Alain Vigneault spoke with the media following the Rangers loss to the Capitals (MSG):
  • "real hard fought game. Both teams competing real hard. They made us pay for a couple of mistakes early on but we stuck to the plan, battled back in the third. Unfortunately with a few seconds left we weren't able to get it done but we battled hard and had a chance to win, two chances to win in OT and couldn't do it and they had their chance and they did."
  • Did you consider a timeout, "no, not really. They had their guys who had been out there, they had used their timeout, Dom was out there and he was fresh. Our guys knew how we wanted to play 6 on 5. I had the people I wanted out there. Mac might have been a little bit tired there, we got the puck out, if he was really tired he would have come to the bench and he decided to stay on the ice so he couldn't have been that tired. Fortunately we left a good player in front of the net all alone there and they got a little rebound that they were able to tap in."
  • "For me this is more about taking a step forward as a team. We battled back from a two goal deficit against one of the better teams. We were real close to getting it done but I think we took a good step in the right direction."
  • "That first one there, he was just thinking of that little pop play that we like to do. Shorthanded sometimes it's a tougher player to execute, a great player read it and put it in our net. Give them credit for that. Anything else, thanks guys."

The Rangers took another step in the right direction yesterday
Alain Vigneault said after yesterday's game that the Rangers "took a good step in the right direction" with how they battled back against "one of the better teams." (MSG)
Derek Stepan said on MSG, "we did a lot of good things tonight. We played a really good game. You look at their goals, they had a PP goal and a breakaway goal and didn't see much more until they had a 6 on 5.
Henrik Lundqvist aid that the Rangers had a "great third period" and "came really close to beating a really good team."
Lundqvist mentioned multiple times that it was frustrating to lose the game with how they battled back, adding "we played a good game. We didn't give up that much. In the third. It just sucks, the way we battled back, that last one." (MSG)
Mats Zuccarello said that he felt the Rangers were the better team for most of the game but the Rangers gave them some easy goals. (VG)
Derick Brassard said that the Rangers are a proud group and can't sit after a game like yesterday and "be happy because you made progress." (NY Post)
Stepan said that if the Rangers play like they did yesterday on a consistent basis "we will win a lot of games" but added that just because they played well doesn't making losing OK. Stepan said that once the Rangers can clean up some areas they are capable of playing "top-end hockey." (NY Post)
Adam Rotter: It's a step but it only matters if they follow it up with wins and then more wins and then a few more wins after that. The Rangers have been going through the process the past few weeks where they have been better but alternating wins and losses leaves them standing in the same spot. They need a winning streak to really establish forward progress and until that happens the Rangers can keep saying they are taking steps but until they rack up points those steps will just be words.
