Today in NYR History November 25:

1967: Gilles Villemure makes 35 saves and shuts out the St. Louis Blues, 1-0, in the Rangers first meeting with St. Louis. 

1970: The Rangers play for the first time in Buffalo and tie the Sabres 2-2.

1992: Adam Graves tied a single-period Rangers record by tallying three goals in the third period, and Mark Messier recorded six points (two goals, four assists) as the Rangers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 11-3.

1997: Three years after helping the New York Rangers to their first Stanley Cup since 1940, Mark Messier returns to Madison Square Garden for the first time after signing with the Vancouver Canucks during the offseason. Messier cries on the bench during a video tribute, but he scores a breakaway goal and is named the game's First Star in Vancouver's 4-2 victory.

2005: The Rangers and Washington Capitals participate in the longest shootout in NHL history (15 rounds). The Rangers’ Marek Malik tallies the winner with a between-the-legs shot in the 15th round.

LUNDQVIST STANDS TALL IN RANGERS 2-1 OVERTIME WIN

60 minutes and 37 seconds is all it took for the Rangers to gain a much earned 2 points in the standings. A 40 save performance by Henrik lundqvist backed by a Chris Kreider game tying goal and an Overtime game winner by Mats Zuccarello put the Rangers over the visiting Red Wings 2-1.

A back and forth goaltending clinic put on by both Henrik Lundqvist and Jimmy Howard where we saw 50 shots on goal and 50 saves combined heading into a scoreless third period.

Detroit opened  the scoring with Michael Grabner in the Box and with 2 seconds remaining on their power play when Detroit's Tatar put one past Lundqvist on a screen in the first 5 minutes of the period. The Rangers were able to come back and tie the game just over 6 minutes later when Chris Kreider finally put one past Jimmy Howard to tie the game 1-1. The teams played the rest of the period scoreless and headed for 2 on 3 overtime.

Just 32 seconds into the overtime period after Henrik Lundqvist lost his stick Brady Skjei carried the puck into the Red Wings Zone and did a spin-o-rama move by the goal line a slid the puck to an open Mats Zuccarello for the game winner.

Rangers unveil 2018 Winter Classic uniform

The New York Rangers unveiled their uniform for the 2018 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic against the Buffalo Sabres on Jan. 1 (1 p.m. ET; NBC, SN, TVA Sports, NHL.TV). Their Original Six heritage, their 90-plus years of history in New York and the intrastate rivalry with the Sabres served as key influences in the design.

The jersey features the Rangers' color scheme of red, white and blue, though navy blue replaces their traditional royal blue as a nod to the roots of the game outdoors. The stairstep font is inspired by the diagonal "RANGERS" lettering worn in the late 1920s. The red "NY" is a tribute to the intrastate rivalry with the Sabres.

The uniform's nameplate and numbers are white and designed to align graphically to the crest. The sleeve and waist striping is inspired by New York's uniforms of the early 1930s, with the higher placement of the sleeve stripes and the solid white collar a staple of that era.

The pants remain red, but the detailing along the sides and around the leg opening is a simplified version of their current pant piping, reflecting the simpler design aesthetic of the jersey and socks.

The Sabres and Rangers will each play in the Winter Classic for the second time. Buffalo lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the inaugural event at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Jan. 1, 2008. The Rangers defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park on Jan. 2, 2012.

This will be the first of three meetings between the two teams this season and first of two at the Garden.

The Red Wings come into tonight’s contest having played 3 games in the last 4 days and having lost on Wednesday to the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 in Detroit. 1977: Rod Gilbert plays in his final NHL game, a 6-3 victory for the New York Rangers against the Colorado Rockies at Madison Square Garden. He retires as the Rangers leader in goals (406) and points (1,021), and is elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.

2014: New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist shuts out Montreal 5-0 at Madison Square Garden, four days after his backup, Cam Talbot, defeats the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0. It's the first time the Rangers get back-to-back shutouts from different goaltenders since Wayne Thomas wins 4-0 at the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 30, 1977, and John Davidson wins 4-0 at the Minnesota North Stars three days later.
