Rangers Lose Lundqvist, Fall to Pens 5-2 in Game One

With :47 left in the first period defender Marc Staal's stick slipped between the cage of Henrik Lundqvist's mask and was struck in the eye. Lundqvist finished the period but allowed a goal when Pittsburgh rushed the net and Patric Hornqvist scored with 17 seconds remaining in the period. Lundqvist did not return for the second period and was replaced by backup Antti Raanta. Coach Alain Vigneault was asked what the status of Lundqvist was and only gave an answer of day to day.
Despite out shooting the Penguins 37 to 31 the Rangers just couldn't get enough goals past 3rd string backup Jeff Zatkoff filling in for the injured Marc Andre Fleury. The Rangers only 2 goals were both scored by Derek Stepan. His first coming on a 5 on 3 power play advantage for the Rangers in the 3rd Period and an even strength goal towards the midway point of the period. The Penguins goals came from Patric Hornqvist who picked up a hat trick on the night one coming on the power play, Sidney Crosby on a breakaway vs Raanta late in the second period and a short handed goal by Tom Kuhnhackl.
The score doesn't reflect the Rangers Game One effort. The Rangers played a strong game but just couldn't overcome the effort in net by Zatkoff for the Pens.
