NYR TODAY WEDNESDAY 10/31: Alumni Birthdays, Today in Rangers History

NYR Alumni Birthdays 10/31:

Harry Bell D (1946-1947) Paul Cyr LW (1987-1990) Steve Eminger D (2010-2013) Phil Goyette C (1963-69,1971-72) Bucko MacDonald D (1943-1945)

Today in NYR History 10/31:

1967 - Rod Gilbert recorded his 100th career NHL goal as the Rangers defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 6-1, in the first all-time meeting between the two teams.
Each member of the G-A-G Line registered a goal in the contest.

1970: The Rangers acquire Pete Stemkowski from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Larry Brown.

1987: New York Rangers forward Marcel Dionne scores the 700th goal of his NHL career, joining Gordie Howe (801) and Phil Esposito (717) as the only players to reach that mark at the time.
The goal comes in an 8-2 loss to the New York Islanders. Though neither spends the bulk of his career with the Rangers, Esposito and Dionne each score goal No. 700 with New York.

1990 - The Rangers won their eighth consecutive home game to begin the 1990-91 season, defeating the Los Angeles Kings, 9-4, at MSG.
The eight consecutive home wins to begin a season are the most the Blueshirts have registered in franchise history. Brian Leetch, John Ogrodnick, and Darren Turcotte all tallied three points in the contest, and Mike Richter made 38 saves to earn the win.

1993 - Mike Gartner and Sergei Nemchinov both tallied three points (two goals, one assist apiece) as the Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils, 4-1, in a neutral site game in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Mike Keenan also earned his 350th career win as an NHL head coach.

1995 - Brian Leetch recorded two assists/points, including his 500th career NHL point, as the Rangers defeated the San Jose Sharks, 5-3.
Leetch became the ninth player - and second defenseman - in franchise history (at the time) to record at least 500 points as a member of the Blueshirts.

RANGERS VS SHARKS POST GAME WRAP UP 10/30

RANGERS DROP LEAD TWICE BUT HOLD ON FOR SHOOTOUT WIN

A game of chase in the first period as the Rangers who pretty much out played the home Sharks. After a Brett Burns blast from the point was screened in front and past Henrik Ludqvist, Mats Zuccarello off a feed from Kevin Shattenkirk skated in put a top shelf wrister past Martin Jones to even the score 1-1.

A scoreless second period a pair of goals by Chris Kreider in the third period put the Rangers into the lead twice. San Jose came back on a 2 on 1 rush goal by Tiemo Meier after Brady Skjei skated in and tried a coast to coast run to put the Rangers up by two. The Rangers rush backfired and the Sharks took advantage, Vinny Lettieri back in after being a healthy scratch missed his assignment on the play which caught the ire of coach David Quinn who immediately verbally punished the young winger but set him out on the next shift.

Kreider once again put the Rangers in the lead which almost held for the final 10 minutes of regulation. While with their goaltender pulled and the extra skater in San Jose went to work. A misplay by Jesper fast in the neutral zone when instead of using the room he had to skate up and shoot for the empty net instead sacrificed his chance with a backhand pass looking for Jimmy Vesey but instead was picked off by the Sharks. The Sharks would put enough pressure on the Rangers for 3 straight icing calls, the third would be the deciding factor as Tomas Hertl took the puck deep behind the Rangers net and skated out front to tie the game at the buzzer, sending both teams to the 3 on 3 overtime period.

Neither team could tally in the overtime period despite both having a power play chance late in the 5 minute period. The game would head to the shootout.

Tomas Hertl, Mats Zuccarello, Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski all missed their shootout chances. Kevin Shattenkirk would put the game away on the Rangers final attempt with the game winner.

Two scary moments for the Rangers on Halloween Eve as first Henrik Lundqvist was backed into by teammate Cody McLeod and did not get up for a few moments. Lundqvist clearly in pain was flexing his neck and left shoulder repeatedly and even made a trip to the Rangers bench during the TV timeout. Lundqvist would stay in the game and was tested early and continued trough the pain to pick up the win.

The second close call came late in the third period with San Jose swarming in the Rangers zone, forward Vlad Namestnikov went down for a block and appeared to catch the shot behind his left shoulder. Namestnikov would head to the bench in pain and would wait until the next play stoppage to head to the locker room, skating cross ice with his left arm clearly dangling to his side did not look good. He would return later and seemed to be okay.

The shootout win was Lundqvist's 60th of his career. He leads all NHL goaltenders in the catagory.

The Rangers now 1-2-0 on their west coast road trip head to Anaheim to take on the Ducks Thursday at 10 PM.

RANGERS VS SAN JOSE SHARKS GAME DAY PREVIEW 10/30

Rangers Face Sharks Looking to Salvage Road Trip

New York Rangers (3-7-1) vs San Jose Sharks (6-3-2)
SAP Center at San Jose, San Jose, CA.
TONIGHT 10:30 PM, TV: MSG, NSCA RADIO: ESPN-NY 98.7 FM

The Rangers and Sharks meet for the second and last time of the regular season tonight in San Jose. The Rangers won the previous contest at MSG 3-2 in Overtime. Brett Howden and Bredan Smith tallied regulation time goals and Brady Skjei scored the game winner just 37 seconds into the overtime period. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 43 out of 45 shots, allowing 2 goals.

The Rangers are 6-3-1 in their last ten meetings with San Jose. The Rangers recorded a win in their last game at the SAP Center, 6-5 on Jan. 25, 2018.

Coming into tonight's game the Rangers dropped to 0-2-0 on a four-game road trip after falling 4-3 to the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. New York (3-7-1), gave away a two-goal lead in the second period, tied it in the third period before allowing Alec Martinez's goal with 55 seconds to play.

Since beating the Sharks earlier this month, the Rangers are 2-4-1 and have given up four goals four times. Henrik Lundqvist is 0-3-1 with a 3.74 goals-against average after defeating the Colorado Avalanche on Oct. 16.

The Sharks kick off an extended stretch at home tonight. Over the last five games, the Sharks have picked up nine of a possible 10 points to move atop the Pacific Division.

RANGERS VS KINGS POST GAME WRAP UP 10/28

LAST MINUTE GOAL LIFTS KINGS PAST RANGERS

The young season of road woes continues for the Rangers as they fall to a record of 3-7-1, four of those losses and one overtime loss coming on the road.

New York held a 2-0 lead halfway through the second period on goals from  Vladislav Namestnikov in the first, after a lengthy review when Namestnikov was shoved from behind into the Kings goaltender Jack Campbell as the puck crossed the line and the net was dislodged. Originally the referee called a no goal until a video review was asked for by the Rangers. A few minutes later the result came back in favor of New York for a good goal. But, Los Angeles used their coach's challenge to review the play once again for possibly goaltender interference, which then came back inconclusive and the goal finally stood for the 1-0 Rangers lead.

Tony DeAngelo who made his way back into the lineup with both Adam McQuaid and Freddie Claesson out with injuries tallied the Rangers and the games 2nd goal in the middle period before the halfway point to extend the lead 2-0. But the penalty bug bit the Rangers with back to back infractions from Cody McLeod and another too many men on the ice bench minor. Los Angeles took advantage with two power play goals, 1 from a returning Dustin Brown and the 2nd from Ilya Kovalchuk to even the game 2-2.

Trevor Lewis put the Kings up 3-2 with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation for their 3rd unanswered goal of the game. The Rangers were able to battle back when Ryan Spooner tied the game just under 5 minutes later. The game remained deadlocked until Alec Martinez beat Henrik Lundqvist on a partial screen with Rangers defenseman Brendan Smith in front with 54 seconds remaining to give the Kings the win and end their six game loss streak.

Henrik Lundqvist losing streak when playing in Los Angeles continues as he takes the loss last night stopping 36 of 40 shots on goal. Lundqvist hasn't won a game at the Staples Center since 2013 when the Rangers defeated the Kings 3-1 on October 7.

It's hard to take any good from a loss but there were a few upsides for the Rangers. Ryan Spooner tallied his first of the season along with Vladislav Namestnikov and Tony DeAngelo netting their firsts. Namestnikov and DeAngelo also picked up assists for two point nights.

The Rangers head to San Jose for a match up with the Sharks on Tuesday then to Anaheim to face the Ducks on Thursday before returning home on November 4th to face the Sabres at MSG.

RANGERS VS KINGS GAME DAY PREVIEW 10/28

RANGERS LOOK TO TURN THINGS AROUND IN SUNDAY MATINNE IN LOS ANGELES

New York Rangers (3-6-1) vs Los Angeles Kings (2-7-1)
Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA
TODAY 3:30 PM TV: MSG, FSW

The Rangers come into this afternoon's game looking to something, anything to bring them together as a team after coach David Quinn said they played their worst game of the season on Thursday night in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. New York played what was definetly their worst period of the young season having been outshot 37-19 and producing just one shot on goal in the third period including a shot off the crossbar by Kevin Hayes.

The Rangers will start the game with news lines and defense pairings if you go by yesterday's practice. Tony DeAngelo will be reinserted into the Rangers defense as both Freddie Claesson (upper body) and Adam McQuiad (lower body) have fallen to injury in the past two games.

Henrik Lundqvist is likely to get the start today although he has struggled in recent years at the Staples Center since the 2014 Stanlet Cup Finals. He has lost both appearances at Staples Center since those Finals as well, giving up seven goals on 66 shots (.894 save percentage).

The Kings (2-7-1) have lost six in a row and haven't led at any point during that streak. Los Angeles will try to avoid their longest losing streak in nearly 11 years when they begin a seven-game homestand today after a  4-1 loss at the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

RANGERS VS BLACKHAWKS POST GAME WRAP UP 10/25

Rangers Offense a No Show in 4-1 Loss to Chicago

Not much to take out of this game on the upside for Rangers fans except for the Rangers possibly dodged a bullet late in the second period when rookie defenseman Neal Pionk went down after taking a deflected puck to the face, Pionk who has been one of the Rangers best players at both ends of the ice immediately dropped grabbing his face but was able to get up under his own power to make it to the Rngers bench. Immediately Pionk sat while trainer Jim Ramsay checked the rookie out. The Rangers now who had already lost defenseman Adam McQuaid in the first period to a lower body injury had another teammate in question going into the third period. It didn't take long for Rangers fans to relax as Pionk was out for the first shift in the third period.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 32 of 36 shots on net giving up 3 goals and an empty net goal late in the third while pulled for the extra skater sealed the Rangers loss. Pavel Buchnevich was the only Ranger to get a tally tonight for his third goal of the season off a beautiful play started in the Chicago zone by Brett Howden.

From the beginning the Blackhawks had a plan and that was to shut down the Rangers top line of Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Mats Zuccarello and except for a few occasions did a pretty good job handling the trio that tallied a combined 7 points in the Rangers previous game against Florida.

The third period summed up the frustration for New York as they were held to only one shot on goal for the 20 minutes.

TONIGHT 8:30 PM (Est.-US) , TV: MSG, NSCH RADIO: ESPN-NY 98.7 FM

The Rangers start a four game west coast road trip starting tonight in Chicago a finishing up after three games in California on November 1st.

The Rangers come into tonight's game off a 5-2 win over Florida on Tuesday which saw the "awakening" of both Mka Zibanejad and Mats Zuccarello. The first line along with Chris Kreider picked up a combination of 7 points in the contest with Zibanejad and Zuccarello both picking up a pair of goals each, Zibanejad added 2 assists in the game.

The Rangers are 0-2-1 in road games this season but hope that they can build off the win Tuesday which saw them net four goals in just 19 shots as they  continued to play well at home and where they have won three of their past five games.

The 5-2-2 Blackhawks come into tonight's contest having won 3 of their last five games including a 3-1 home win against Anaheim on Tuesday. Brandon Saad scored a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory and Corey Crawford made his third start of the season finishing the game with 24 saves. Chicago isn't without their own struggles having a forgettable 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday in which Chicago allowed 55 shots on goal, including a record-setting 33 in the second period alone.

Tonight is the first of two meetings between the Rangers and Blackhawks this seaon. Last season the Rangers lost the two game series to Chicago dropping both games, in Chicago 6-3 and 5-2 at MSG.
