Ovechkin scores 45th goal, Caps topple Rangers 4-2

NEW YORK (AP) -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals used a fast start to end a perfect road trip.

Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 45th goal and the Capitals extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night.

T.J. Oshie, Matt Niskanen and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for Washington, which went 3-0 at Detroit, Montreal and Madison Square Garden.

Nicklas Backstrom, who had four assists in a win over Montreal on Saturday, added two more to give him 44 this season. Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves.

"Tonight we got really loose in the second two periods there, they really took it to us," Oshie said. "Without Grub, we might be in overtime right now."

Washington increased its lead to five points over two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

"We've still got to keep going and keep getting points every night," Oshie said.

Lias Andersson scored in his NHL debut and Mats Zuccarello added a goal for the Rangers.

Andersson, at 19 years, 164 days, became the youngest player in team history to score in his NHL debut. He broke the mark set by Mike Allison (19 years, 195 days) on Oct. 9, 1980, at Boston.

"It feels good, obviously," Andersson said. "It's always fun to score and especially in your first NHL game, so it was fun."

The Capitals scored four goals in the first period and cruised from there.

"I think we jumped in right away," Ovechkin said. "I think we had pretty good chances in the first couple of shifts. Osh scored, Nisky's goal is pretty sick. How he scored, it was pretty impressive."

Oshie gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead 2:50 into the game with his 18th of the season. Backstrom skated the puck into the zone and had three Rangers near him when he passed to an open Oshie at the right faceoff circle and he beat Alexandar Georgiev with a wrister.

Niskanen made it 2-0 just 2:23 later. Kuznetsov skated with the puck at the blue line and sent a backhand pass to Niskanen, who had plenty of time to score his seventh of the season at 5:13

Ovechkin scored on a one-timer on the power play from his favorite spot in the left faceoff circle at 8:54. Georgiev was pulled after allowing three goals on six shots.

Ondrej Pavelec replaced him and made 26 saves. It was Pavelec's first appearance since Feb. 9 against Calgary.

Kuznetsov finished off the dominant first period with a short-handed goal at 16:39.

"We talked about this road trip," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "We've had really terrible starts. We put a lot of emphasis on the first period, obviously. We were able to get their goaltender out and obviously built a lead."

Andersson and Filip Chytil gave the Rangers a glimpse of the franchise's future. Andersson and Chytil, both 2017 first-round draft picks and centers, were promoted from the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Hartford on Sunday.

Chytil centered a line with Kevin Hayes and Zuccarello. Andersson centered a line with Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Spooner and got the Rangers on the board. Andersson cut it to 4-1 late in the second period when Vesey worked the puck behind the net and sent a pass to Andersson, who wristed it past Grubauer at 13:16.

"It was a great feeling to see him score his first goal," Chytil said of Andersson. "It was something special. We will talk about it tonight. It's great that he scored his first goal in his first game."

Chytil assisted on Zuccarello's 16th goal at 4:26 of the third for his first NHL point.

"Both kids had a good game," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "It was an emotional day and an emotional game for them, but I thought they played well."

NOTES: Devante Smith-Pelly, Shane Gersich and Christian Djoos were scratched by the Capitals. ... According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Andersson and Chytil became the first pair of teenagers to get a point in the same game with the Rangers since Dec. 18, 1974 (Ron Greschner and Dave Maloney). Chytil played two games earlier in the season with New York. ... Henrik Lundqvist, David Desharnais, Peter Holland, Paul Carey and Tony DeAngelo were the healthy scratches for the Rangers.

The Rangers and Capitals meet for the first of a home and home matchup tonight at Madison Square Garden and meeting for the fourth and final time in Washington on Wednesday.

New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced yesterday that the team has recalled forwards Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. The Rangers have not yet announced if Andersson or Chytil will be in the lineup for tonight’s game.

The Rangers come into tonight’s contest after a 5-1 win Saturday Night against the Buffalo Sabres. Jimmy Vesey scored two goals in the win, Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Neal Pionk each tallied a goal and an assist in the contest. Alexandar Georgiev picked up the win with a personal season high 43 saves against Buffalo including 21 shots in the first period.

This is the third of four meetings between the Rangers and Capitals. So far the season series is split 1-1 with both teams winning on home ice. The Capitals won the first contest in Washington 4-2 on December 6 and the Rangers the second at MSG 1-0 on December 27 in the shootout. Henrik Lundqvist suffered the loss in Washington but stopped 40 of 44 shots on goal. Ondrej Pavelec picked up the home shutout win stopping all 30 shots that he faced not including all 3 shooters he faced in the shootout. Jesper Fast has a goal in the series. Mats Zuccarello scored in the shootout to give the Rangers the win on December 27.

The Metro Division First Place Capitals enter tonight’s game after a 6-4 win in Montreal Saturday Night and having lost only one game in their last five. Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin leads the team with 44 goals and 81 points, Evgeny Kuznetsov leads in assists with 50.

Rangers Blanked by Capitals 2-0

In what looked to be a game to rest players for the playoffs turned out to be just that. Coming into the game the Rangers sat Rick Nash, Ryan McDonagh, Mats Zuccarello, Brady Skjei, Jesper Fast and Nick Holden giving them some much needed rest and healing time with a week away from the start of the NHL Playoffs.

After 35 minutes of scoreless hockey the Capitals took a 1-0 lead with a power play goal with seconds remaining on the man advantage by Alexander Ovechkin after a holding the stick call on Rangers D-man Brendan Smith. The Caps added a goal under six minutes into the third by Evgeny Kuznetsov o round out the scoring.

For the most part the Rangers played a solid game for the lineup they ran with. A few undisciplined penalties plagued them during the second leading to the Capitals winning goal, otherwise they held their own with a mixed up lineup.

Henrik Lundqvist looked sharp in his 5th straight start stopping 23 of 25 shots on goal.

Rangers return to action on Saturday Afternoon facing the Senators in Ottawa at 12:30 pm.

With the first round playoff match up already set between the Rangers and Montreal Canadiens the Rangers look to shake some rust off their dept chart and get some much needed rest for some of the regulars. Heading into tonight's match up with the Washington Capitals, Alain Vigneault has already announced that Ryan McDonagh, Mats Zuccarello, Rick Nash and Jesper Fast will all be out of the lineup tonight resting minor bumps and bruises. AV will go with the lines of Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Pavel Buchnevich, Brandon Pirri-Mika Zibanejad-Jimmy Vesey, Michael Grabner-Kevin Hayes-JT Miller, Tanner Glass-Oscar Lindberg-Matt Puempel. Tonight's defense pairs are still up in the air and will be a game time decision.

Henrik Lundqvist is scheduled to get his fifth straight start in a row since coming back from injury and will split the two remaining regular season games this weekend with Antti Raanta.

Lundqist is 2-1-0 in 3 games versus Washington this season with a 2.35 GAA and a .929 save percentage. He is 21-10-4 with four shutouts all-time against Washington, and 12-4-2 in his last 18 appearances against the Capitals dating back to Dec. 12, 2010.

Coming into the fourth and final game against the Caps the Rangers hold a 2-1 lead in the series, 1-0 in Washington and 1-1 at MSG.

The Rangers have 27 road wins, which is tops in the NHL and one behind their franchise record set back in 2014-15 and have won eight of their last 12 games away from The Garden.

Today in NYR History April 5:

1970: The New York Rangers pass the Montreal Canadiens for fourth place and the final Stanley Cup Playoff berth in the East Division on one of the wildest season-ending days in NHL history.

The Rangers enter their season finale against the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden needing not only a win and a Montreal loss to the Chicago Blackhawks that night, but also having to outscore the Canadiens by at least five goals (under the rules then in effect, the first tiebreaker for teams with identical records is goals scored).

Incredibly, the Rangers score nine goals before the midway point of the third period. Coach Emile Francis even pulls goaltender Ed Giacomin four times in the final minutes in an effort to get more; instead, New York gives up two shorthanded goals but finishes with a 9-5 win.

1990: NY Rangers beat NY Islanders 2-1 in 1st game of preliminary round of the 1990 playoffs.

2013: Henrik Lundqvist becomes the fourth Rangers goaltender to appear in 500 regular season games.

Rangers End February on the Downside, Fall to Caps 4-1

Coming into tonight's contest already without Dan Girardi, ankle and Kevin Klein, back spasms the Rangers would also have to scratch center Mika Zibanejad. Zibanejad who skated in warm ups was scratched due to an upper body injury.

The Ranger looked good through most of the first period scoring the first goal on a tic tac toe play with Brady Skjei putting one past Caps Goalie Braden Holtby for the lead. The Caps wer able to come back late in the period and send the game to intermission tied 1-1.

Coming out in the second period the Caps took the game to the Rangers blasting 18 shots on goal during the 20 minutes. The Rangers scored what was though to be the go ahead goal by Michael Grabner but aftrer a Caps coach's challenge and a lenghty review the goal was waived for an offsides. The Caps continued their momentum and took the lead 2-1.

The Capitals were able to add two more goals in the third period to take the win 4-1. The Rangers looked very disorganized for most of the game without key players and four mostly new lines.

The Rangers look to end the February schedule on the upswing as they take on Metropolitan Division Leading Washington Capitals tonight at MSG. The Rangers are playing their sixth game in the last nine days. The Rangers had won six straight before this current 3-2-1 stretch.

This is the third of four meetings between the Rangers and Caps with the Rangers leading the season series 2-0. The Rangers defeated Washington in the previous game 2-1 back on Februray 19th at MSG and took the first game in Washington 4-2 back on October 22nd.

Henrik Lundqvist should be getting the start tonight against Washington. In Lundqvist's last 17 appearances against the Capitals (dating back to Dec. 12, 2010), Lundqvist has posted an 12-3-2 record.

Questionable for the Rangers lineup tonight are rookie Pavel Buchnevich (Flu) and defenseman Kevin Klein (Back Spasms). Klein is to be re-evaluated today by Rangers trainers after missing the weekend games vs New Jersey and Columbus.

Rangers Down First Place Caps 2-1

The Rangers came out playing a strong first period tallying a goal on 20 shots on net. The Rangers goal was a beautiful top shelf shot by Captain Ryan McDonagh. The Rangers scored what seemed to be a power play goal by Mika Zibanejad but the goal was overturned after a Coach's Challenge by the Capitals. The play was deemed offsides as Ryan McDonagh had just lifted his foot off the blueline to take a stride before the puck entered the Caps Zone. Caps' Grubauer kept the Caps in the game with timely saves on Kevin Hayes and Chris Kreider.

In the second period the Caps picked up their play in the Rangers end and Henrik Lundqvist came up with some timely saves to keep the lead until on the second penalty kill of the period the Rangers gave up the tying goal when the Caps deflected one off Nick Holden and over Lundqvist.

Tied 1-1 in the third period the Rangers took the lead 2-1 when Mats Zuccarello tallied his 12th of the year on a feed from Chris Kreider after Mika Zibanejad won the faceoff in the Caps Zone.

The eventual game winner was Zuccarello's first career goal in 17 games against Washington.

The Rangers were able to hold off the Caps in the final minutes to take the 2-1 Win.

Henrik Lundqvist backstopped the Rangers with 31 saves on 32 shots on goal.

Rangers meet Division Leading Capitals

The Rangers get back to work today after a two day layoff from Thursday's disappointing 4-2 loss in Brooklyn to the Islanders to take on the Capitals in a Sunday Afternoon Home Game.

Today is the second meeting of four this season, the Rangers won the first contest 4-2 in Washington back on October 22nd.

Henrik Lundqvist will get the start for the Rangers. In 33 career games vs Washington Lundqvist holds a record of 20-9-4.

Rookie Pavel Bucnevich is likely to return to the lineup after being a healthy scratch in Thursday's game vs the Islanders. Buchevich returned to the 4th line in practice yesterday alongside Oscar Lindberg and Jesper Fast. The other 3 lines remained the same as previous games.

RNYRF Remembers Announcer Jim Gordon (February 19, 1927 – February 20, 2003)

The television "voice" of the NHL New York Rangers and radio voice of the NFL New York Giants.
Gordon began calling New York sporting events when he was hired by Madison Square Garden in 1955 to be the radio voice of the Rangers and Knicks. He worked in those capacities on-and-off in both radio and television over the next three decades, occasionally alternating with other New York sportscasters like Marty Glickman, Les Keiter, Bob Wolff, Win Elliot, Tim Ryan, Don Criqui and Marv Albert.

In between Knicks and Rangers assignments, Gordon appeared on CBS Sports network TV coverage of the NHL in the late-1960s and also was the original television voice of the New York Islanders, calling games in the 1972-73 season. Returning to the Rangers in the mid-1970s, he called their cable and broadcast TV games until 1984, when he was replaced by Sam Rosen.[4] During some of those hockey seasons, he also called games on the syndicated NHL Network.

In 1977, Gordon was hired to replace Marv Albert as the radio voice of the New York Giants football team. For 18 seasons (ending in 1994) Gordon called games on both WNEW and WOR alongside Dick Lynch and (later) Karl Nelson. He was fired by WOR after the 1994 season and replaced by Bob Papa, effectively ending his broadcasting career.

Gordon died from cancer on February 20, 2003, one day after turning 76.

1977: Rod Gilbert scores a goal with an assist to become the 11th player in NHL history and the first member of the Rangers to earn 1,000 points. He reaches the milestone in his 1,027th NHL game, a 5-2 loss to the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

Rangers Rally with 4 unanswered goals to beat the undefeated Capitals 4-2

Stating off it looked like it was going to be a long night for Rangers Fans as the Capitals took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. But the Rangers battled back and Henrik Lundqvist stood tall to take down the 3-0-1 Capitals.

The Rangers goals came off the sticks of Brandon Pirri, Jimmy Vesey who picked up a power play goal and then his second of the game just 3 minutes later on a nifty move putting one past Braydon Holtby and finally Rick Nash with an empty net "nail in the coffin" with just 6 seconds remaining.

The Rangers showed what they were made of battling back from a 2-0 deficit, skating hard and never giving up against a Washington squad that was very strong on the forecheck and in the own end of the ice. Great team Win for the Rangers and and even better one for Rangers Fans.

The Rangers were without defenseman Dan Girardi, who skated this morning but was unable to play. Forward Pavel Buchnevich remained out of the lineup with back spasms

The Rangers return to action tomorrow night against the Arizona Coyotes. The first of a five game home stand.
