Goaltender Mike Richter is born in Abington, PA.

One of the the most popular players ever to wear the Rangers uniform, Mike Richter retired in September 2003 as the team`s all-time winningest goaltender with 301 victories. He later became only the third player in Blueshirts history to have his number retired, as No. 35 was hoisted to the Madison Square Garden rafters on Feb. 4, 2004.
Drafted out of the University of Wisconsin in the second round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft, Richter first appeared in April 1989, making a one game cameo in the final playoff game against Pittsburgh. He made his regular-season debut the following October and went on to appear in 23 games with a 12-5-5 record in 1989-90.
In what was considered his official rookie season in 1990-91, Richter posted a 21-13-7 record, eclipsing the 20-win mark as a rookie. He then split the Rangers` goaltending duties with John Vanbiesbrouck through the 1992-93 season before staking his claim to the job on a permanent basis.
Another standout of the Rangers` magical 1993-94 championship team, Richter recorded numerous Blueshirt records on his way to backstopping his team to the Stanley Cup. He posted franchise bests in victories (42), goals against average (2.57), and save percentage (.910, since surpassed by Mike Dunham).
The Abington, Pa., native was a three time NHL All-Star in 1992, 1994 and 2000, and received the MVP award at the 1994 All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. In that game, Richter stopped a penalty shot on a deke to his stick side by Pavel Bure.
In what is one of the most hair-raising moments for Ranger fans, history repeated itself when Bure was awarded a penalty shot in Game 3 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. As Bure skated in, he deked in the same manner, and once again was stonewalled by an acrobatic Richter, who stuck his leg out and made the pad save.
"The Save" is one of many highlights from the Rangers` 1994 postseason still regarded as one of the great moments in franchise history. In 1994, Richter set franchise records for wins in a playoff season (16), most minutes in a playoff season (1,477) and most shutouts in a playoff season (four). In addition, his 2.07 goals-against average ranked third in the NHL that season and his .921 save percentage ranked fourth overall.
The life-long Ranger played nine more seasons on Broadway, during which time he appeared in the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, capturing the silver medal at Salt Lake City in 2002. He also led the U.S. to the 1996 World Cup of Hockey championship where he was named the tournament MVP.
While still an elite goaltender in the league, Ricther was forced to retire after playing only 13 games in 2002-03 due to repeated concussions. His legacy, however, has set a standard for excellence among all future Rangers goaltenders.
