Rangers Notebook: Rangers acquire Holland from Montreal; Zibanejad has concussion

New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has acquired forward Peter Holland from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Adam Cracknell.

Holland, 26, has skated in 20 games with the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season, registering eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points, along with 19 penalty minutes. He was tied for second on Laval in assists, ranked third on the team in goals, and was tied for third on the team in points this season. Holland posted five multi-point games in 20 contests with Laval in 2017-18, including a four-point game (three goals, one assist) on Nov. 4 vs. Syracuse. The 6-2, 205-pounder has skated in 243 career NHL games over parts of six seasons (2011-12 - 2016-17) with Anaheim, Toronto, and Arizona, registering 35 goals and 46 assists for 81 points, along with 105 penalty minutes. Holland established career-highs in assists (18) and points (27) with Toronto during the 2015-16 season, and he tallied a career-high, 11 goals with the Maple Leafs in 2014-15. The Toronto, Ontario, native was originally selected by Anaheim in the first round, 15th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Cracknell skated in four games with the Rangers this season after he was claimed off waivers from Dallas on Oct. 9, 2017.

Zibanejad has concussion: The Rangers announced today that forward Mika Zibanejad did not skate today and has a concussion.

Zibanejad was a late scratch for Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Florida Panthers with what the team said was an upper body injury.

RANGERS VS PANTHERS POST GAME WRAP UP 11/28

COMEBACK FALLS SHORT RANGERS LOSE TO PANTHERS 5-4

The Rangers had a loss before the game even started, number one center Mika Zibanejad was a late scratch just minutes before the game with what the the team called an upper body injury. Zibanejad had practiced with the team earlier in the day and skated in warmups before the game. No word on how the injury happened or when he will return to the lineup.

A horrific First Period for the Rangers which saw Henrik Lundqvist chased from the net after 3 goals given up on 6 shots on goal in favor of Backup Ondrej Pavelec.

The Rangers were able to mount a comeback in the second period with goals off the sticks of J.T. Miller, Pavel Buchnevich and Chris Kreider. A waived goal scored by Kevin Hayes on a very questionable call by the official should have tied the game 4-4 but the call on the ice was incidental contact on goalie James Reimer by Rick Nash. Replays showed that Reimer had left the crease and was able to reset before Hayes skated in and slid one past him. The Rangers challenged the call but video review was upheld by the offices in Toronto.

With 6:32 remaining in the third period Chris Kreider scored his 2nd goal of the game to tie it up 4-4. But Florida took advantage of a giveaway by Nick Holden in the Rangers zone to retake the lead 5-4 with just 1:09 remaining in regulation. The Rangers pulled Pavelec for the extra attacker but failed to gain hardly any possession in the final minute of play.

David Desharnais who filled in for Mika Zibanejad tallied 2 assists in the game along with linemate Pavel Buchnevich. Linemate Chris Kreider tallied 2 goals, a 8 point night for the line.

The Rangers Win streak ended at 4 games and also ended their 8 game home ice win streak.

RANGERS VS PANTHERS GAME DAY PREVIEW 11/28

RANGERS GO FOR 9th STRAIGHT HOME WIN

New York Rangers (13-9-2) vs Florida Panthers (9-12-2)
TONIGHT 7:00 PM, TV: MSG, FSFL RADIO: WEPN 98.7
Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

The Rangers close out November against the Florida Panthers tonight. It is the second of three meetings this season and the only contest played at the Garden. The Rangers won the previous meeting in Florida on November 4th in a 5-4 overtime win. Kevin Shattenkirk tallied 2 goals in the Rangers win including the overtime winner.

The Rangers must look to not feed off their comeback win on Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks but once again look to put together a full 60 minutes of hockey. For all of the first period and all but 3 minutes of the second the Rangers were outplayed by the visitors, a sad trait that has plagued the team for most of the season.

Henrik Lundqvist who picked up the win in Sunday’s contest is expected to start his 15th straight game. Over the span Lundqvist has posted a record of 12-3 dating back to October 21st. On the season Lundqvist is 12-6-2 with a GAA of 2.63 and has a .013 SV %.

The Rangers did not hold practice on Monday so there is no update on the status of Captain Ryan McDonagh (strained abdomen) who has missed the previous 3 games nor is there an update on Boo Nieves (hip pointer).

Expect the Rangers lineup to remain the same s Sunday against Vancouver.

Florida is coming off a 3-2 Win over New Jersey last night in Newark which saw them out shoot the Devils 31-10 in the first two periods of the contest.

Tonight the Rangers hold their Hockey Fights Cancer Night. All Jerseys worn during pregame warmups will be auctioned off along with sticks and other items. Proceeds go to the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer Program. #HockeyFightsCancer

RANGERS VS CANUCKS POST GAME WRAP UP 11/26

RANGERS MOUNT COMEBACK WIN IT IN SHOOTOUT 4-3

A rough 37 plus minutes of opening play for the Rangers. Looking as though they hadn’t heard the alarm clock sound for the afternoon matinee at the Garden turned into a 4-3 shootout win for the Blueshirts.

Down 2-0 with 2:40 left on the second period clock Jesper Fast redirected a shot by Brendan Smith to cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of the visiting Canucks.

A quick start to the third gave the Rangers the tie 2-2 when Michael Grabner sped into the Vancover end and put one past Jacob Markstrom just 19 seconds into the period. Unfortunately Vancouver responded with their third goal of the game to retake the lead 3-2 less than a minute later.

The Canucks lead held until with just over 5 minutes to play in regulation Kevin Hayes forced a turnover and headed out of the Rangers zone sending a pass to Rick Nash who fed Jimmy Vesey for the tying goal 3-3 and sending the game to overtime.

A fruitless 3 on 3 overtime for both teams sent the game to the shootout. Both the Rangers and Canucks were 0 for 1 on the season heading in. It took until the 7th round to decide the outcome when Jimmy Vesey once again put one past Markstrom for the win.

Henrik Lundqvist who had trouble early on in the game with bad bounces picked up the win stopping 29 of 32 shots on goal.

Home Sweet Home has been the norm lately as the Rangers have won seven straight on Madison Square Garden Ice. Today they take on the Vancouver Canucks in an afternoon contest looking to pick up their 4th straight win and their 8th straight win at home.

This is the first of two meetings this season between the two teams and the only game at the Garden.

The Rangers come into the game after a 2-1 overtime win against the Detroit Red Wings. Henrik Lundqvist was spectacular in the contest stopping 40 of 41 shots on goal. The red hot Lundqvist will be starting his 12th straight game in net going 9-3 over the span.

The Canucks are one game into a four game road trip, having played the New Jersey Devils last night in a 3-2 loss on Friday night. Unlike the Rangers, Vancouver started the season on a hot streak going 6-3-1 in their first 1o games but has faltered in their last 12 going 5-6-1. Rookie Brock Boeser leads the Canucks in goals (11), assists (11) and points (22).

Captain Ryan McDonagh will miss his 3rd straight game with an abdominal strain. The Rangers will also be without center Boo Nieves who suffered a hip pointer in the first period against the Red Wings on Friday. David Desharnais will return to the lineup in Nieves place.
