training camp after last season.

"I think so, yeah," said defenseman Marc Staal when asked if there was a chip. "I think we're a group that me and a lot of other guys have a feeling like we almost have to prove ourselves over again. With the expectations of our group over the last few years, you have that feeling that you're supposed to be there at a high level and we weren't last year. I think everyone is excited to come into camp and have that chip where we know the way we can play and it's about performing and doing it on the ice more consistently this year. We're looking forward to it."

Forward Rick Nash, who has led the Rangers in goals in three of his four seasons with New York, said he felt his spot in the lineup was not guaranteed and that he'd have to earn his ice time with a strong showing in training camp.

"I know for me, as I get to the tail end of my career and you see these young guys come in with high expectations, you just know you have to prove yourself," Nash said. "Especially after the year I had last year, I'm here at camp to show that I belong on this team."

Head coach Alain Vigneault said he was happy to hear Nash and others feel that way, and that it's crucial for Nash to return to the player he was in 2014-15, when he finished third in the NHL with 42 goals.

"It's the right attitude to have," Vigneault said of Nash and others feeling pressure in camp. "A player should want to come here and earn the ice time. In Rick's case, we talked about it [Thursday]. [He is a] solid two-way player but there's no going away from the fact that we need his offense. We need him to be on the scoresheet. We need him to be a force offensively.

"That offense that he brings," Vigneault later added, "he's one of the elite offensive players in the game and we need that from him."

Dylan McIlrath is one of the players battling for a roster spot on the blueline, and he'll have a familiar face in new Assistant Coach Jeff Beukeboom there to learn from.

McIlrath spent three seasons playing for Beukeboom in Connecticut/Hartford of the American Hockey League, where Beukeboom ran the defense. McIlrath said he's looking forward to working with the former Ranger again in New York.

"That was great," McIlrath said. "When I found out the news that [Ulf Samuelsson] was leaving, I was super pumped to hear that Jeff was getting the position just because it's another familiar face. We worked together for three years. He helped mold me into the defenseman and person I am today. We have a very good relationship. He's a guy I can just step into his office and have a conversation and it's like talking to a peer or a friend. I'm very excited to work with him and I think he'll do great here."

Vigneault said he expects Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan and J.T. Miller to be in camp on Monday, but not hit the ice until possibly Tuesday or Wednesday, though he said all three said they "don't want to take a lot of time off. They want to get back at it as quick as they can.

NY RANGERS TRAINING CAMP OPENS, VIGNEAULT SPEAKS WITH MEDIA

Alain Vigneault met with the media on Thursday on the first day of Training Camp 2016

  • On the roster being younger, "We are at the golf tournament yesterday and fans and players that I have talked with since I have been back here, you feel the energy. You feel a refreshed group, not just the players, but the fans and the staff. Everyone is excited about the players that we brought in from the veterans to some of the younger players that everyone has been talking about that will get a great opportunity to make this team. We have a lot of good decisions to make moving forward. There will be some great internal competition for ice time and roles on the team. It should make for a great training camp."
  • On Buchnevich and Vesey, "both their first experience as far as a pro camp. Both had real good games in Traverse City, I think that will help them coming into this camp. They just gotta play to their strengths. Highly skilled players. Our staff and management really believe that we have two good young prospects there. It's up to us as coaches to help develop them and to put them in situations where they can be successful. They are both good offensive players and we need to put them in those situations and give them the opportunity to show us and their teammates what they can do. We will make the decisions that need to be made."
  • Have expectations changed for the RFAs signed, "I do expect more. Those are young players and if we are going to get better as a group those players have to get better individually. The organization has shown those guys a lot of confidence in them by giving them those contracts and we gave it to them because we know that there is upside there and those players want bigger roles and want more minutes and want to prove that they can be impactful players and play a role that helps a team win. There is not doubt that those three players want that and want to be counted on and want to help this organization and team win."
  • On JT Miller, "I really don't think that it has much to do with the coaching staff, it has to do with JT figuring it out. I mentioned that a few times, players at some point as they are developing and getting mature they need to figure out what it takes to be a pro and I think that JT as time has gone by has figured it out. He knows he has to have a great attitude and committed to his conditioning and that he needs to come in every day and try and get a little bit better skill wise and knowledge wise. He has done that and I am very happy for him making the team and having the success he is having right now. I've gotta see the same thing when he comes back with the Rangers."
  • On the World Cup players, "I've been excited about the opportunity that they are getting. They get to play against the best in the world. I am very confident that they are all going to learn from this experience and bring some positives back to our group and share them with their teammates. The only guys that I have talked to, the only player that I have talked to, I talked to Step yesterday and he wanted to know what the plan was as far as coming back because obviously they are not moving ahead. I will wait until we talk to Mac and obviously we will give players who have been in that event a couple of days off because they have been going at it for close to 3 weeks and if they go to the finals then close to a month and we will give them the time here that they need to recover physically and mentally and hopefully they come back and bring something positive to our group."
  • On the defense, "I see there is obviously ice time available, there are roles available as far as Keith and Dan were a little bit more offensive oriented. There is opportunity there...for veteran guys like Ryan McDonagh, to take a little bit more to a young guy like Brady Skjei to take a little bit more, to Dylan. There are opportunities for defensemen who are coming to our camp to show their skill sets and to grab the opportunity and earn a spot on our team. I think about bringing Jeff on board with our coaching staff, I see a gentleman who has paid his dues and went from a player who worked hard to be a respected coach and now he is getting an opportunity with our coaching staff at another level. We have been working a long time, we had meetings this summer in mid-August where we went through our prep and our system and Jeff was a big part of bringing contributions to our discussions about where we want to go and what we want to do. I feel real good about him on board. I feel real good about my staff, we have been together for some time and there is good chemistry and communication. With all of that and with Jeff coming on board with this D group where we all know that there are a few guys there who have something to prove. It's going to be real positive for this group."
  • On # of games for Hank, "Part of our brainstorming in the summer was going through what some of the goalies who have won in past years and how many games they have played in the regular season and it seems like goalies who have won in the last few years are all between 50 and 58 games. I think when I first got here I wanted to keep Hank around 60 or something in an ideal world, in an ideal world it seems now that goalies who have won have played a little bit less than that. Is that feasible, can we do that? I think this year one of the challenges that all teams are going to have is the condensed schedule. The schedule for every team, with that 5-day break, makes it for a lot of days in a short amount of time. You are going to need two goalies that can play and does that go into Hank at 50 or 58. I'm talking to you and I haven't talked to Hank about it. I am just giving you the stats, all 30 head coaches will talk to their goalies and see how they feel. Stats wise it seems like it's running in that area. Is that something we will look for moving forward. Our biggest thing for Henrik, our number one, is asking how he feels, is he energized, etc. He will be coming back from the World Cup in the next little while and we will start with that first discussion and go from there."
  • On the battle for spots, "I would say that there is a battle for 5-6-7-8 on D. There are some guys there who are young players that need to prove that they belong and deserve the ice time. There is definitely, and I don't need to go through all of the good internal competition that we have, up front, but there is definitely some competition. We would like 3 lines that can score, have a fourth line where it could be maybe a little bit more defensive oriented or PKers. There is some battles there and I expect good battles in training camp and guys fighting for roles."
  • On Zibanejad, "Our scouts and management all felt that he was on the upswing. He has been in Ottawa for a few years, has been able to play PP, PK, 5 on 5, the speed is there, skill, youth. We believe that he is not fully developed yet and that with the right environment teammate and coaching wise that we can get more from Mika, Z as his teammates seem to be calling him now. We think we have a good young player we will be able to work with for a long time."
  • On Pirri, "Talking about a skilled player, noted for his offensive capabilities. Also talking about a player who has gone few quite a few teams in a short little while. Usually that grabs players attention, you only get so many kicks at the can. I've talked to him and explained to him the opportunity in front of him. I told him exactly what I am telling you, you only get so many kicks at the can in this league. I am sensing that we will have a highly motivated player to prove that he can make our team and contribute. Obviously his role would be more offensive, your looking at a player fighting to get into the top-nine and he has got training camp to prove he can play on our team."
  • On the PK, "we made a lot of our decisions...don't like going into the past but if you look at the players we have lost, a lot of those guys are guys who played on the PK. We need to develop some or our younger guys like Jesper, we need to develop a couple of other younger guys but we brought in some players like Grabner that we feel have the capabilities of playing on the PK and helping our team there. We all know that special teams are an important part of your team having success. We know we have to improve in that area and we are."
  • Expectations for this season, "our first goal doesn't change. First goal is always the same and that is to get into the playoffs. It's hard and it's demanding and we are probably playing in the toughest division in the NHL. Once you are in there, 16 teams all have the same opportunity. You look at last year, SJ and Pitt. At some point everyone was saying that Pitt was on the decline and then they won the Stanley Cup. SJ the year before doesn't even get into the playoffs, We have changed some pieces, some important pieces, added...I feel the energy. Everyone is looking forward to training camp, the demands of getting on the same page and opportunity to prove that they belong here."

Today in NYR History September 22, 1966:

Goaltender Mike Richter is born in Abington, PA.

Stanley Cup Champion: 1994
One of the the most popular players ever to wear the Rangers uniform, Mike Richter retired in September 2003 as the team`s all-time winningest goaltender with 301 victories. He later became only the third player in Blueshirts history to have his number retired, as No. 35 was hoisted to the Madison Square Garden rafters on Feb. 4, 2004.

Drafted out of the University of Wisconsin in the second round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, Richter first appeared in April 1989, making a one game cameo in the final playoff game against Pittsburgh. He made his regular-season debut the following October and went on to appear in 23 games with a 12-5-5 record in 1989-90.

In what was considered his official rookie season in 1990-91, Richter posted a 21-13-7 record, eclipsing the 20-win mark as a rookie. He then split the Rangers` goaltending duties with John Vanbiesbrouck through the 1992-93 season before staking his claim to the job on a permanent basis.

Another standout of the Rangers` magical 1993-94 championship team, Richter recorded numerous Blueshirt records on his way to backstopping his team to the Stanley Cup. He posted franchise bests in victories (42), goals against average (2.57), and save percentage (.910, since surpassed by Mike Dunham).

The Abington, Pa., native was a three time NHL All-Star in 1992, 1994 and 2000, and received the MVP award at the 1994 All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. In that game, Richter stopped a penalty shot on a deke to his stick side by Pavel Bure.

In what is one of the most hair-raising moments for Ranger fans, history repeated itself when Bure was awarded a penalty shot in Game 3 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. As Bure skated in, he deked in the same manner, and once again was stonewalled by an acrobatic Richter, who stuck his leg out and made the pad save.

"The Save" is one of many highlights from the Rangers` 1994 postseason still regarded as one of the great moments in franchise history. In 1994, Richter set franchise records for wins in a playoff season (16), most minutes in a playoff season (1,477) and most shutouts in a playoff season (four). In addition, his 2.07 goals-against average ranked third in the NHL that season and his .921 save percentage ranked fourth overall.

The life-long Ranger played nine more seasons on Broadway, during which time he appeared in the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, capturing the silver medal at Salt Lake City in 2002. He also led the U.S. to the 1996 World Cup of Hockey championship where he was named the tournament MVP.

While still an elite goaltender in the league, Ricther was forced to retire after playing only 13 games in 2002-03 due to repeated concussions. His legacy, however, has set a standard for excellence among all future Rangers goaltenders.
