NYR VS STARS POST GAME NOTES

Ulf Samuelsson told the Rangers to challenge that the Dallas goal was offsides
10:23PM: Alain Vigneault said after the game,"Ulf was there, we had a couple of D on the bench that thought it was offside. Jerry in the video room, took him 10 seconds to double check and rewind and guys were confident that it was offside."

9:24PM: Following the decision to overturn Dallas' third goal because Jason Spezza was offside, John Giannone said that Ulf Samuelsson deserved the credit for the decision to challenge it.
Giannone said that in the third period Samuelsson stands at the far end of the Rangers bench, basically in-line with the blue line, and as soon as the goal was scored he was "screaming" down at Scott Arniel and Alain Vigneault to check out if the play was offside.

9:49PM: From the NHL explanation of the challenge:
At 13:06 of the third period in the Stars/Rangers game, New York requested a Coach's Challenge to review whether Dallas was off-side prior to Valeri Nichushkin's goal.

After reviewing all available replays and consulting with NHL Hockey Operations staff, the Linesman determined that Stars forward Jason Spezza was off-side prior to the goal. According to Rule 78.7, "The standard for overturning the call in the event of a 'GOAL' call on the ice is that the Linesman, after reviewing any and all available replays and consulting with the Toronto Video Room, determines that one or more Players on the attacking team preceded the puck into the attacking zone prior to the goal being scored and that, as a result, the play should have been stopped for an "Off-side" infraction; where this standard is met, the goal will be disallowed."

Adam's Thoughts:
  • Well this was the best the Rangers have played at both ends of the ice in a long time. They made Dallas pay when they made mistakes and severely limited the impact of Benn and Seguin at the other end of the rink.
  • Derek Stepan had two goals and looked a lot more like Derek Stepan than he has recently.
  • Rick Nash was probably the Rangers best skater tonight. He was all over the place, in his 900th game, at both ends of the ice and finished with three assists. He protected the puck, brought it to the net and overall, he played like he has to.
  • Jayson Megna did not look out of place playing with Stepan and Nash and will certainly have a place in the lineup if he plays this way. It is just one game, but he complemented Stepan and Nash really well. If he stays in and Chris Kreider comes back, I think short-term Viktor Stalberg would come out but long-term I think it would probably be Tanner Glass.
  • That quick response by Keith Yandle was key to this game. The Rangers had squandered some PP chances and a few Dallas turnovers and should have been up more than 1-0 but Yandle's goal to put the Rangers back on top after Dallas tied it had to be a huge confidence boost for the Rangers.
  • Now it's on the Rangers to follow this game up with another strong one, and then another strong one and another and so on and so on. They need to start taking steps forward and not just a step forward and then a step back. Washington will be another good test and the Rangers should definitely be motivated to play after Washington came back and embarrassed them at MSG in their last meeting.

After the game, Stepan spoke on MSG and said:
  • On starting to feel better, "I think our whole line played extremely well. You can't overlook Rick Nash's play and Jayson's play. It's why we had success and worked hard and created chances."
  • On the first goal, "There are a couple of battles won, all three of us won a battle before it went in the back of the net, that is something that going forward our whole group needs to do. Our line did good things tonight."
  • On the shorthanded goal, "Our killers kind of needed it lifted off because I know that we scored some shorthanded goals last year. It's important to be able to kill penalties but also to get some offensive looks and score goals."
  • What was different or better, "we took advantage of some mistakes that they made. We did a lot of good things and going forward our defense the last few games has been much, much better."
  • On this win being good for the group, "it's good for our group but it doesn't mean anything come tomorrow, we need to make sure that we are ready to play a good team on Saturday."
