The Rangers will open up a two-game road trip Thursday night in Dallas and could have some familiar faces back in the lineup.
Rick Nash (groin) and Matt Puempel (concussion) practiced Wednesday and both traveled with the team to Texas, though neither gave much information beyond stating they felt good after the practice.
The indication that possibly one - if not both - could be available came after practice when New York assigned forward Nicklas Jensen to Hartford (AHL). With the loss of Josh Jooris on Sunday via waivers, the Rangers currently have no spare forward, thus opening the door for either Nash or Puempel to join the lineup.
It is still unknown who will be between the pipes for the Rangers against Dallas tonight. Antti Raanta has started the last four games - winning the first three - and performed well in a loss Tuesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks at The Garden. He finished with 24 saves in the 2-1 defeat.
Henrik Lundqvist, though, has not played in nine days. Could Alain Vigneault go back to his No. 1 goaltender against one of the better offenses in the NHL? It remains to be seen.
Lundqvist has had success against the Stars in his career, going 7-4-0 with a 2.09 GAA and a .931 SV%. He's been even better on the road, going 4-1-0 with a .940 SV%.
Chris Kreider has three goals and an assist in five games against Dallas, while Derek Stepan has two goals and five points in eight career matches with the Stars.
Dallas is coming off a big 6-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday night. The Stars scored five goals in the third period to erase a 2-1 lead on their way to the victory. They're 12-13-6 (30 pts), and are tied for the second wild card in the Western Conference with Nashville and Los Angeles, though they've played three more games than both those teams.
Tyler Seguin is producing at a point-per-game pace with 10 goals and 21 assists in 31 games. Jamie Benn is not far behind with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points.
The problem for Dallas has been keeping pucks out of their net, as they've allowed the most goals in the NHL at 98 in 31 games this season.
The Stars have split time in goal between Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi this season, with Niemi picking up the win Tuesday against the Ducks. He's 6-3-3 with a 3.12 GAA and a .906 SV% in 13 starts. Lehtonen, meanwhile, is 6-10-3 with a 2.92 GAA and a .894 SV% with one shutout.
Dallas has the 17th-best power play in the NHL at 17.4 percent and the 28th ranked penalty kill at 76.6 percent.
