RNYRF THROWBACK THURSDAY:
MALONEY AND LAROUCHE LEADS WALES TO VICTORY
NY Times 2/1/1984
By KEVIN DUPONT
Published: February 1, 1984
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Jan. 31— Don Maloney didn't do everything right here tonight, although he did leave the Bryne Meadowlands Arena with a winning goal, a $14,000 car and a look on his face that set an all-star record for modesty.

Maloney, the Ranger left wing, actually stumbled slightly after his goal and three assists led the Wales Conference to a 7-6 victory over the Campbell Conference in the National Hockey League All-Star Game. Lined up with his teammates for the presentation of the most valuable player award, the 25-year-old Maloney slipped and fell to his knees as his name was announced to the sellout crowd of 18,939.  ''All of a sudden, for no reason, I slipped,'' said Maloney, selected to the Wales team for the second year in a row by its coach, Al Arbour. ''I couldn't believe it. I felt so stupid. I thought, 'What am I doing here?' ''

Line Scored Nine Points

Maloney and the rest of his line - Ranger teammate Pierre Larouche and Hartford's Mark Johnson - led the Wales Conference victory with a total of nine points. Maloney, with his goal and three assists, tied an all-star record, held by four others, for most points in one game. Larouche, who came to New York as a free agent last fall, scored two goals. And Johnson, a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team, also had three assists, as did Toronto's Rick Vaive, to tie another record.

Regardless of what records were tied or broken, Maloney's postgame performance stole the show. The crowd, long before his name was announced as the most valuable player, was chanting, ''Donnie, Donnie, Donnie.''

He lifted himself up from the ice after his fall, put his hands over his eyes in disbelief and, one-by-one, shook the hands of his teammates. 'Like Winning the Lottery'

''This is a dream come true, like winning the lottery,'' said Maloney, whose goal at 7 minutes 24 seconds of the final period gave the Wales squad a 7-3 lead and eventually became the game-winner. ''You buy a lottery ticket - but you never expect - I don't know what to say.''

Maloney, after shaking his teammates' hands, skated over to his prize, a red Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 that had been rolled out onto the ice. After again burying his face in his hands, Maloney knocked the hood with his hand, kissed the bumper, and raised a clenched fist toward the crowd, the second largest in all-star history.

Again, the crowd responded in a roar, ''Let's Go, Rangers, Let's Go, Rangers.'' It could have been the middle of Madison Square Garden.

''It's great here in New Jersey,'' said Maloney, whose last four goals with the Rangers have all been game- winners. ''There are so many Ranger fans. The clapping, the cheering, it gives you a morale lift. This is the year of the Rangers, I hope.'' Opened 5-0 Lead in First Period

It was certainly the night of goal- scoring. The Wales Conference, on goals from New Jersey's Joe Cirella, the Islanders' Denis Potvin, Boston's Rick Middleton, Montreal's Mats Naslund and Larouche, jumped to a 5-0 first-period lead.

Two of the night's most memorable plays - both defenseive - came after Larouche had capped the 5-goal spree at 17:14 of the opening period. The first came when Wayne Gretzky, was stopped by the Boston goalie Pete Peeters on a breakaway with less than two minutes to play in the period. Then, with only 43 seconds gone in the second period, the Boston goalie again held his ground and stopped another Gretzky breakaway. The Oiler star was playing with a sore shoulder that he had injured on Jan. 21. After the game, Gretzky said that the shoulder had not yet been X-rayed and that he hoped it was not separated.

The Campbell squad had cut the lead to 5-3 by 6:42 of the middle period on scores by Chicago's Denis Savard, Vancouver's Darcy Rota and Detroit's John Ogrodnick. But Larouche, set up by Johnson and Maloney, gave the Wales team a 3-goal edge by the end of the second period.

Maloney's goal, on a pretty feed from Johnson, a fine-passing center, made it 7-3 in the third. Then Winnipeg's Dave Babych, Gretzky and Minnesota's Brian Bellows each scored against the New Jersey goalie Glenn Resch to make the final score 7-6 and break, by a goal, the record for most goals in a game.

''I don't think I've ever won anything to tell you the truth,'' said Maloney, who plays for a team that hasn't won a Stanley Cup since 1940. ''I was never good at fairs or anything. I've been a klutz all the way around. I guess this proves miracles can happen.''

RANGERS DEFEAT SABRES 6-3

Rangers Hit Break With 6-3 Win Over The Sabres

COURTEST BLUESHIRTS UNITED

Coming off a 3-0 loss in Ottawa the day before, the Rangers rebounded to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 Monday night at Madison Square Garden in their final game before the All Star break. The Rangers hit the break having won three of their final four games.
The victory did not come easily, however. They let a 3-1 third-period lead dissipate into a 3-3 tie before goals from J.T. Miller and Mats Zuccarello restored order and sent the Rangers back on track to their 18th home-ice victory of the season (18-5-2).
Derick Brassard led New York with five points on the night, scoring twice and assisting on three others. Jesper Fast added a pair of assists, and Henrik Lundqvist made 23 saves between the pipes.
Exactly one minute after Buffalo had stunned the Rangers by tying the score at 5:44 of the third period, Fast's deflected pass through the slot found Miller on left wing and he swept his 13th goal into a gaping cage, putting New York back in the lead at 6:44.
The Rangers then scored a power play goal to restore their two-goal advantage at 9:23 as Zuccarello finished off a gorgeous passing sequence with Derek Stepan and Brassard. It was Zuccarello's team-high 18th goal, and only's New York's second power play goal in their last 35 opportunities. The goal marked the first that Buffalo had surrendered after 22 successful kills--including three prior on Monday night.
Brassard finished of fhis big night by scoring into the empty net with 35.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Rangers had snapped a 1-1 tie late in the second period on an opportunistic goal from Viktor Stalberg, his first in eight games. Kevin Hayes had the puck slide off his stick between the circles, but Stalberg, driving to the net while shadowed by Sabres defenseman Mark Pysyk, spun around to bat the loose disc between the pads of goaltender Chad Johnson before falling to the ice. Stalberg's seventh of the season gave New York its second lead of the night, and it came on a rousing shift in which Miller, Dylan McIlrath and Stalberg himself all delivered crunching hits in the offensive zone.
It was McIlrath who had provided the Rangers their first lead of the night, scoring his second goal of the season just 5:58 into the game. McIlrath, in the lineup Monday in the place of scratched veteran Dan Boyle, fired a shot from the left circle which deflected off of Buffalo's Rasmus Ristolainen and past Johnson, as Miller did a good job of causing havoc in front of the net.
The early goal was a just reward for a Rangers team that came out with a strong burst Monday following a sub-par effort 24 hours earlier in Ottawa. Chris Kreider rang a wicked left-wing shot off the post on the game's first shift just 21 seconds into play, and Oscar Lindberg was robbed on a diving stick save by Johnson--the former Rangers goaltender--at 1:29. Johnson also made an excellent stop to deny Zuccarello four  minutes later, and shortly before McIlrath's goal.
Though the Blueshirts controlled most of the play during the first period, Buffalo did manage to tie the score before the intermission arrived. Buffalo captain Brian Gionta skated hard to the net and his deft deflection of a Marcus Foligno centering pass somehow worked its way past Lundqvist, tying the game, 1-1, at the 16:13 mark of the opening period.
Kreider once again had a near miss to start the second period, somehow chipping a pretty Zuccarello feed wide of the net from point-blank range 25 seconds into the middle stanza. Three minutes later Johnson made a strong pad stop on a Zuccarello rebound putback. After that there were few scoring chances for either side until Stalberg scored with 5:09 to play in the period.
Brassard provided New York some breathing room, scoring his 16th goal of the season just 66 seconds into the third period. Fast made quick, slick cross-crease pass to Brassard who was skating hard to the net on right wing, with the puck deflecting off his skate and past Johnson.
However Buffalo's Zemgus Girgensons scored twice in a span of one minute thirteen seconds--both assisted by highly-touted rookie Jack Eichel--and the Sabres had pulled even by the 5:44 mark of the third period.
That's when the Rangers went back to work and scored a pair of quick ones themselves to restore their two goal lead and secure an important victory and two points in the standings heading into the All Star break.

The Skinny:
The Rangers (26-17-5, 57 pts) play their final game before the All Star break Monday night at Madison Square Garden when they host the Buffalo Sabres (19-25-4, 42 pts). Their six-day mid-season “vacation” certainly will be more enjoyable should they win Monday’s game. A victory and they head into the break with three wins in their last four games and a 4-2-0 record in six, but a defeat would give them a pair of losses following two feel-good victories last week over the Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes. The reason for this is how the team played in Sunday afternoon’s 3-0 shutout loss to the Senators up in Ottawa, one which clearly irked head coach Alain Vigneault and surprised the players. The Rangers started very slowly and did not seem to have the same jump they displayed in their previous two contests. The Blueshirts were shut out for the fourth time this season, and went 0-for-3 on the power play, extending their recent struggles to 1-for-31 dating to December 28. The bigger issue and surprise was the team’s play five-on-five where they were unable to execute their game plan nor dictate how the game was played, something they had been much better at as of late. Of course the Rangers have played much better on home ice than on the road, both recently and all season long. New York is an impressive 17-5-2 at MSG this season and 4-0-1 in their last five at home. Rick Nash, who sat out Sunday’s game with an unspecified injury, is questionable to play on Monday. The team did get Chris Kreider back on Sunday after a one-game absence due to neck spasms. Kreider played nearly 18 minutes, was credited with four hits and two shots on goal, while attempting six shots. Tanner Glass played only 9:51 against the Senators, but led all players with six hits; while Dan Girardi recorded six of the team’s 27 blocked shots. Vigneault did not state whether Henrik Lundqvist (30 saves Sunday) or Antti Raanta would start in goal against the Sabres. Though they sit in last place in the Atlantic Division and own the second-fewest points in the NHL, the Sabres are no longer the easy pushovers they were a year ago. Under new head coach Dan Bylsma, the Sabres are an up and coming team that features two of the league’s top rookies—Jack Eichel and San Reinhart—All Star Ryan O’Reilly who was acquired from Colorado and leads the Sabres with 40 points, and the return of goaltender Robin Lehner—acquired from Ottawa—who has missed most of the season due to injury, but returned Friday night to make 42 saves in a 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Injuries have hurt this team—most notably the one to Lehner, who has appeared in only three games this season—and on Monday key veteran forwards Tyler Ennis and Cody McCormick will be unavailable to play along with Zemgus Girgensons. Also, a six-game losing streak which bridged December and January has marred an otherwise respectable year for the Sabres.
Head To Head:
This is the first meeting between the Rangers and Sabres this season. They will also play March 8 up in Buffalo and April 2 at The Garden. The Rangers enter play with a seven-game winning streak against the Sabres, including all three a year ago when the Blueshirts swept the season series from Buffalo. The 2014-15 season series is remembered most for the milestones achieved by the Rangers then-20 year-old goaltender Mackenzie Skapski who made his only two NHL appearances last season against the Sabres, winning them both. He earned his first victory in his NHL debut on February 20 up in Buffalo, a 3-1 Rangers win, despite allowing a goal just 14 seconds into the contest. He settled down and finished with 24 saves as Rick Nash scored the game-winning goal, Mats Zuccarello added some third-period insurance and Derick Brassard picked up a pair of assists. Then on March 14 Skapski earned his first NHL shutout in his second start, a 2-0 win on March 14 also up in Buffalo. Skapski made 20 saves in this one, and Keith Yandle scored his first goal as a Ranger, the game-winner. In the only game not started by Skapski against the Sabres last year, the Rangers routed Buffalo 6-1 on January 3 at MSG. Six different Blueshirts recorded a goal that night, and 13 Rangers earned at least one point, and Henrik Lundqvist made 24 saves.
Players To Watch:
Rangers-Mats Zuccarello: He still leads the Rangers in goals with 17 and points with 34, but Mats Zuccarello’s production has slowed in the month of January. Zuccarello has just one goal and two assists in the ten games played this month, making one wonder if he will a prime beneficiary of the time off during the All Star break. He did record a team-high-tying six shots on goal Sunday in Ottawa, his most in any game this season—but the finish and Grade A chances were not there. If Rick Nash is to be sidelined for any length of time—and the Rangers have not indicated he might be—the club will need Zuccarello’s offensive production even more. Zuccarello led the team in scoring two years ago, was a complimentary scorer a year ago, and then came flying out of the gates this season. Now the Rangers need him desperately to find that form once again.
Sabres-Jack Eichel: The second overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft behind Connor McDavid, 19 year-old Jack Eichel skates against the Rangers for the first time in his pro career Monday night. He comes into his Garden debut playing extremely well, with 16 points in his last 16 games, and as one of the top rookie performers in the league this season. Eichel, who has recorded a pair of two-goal games already and had a four-point outing against Boston the day after Christmas, is third among all rookies with 14 goals and ranks fourth in scoring with 30 points in 48 games. Eleven of his points have come on the power play, where he ranks second among all league rookies while his five power play goals are tops among all first-year players. On the Sabres he ranks second in goals and power play goals, third in points, and first in shots on goal. The former Boston University star won the 2015 Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top performer, and last year he played for the United States at both the World Junior Championships and the World Championships. He is a treat to watch on the ice and an NHL star in the making, though his coach Dan Bylsma has emphasized that Eichel and his -13 plus/minus mark still has a long way to go to become a complete all-around player at this level.

RANGERS BLANKED IN OTTAWA

POST GAME RECAP:
Rangers Beaten 3-0 By Senators In Sunday Matinee
Jim Cerny
Lacking the speed, energy, and all-around solid play they had displayed in recent games, the Rangers were beaten 3-0 by the Ottawa Senators Sunday afternoon at the Canadian Tire Centre. The loss prevented the Rangers from securing their first three-game winning streak since they won nine in a row from October 25-November 15.

The Rangers, who had defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in overtime at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday and followed with a solid 4-1 road win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, played without Rick Nash, who was hurt in the third period of Friday's contest. His spot in the lineup was taken by Chris Kreider, who had missed the previous contest due to neck spasms.

Head coach Alain Vigneault said that he was hopeful Nash would be available to play Monday when the Blueshirts host the Buffalo Sabres in their final game before the All Star break.

Craig Anderson stopped all 35 shots he faced Sunday for his third shutout of the season. Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves for the Rangers.

The Rangers and Senators nearly reached the second intermission scoreless, but Ottawa found a way to break through with 19.9 seconds remaining in the middle stanza to put New York in a 1-0 hole.

After turning the puck over at the Senators blue line, the Rangers seemed to avert disaster when Ottawa sloppily failed to generate a shot on goal during the ensuing odd-man rush back into the Rangers zone. However the Senators stayed with the play, winning a key puck battle behind the goal, and after defenseman Jared Cowen hit the post with a screened slap shot, Bobby Ryan beat Kevin Klein to the rebound and found the back of the net for his 17th goal of the season.

In a way the goal was symbolic of the Rangers play Sunday afternoon to that point, seemingly a step behind in all three zones even though Ottawa was far from on top of its game.

Lundqvist had bailed the Rangers out in the game's opening minutes with several clutch saves, many after giveaways by New York in its own end of the ice. Just 1:12 into the game Lundqvist denied Matt Puempel one-on-one after the rookie was sent in alone after a Mark Stone takeaway. Later in the first period Lundqvist robbed Stone who was alone at the right post looking to convert at the end of a neat tic-tac-toe passing sequence during a Senators power play.

The Rangers seemed to turn the game's momentum late in the opening period after their first power play of the afternoon, and started the second period strong. However after their initial surge, which included Kevin Hayes fanning from a couple feet out on a slick Jesper Fast pass with Anderson well out of his crease, the Rangers played with less jump in their game, and they and the Senators settled into a defensive battle until Ryan's goal late in the second.

The intermission did not slow Ottawa's momentum. They came out strong in the third period, and Mike Hoffman doubled the Senators lead just 2:40 in when his uncontested right-wing snap shot beat Lundqvist glove side off an odd-man rush.

Ottawa put the game away with 2:22 to play when Jean-Gabriel Pageau scaled the puck from his own zone into the empty Rangers net after Lundqvist was pulled for an extra attacker and New York on the power play.

Derek Stepan played in his 400th NHL game Sunday. Centering a line with Kreider and J.T. Miller on the wings, he recorded one shot on goal while logging 19 minutes of ice time.

The Skinny:
Having won consecutive games for the first time since November 21-23, the Rangers (26-16-5, 57 pts) try to make it three in a row Sunday afternoon in Ottawa when they face off with the Senators (22-20-6, 48 pts). The Rangers backed up their dominating 3-2 overtime win at The Garden Tuesday against the Canucks with a solid 4-1 road victory over the Hurricanes on Friday, a pair of games where New York used its team speed and solid fore checking ability to its distinct advantage, while defending better in its own end and receiving quality goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist, who says that he feels his game has been rounding back into shape the past few weeks. In addition, after being burned badly on the penalty kill much of December and January, the Rangers have been shorthanded only twice combined in the previous two games. With the team cutting back on its time shorthanded, and having played really well 5-on-5 for the better part of the past month, it can be seen why the Blueshirts are beginning to once again be rewarded more consistently with points in the standings. The strong play of J.T. Miller--four goals in his last four games, two on Friday night, and a career-high 12 on the season--has been a major boost as has been the work of bottom-six forwards like Kevin Hayes and Viktor Stalberg, both of whom were praised extensively by head coach Alain Vigneault following Friday's victory. Daniel Paille played a solid 15 minutes in his Rangers debut on Friday; and now Vigneault will have to figure out who to remove from the lineup if, as expected, Chris Kreider is able to return from neck spasms for Sunday's matinee. There has been no update on Rick Nash, who took a nasty fall and crash into the boards early in the third period Friday only to return and take a slap shot off the knee while killing a penalty later on. Ottawa comes in following Friday's 5-2 home-ice loss to the Islanders in which the Senators let a 2-1 second-period lead evaporate into their second consecutive loss, prompting angry talk from forward Bobby Ryan and head coach Dave Cameron after the game. Thursday night the Senators surrendered five first-period goals in a 6-3 road loss to the Devils, and then on Friday they allowed three in the third to the Islanders. Overall the Senators--who remain three points out of a playoff spot in the East--have lost four of six and eight of their last 12, and their -18 goal differential is second-worst in the Atlantic Division and fourth-worst in the Eastern Conference. The Senators are one of the most penalized teams in the NHL, which is very bad considering they own the league' second-worst penalty kill. Should the Rangers use their speed and fore check as well as they have recently, they could be rewarded with a string of power play opportunities against this Ottawa team.

Head To Head:
The Rangers and Senators close out their three-game season series Sunday afternoon with New York looking to finish off a sweep of Ottawa in 2015-16. Back on November 14 the Rangers edged the Senators 2-1 in a shootout up in Ottawa. Hometown boy Dan Boyle netted the game-deciding goal in the shootout, while Chris Kreider scored New York's only goal early in the first period of this tight contest. Both teams scored once on the power play and were shut out at even strength, while Craig Anderson made 33 saves for the Sens and Henrik Lundqvist countered with 22 for the Rangers. Then on December 6 at Madison Square Garden the Rangers went 2-for-2 on the power play en-route to a 4-1 victory over the Senators. Derick Brassard scored twice for New York, including once on the power play, and Ryan McDonagh had a goal and two assists. Jesper Fast also scored into an empty net for the Rangers, who have won four of their last five overall meetings against Ottawa. Lundqvist stopped 23 of 24 shots in that December match up, while Anderson finished with 27 saves.

Players To Watch:
Rangers-Ryan McDonagh: The last time these two teams met back in December Ryan McDonagh was a beast, on ice for all four New York goals and finishing with a career-high-tying three points (1-2-3). If that memory isn't bad enough for the Senators, they will now have to face McDonagh playing his best and most consistent two-way hockey of the season when the teams hook up on Sunday. After a slow start to the season, and some up and down play in the Rangers' rough month of December, McDonagh has played markedly better at both ends of the rink in the month of January, and it's no surprise that the team has followed suit and is playing much better, as well. Offensively McDonagh has become much more involved of late, and he enters play with a season-best four-game point-scoring streak (1-3-4). He also has seven points in his last seven games (1-6-7). Friday night in Carolina, McDonagh read things perfectly by intercepting a John-Michael Liles pass at center ice and then flying past the flat-footed Hurricanes before rifling a wicked shot under the cross bar for his sixth goal of the season. It was a terrific individual effort by the Rangers captain, who next week will make his first NHL All Star Game appearance, and it came at the perfect time--opening the scoring and setting the tone in what ultimately would be a 4-1 victory.

Senators-Mika Zibanejad: Coming off his first 20-goal season a year ago, much was expected of 22 year-old Mika Zibanejad this season in Ottawa. However, like the team itself, Zibanejad's season has been largely disappointing so far. The former first round pick (sixth overall in 2011) has scored just ten goals this season and has 29 points--though his 19 assists are fourth-most on the team. After his 20 goal, 46 point campaign last season, though, better numbers were expected from this highly-skilled youngster in 2015-16. Perhaps he is turning a corner now, though. Zibanejad enters play on a four-game point-scoring streak (2-3-5) after picking up an assist against the Islanders on Friday night, and three of his ten goals this season have come in the past seven games. In fact half of his goals this season--five--have been scored since December 27, a span of just 13 games. That's a spark of optimism since he only scored five goals in his first 34 contests this year. Zibanejad admits to getting extra juiced when facing fellow Swede Henrik Lundqvist, so there are many reasons to keep an eye on him Sunday afternoon.
