RANGERS VS CAPITALS GAME DAY WRAP UP 10/17

Rangers Fall in Overtime to Caps 4-3

Despite goals from Mika Zibanejad, Jimmy Vesey and Chris Kreider the Rangers couldn't overcome heading into overtime for the third time in their last four games. Already having picked up and OT win against San Jose and a shootout win just less than 24 hours prior to last night's contest it seemed as though time wasn't on their side.

Already showing signs of having to battle through the game in the first period, the Rangers were down in shots on goal early to Washington 9-1 when Zibanejad scored the game's opening goal on their second shot on net. After two unanswered goals from Alexander Ovechkin and Jon Carlson in the first and second periods, the Rangers were in the chase once again. Jimmy Vesey tied the game in the second to take the Rangers to intermission tied 2-2. Ovechkin would strike again early in the third while on the power play from a late second period interference penalty to Brendan Smith carried over from to second. The Caps would hold the lead until just past the midway point of the third with Nic Dowd in the box for interference, Chris Kreider picked up a timely deflection in front on the man advantage to tie the game. The tie held up to take the two teams into overtime. Matt Niskanen would however spoil the Blueshirts comeback with the game winner just halfway through the 3 on 3 period.

Neal Pionk picked up assists on the three Rangers goals giving him a 3 point night. Henrik Lundqvist starting his second game of the back to back stopped 34 of 38 shots on net.

The Rangers power play was 50% on the night scoring on 2 of their 4 chances while the penalty kill came up the same stopping 2 of 4 Capitals advantages.

Tonight was the third straight game, the Rangers opened the scoring.

The Rangers return home for their next two games, hosting Calgary on Sunday and Florida on Tuesday, before setting off on a four-game trip out West.
