How Brady Skjei played in his NHL debut, what he said and what his teammates said
In his NHL debut, Brady Skjei played 14:54, was a minus one, had one shot on goal, 1 giveaway, 3 takeaways and 2 blocked shots.
In the second period Skjei flubbed a pass that was picked up by the Oilers and led to Jordan Eberle's tying goal.
By period, Skjei played 5:08 in the first, 6:07 in the second and 3:39 in the third with 2:15 coming on the PK.
At 5 on 5 when Skjei was on the ice, the Rangers had 8 shot attempts for and 19 against. (Natural Stat Trick)
Skjei played 9:59 with Dan Boyle at even strength and overall played 11:47 with Boyle, 2:07 with Dylan McIlrath, 38 seconds with Marc Staal and 22 seconds with Ryan McDonagh. (Natural Stat Trick)
Joe Micheletti said that Skjei didn't look nervous and that he was "aggressive and made a lot of great plays."
Dave Maloney said that Skjei is "such a fluid skater" and has a high level of "hockey intelligence."
Alain Vigneault said that Skjei did a "good job" in his first game. He said that he assumes that Skjei will make more mistakes in his NHL career but that he will also make a lot of good plays. (MSG)
Henrik Lundqvist said that Skjei played really well and a "mature and smart" game. He said that he was upset that he couldn't bail out Skjei after his turnover but "overall he was pretty strong." (MSG)
Marc Staal said that Skjei was "solid" and played with a lot of poise when he had the puck. He said that it was a "first step in many, many games for him." (MSG)
After the game on MSG, Skjei said:
On his first game, "it was awesome. To get the win was the best part for sure. I thought that I played a strong game, made a little mistake in the second, but battled back and getting the team win was awesome."
On bouncing back after his turnover, "it happens in hockey, you need to put it behind you, it's a bad bounce. Forget about it as fast as you can, I thought that I did that well."
On the experience, "It was all that I could ask for. Playing against these top guys is pretty cool."
"I wanted to play my game, not do too much or too little, make the pass when it was there. Thought I played a strong game."
On the difference in speed, "it's a little faster here but guys are positioned well and usually a guy open every time you have the puck. That way it's a little easier but those top guys are to look out for."
Did anyone give you advice, "A lot of the guys in the locker room came up and told me to have fun with it. They have all been there, I had some nerves, probably more excited than nervous but I just tried to relax and play my game."

The much-needed win the Rangers picked up last night
Henrik Lundqvist said that last night's win was "so needed, for so many reasons." (MSG)

Lundqvist said that he liked how the Rangers battled last night and hopes that they can build on the win. (MSG)

Marc Staal said after the game, "I thought we were more comfortable tonight, we played like we were more comfortable." (MSG)

Ryan McDonagh said that the Rangers limited the chances for the Oilers and defended the front of the net better.

(Rangers Game Notes)

He said that the forwards collapsed and followed the game plan that was set out, "we did a pretty good job of that tonight." (Rangers Game Notes)

Lundqvist said that the Rangers did a good job of staying focused, especially in the third period. He said that the Rangers didn't talk about just winning the game, but instead how they needed to play on the ice and what they needed to do to win the game.

What Alain Vigneault said after the game
Alain Vigneault met with the media following the Rangers win over Edmonton (MSG):

"Any team in today's NHL need young players to step in and be able to contribute and not just play a few minutes but important minutes at important time. I assume you are talking about Dylan and Brady right now and I thought that for Brady's first game, considering the stage, he did a good job. He had that turnover in the second period and I am assuming it won't be his last mistake in this league and I am also assuming he will make a lot of good plays. Dylan played a real strong game with the puck and without the puck."
On the Skjei turnover, "Any player that expects to play in this league and become a regular is going to go through that, a play like that can't affect you. You need a short memory, move on and think about the next play coming up."
"We try and play a similar game to Hartford to a certain extent. They are doing a good job of developing young players who can help us and Ulfie tonight had a long talk with Brady prior to the game and I am sure that helped them."
"I wouldn't say offensive confidence. I don't picture him being and offensive defenseman, but a two-way defenseman who plays a physical brand of hockey and that is what I have seen. He has a great shot from the point, he used it, had a great screen from Tanner and hopefully we see more of it."
On the PK, "Practice? We had a lot of penalties so we got better at it. That was a great pass that they found that seam where he was all alone. In the third, gotta give credit to the penalty killers. They blocked a lot of shots and blocked a lot of lanes and did a real good job."
"In the last game in Calgary, I put that line together and it had some good moments and decided to stick with it."
"Timely goals and timely saves were a very big part of our early season success and there is no doubt that instead of going into the dressing room after two with a tie, that PP goal gave us some momentum going into the third and we were able to kill off a lot of penalties and get it done."
