2018-19 Season In Review: Game Summaries

OCTOBER

Oct. 4, Rangers 2 vs. Predators 3 - After neither team tallied a goal in the first period, Nashville opened the scoring at 3:54 of the second period. Jesper Fast recorded the Rangers' first goal of the season at 7:37 of the second period to tie the game, but the Predators regained a one-goal lead in the third period and never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the contest. Pavel Buchnevich tallied a goal in the final minute of regulation. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 30 of 32 shots he faced in the contest.

Oct. 6, Rangers 1 at Sabres 3 - Buffalo opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period and extended its lead to two by recording another power play goal in the second period. Brett Howden registered his first career NHL goal/point in the third period to cut the Rangers' deficit in half, but the Sabres added an empty-net goal to earn the win. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 26 of 28 shots he faced.

Oct. 7, Rangers 5 at Hurricanes 8 - Jimmy Vesey opened the scoring 49 seconds into the contest and Chris Kreider extended the Rangers' lead to two at 6:02 of the first period. The Hurricanes tied the game before the end of the opening frame, and each team recorded two goals in the second period. Kreider's second goal of the game gave the Rangers a 5-4 lead in the third period, but Carolina responded by tallying four unanswered goals. In addition to Kreider, Vesey registered two goals in the contest for the Rangers.

Oct. 11, Rangers 3 vs. Sharks 2 (OT) - San Jose opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 4:31 of the first period. Brett Howden recorded a goal at 13:52 of the opening frame to tie the game, but the Sharks regained a one-goal lead in the second period. Brendan Smith tallied a goal to tie the game with 2:39 remaining in regulation, and Brady Skjei registered the game-winning goal in overtime. Henrik Lundqvist made 41 saves to earn the win, and David Quinn earned his first career win as an NHL head coach, as well as his first win as the Rangers' Head Coach.

Oct. 13, Rangers 1 vs. Oilers 2 - Mika Zibanejad tallied a goal to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 12:49 of the first period, but Edmonton tied the game less than two minutes later. The Oilers recorded a power play goal, which was the eventual game-winning goal, at 6:23 of the third period. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25 of 27 shots he faced in the contest.

Oct. 16, Rangers 3 vs. Avalanche 2 (SO) - Chris Kreider tallied a power play goal in the first period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. After Colorado tied the game, Kevin Hayes registered a goal at 10:53 of the second period to help the Rangers regain a one-goal lead. The Avalanche tied the contest in the final minute of the second period, and neither team recorded a goal in the third period and the five-minute overtime period. Kevin Shattenkirk tallied the game-deciding goal in the shootout. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced in regulation/overtime and two of three shooters in the shootout to earn the win.

Oct. 17, Rangers 3 at Capitals 4 (OT) - Mika Zibanejad opened the scoring at 6:09 of the first period. The Capitals tallied two goals to take a 2-1 lead, but Jimmy Vesey tied the game with a power play goal in the second period. After Washington regained a one-goal lead, Chris Kreider recorded a power play goal at 10:25 of the third period to tie the game again. The Capitals won the game at 2:18 of overtime.

Oct. 21, Rangers 1 vs. Flames 4 - Calgary opened the scoring with 3:00 remaining in the first period. The Flames extended their lead to two at 12:21 of the second period and took a 3-0 lead at 14:55 of the middle frame. Mika Zibanejad tallied a power play goal for the Rangers in the third period, and Calgary registered the final goal of the game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

Oct. 23, Rangers 5 vs. Panthers 2 - Florida opened the scoring with a power play goal at 18:15 of the first period. The Rangers tallied three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead, and all three goals were scored on special teams (two power play goals and one shorthanded goal). New York extended its lead to three at 1:27 of the third period and recorded an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation. Mika Zibanejad recorded four points (two goals, two assists), while Mats Zuccarello tallied two goals and Alexandar Georgiev made 36 saves to earn the win.

Oct. 25, Rangers 1 at Blackhawks 4 - Chicago opened the scoring at 2:55 of the first period, but Pavel Buchnevich tied the game 74 seconds after the Blackhawks scored. Chicago regained a one-goal lead in the second period and tallied two goals in the third period. Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves in the contest.

Oct. 28, Rangers 3 at Kings 4 - Vladislav Namestnikov registered a goal at 11:11 of the first period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead, and Tony DeAngelo tallied a goal at 7:42 of the second period to extend the Blueshirts' lead to two. The Kings recorded two power play goals in the second period to tie the game and took the lead with 9:32 remaining in the third period. Ryan Spooner tied the game with a goal at 15:16 of the third period, but Los Angeles recorded the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation.

Chris Kreider tallied two goals in the third period to put the Rangers up 2-1 and 3-2, respectively, but the Sharks tied the game both times after Kreider scored. After neither team recorded a goal in overtime, Kevin Shattenkirk tallied a goal in the shootout and Henrik Lundqvist stopped all three shooters he faced to help the Rangers earn the win.

NOVEMBER

Nov. 1, Rangers 3 at Ducks 2 (SO) - After neither team tallied a goal in the first period, Kevin Hayes opened the scoring with a power play goal at 1:42 of the second period. The Ducks tied the game, but Brett Howden recorded a goal to help the Rangers regain a one-goal lead at 14:29 of the second period. Anaheim tied the game in the final minute of regulation, and after neither team scored in overtime, Mats Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad recorded goals in the shootout to help the Rangers earn the win. Alexandar Georgiev made 28 saves in regulation/overtime and stopped both shooters he faced in the shootout.

Each team recorded three goals in the second period, as the Rangers took a 3-1 lead before Columbus registered three unanswered goals, and Jimmy Vesey tied the game at 4 in the final minute of the second period. After neither team registered a goal in the third period or overtime, Vesey recorded the game-deciding goal in the fifth round of the shootout.

After the Canadiens took a 4-0 lead in the second period, Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Strome each recorded a goal to cut the Rangers' deficit in half. After Ryan Strome tallied a goal to cut the Rangers' deficit in half, the Bruins registered three unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead. Zibanejad notched his second goal of the game with four seconds remaining in the contest.
