RANGERS VS PANTHERS POST GAME WRAP UP 10/23

Zibanejad & Zucarello Propel Rangers Past Panthers 5-2

2 goals each from Mika Zibanejad and Mats Zuccarello helped push the Rangers past the strangling Florida Panthers 5-2 tonight at Madison Square Garden.

Finding themselves trailing behind after a late Florida goal in the first period by Vincent Trocheck the Rangers picked up their game in the second period starting off with a short hand goal from Zibanejad to tie the game just over 3 minutes into the middle period.  Zibbanejad and then Zuccarello traded power play tallies to put the Rangers up 3-1 to head into the third period with the lead.

Zuccarello then extended the Rangers lead off a Panthers zone faceoff win whipping a nice wrist shot past goaltender Michael Hutchinson to bring the score to 4-1. Hutcinson was chased from the Florida net after the goal in favor of James Reimer. Florida was able to cut the lead in half with a goal from Mike Hoffman just past the midway point.

Kevin Hayes added an empty net goal while Florida had Reimer pulled for the extra skater to put the game away for good 5-2 and give the Rangers their first regulation win of the season.

Rookie defnseman Neal Pionk extended his points streak adding another two primary assists, both coming on the power play. The line of Chris Kreider, Zibanejad and Zuccarello combined for a 7 point showing.

Alexandar Georgiev who returned to the Rangers lineup after a brief demotion to Hartford "to get some work in" was solid in net surrendering both Florida goals but stopping 36 shots on goal.

The Rangers special teams were the workhorses tonight picking up 2 goals on 6 power play attempts and stopping 3 of 4 Florida man advantages and adding the short hand goal by Zibanejad.

Rangers End Home Stand Looking for the Elusive Win vs Struggling Panthers

Both teams come into tonight's contest having lost their previous recent games. The Rangers dropped a 4-1 decision to the visiting Calgary Flames on Sunday night. The host Panthers fell to the Detroit Red Wings, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday night.

The Rangers, thwarted by Calgary backup David Rittich on Sunday with a 44 save performance with only Mika Zibanejad finding the back of the net while on the power play are still looking to solve their spotty goal scoring. The Rangers are getting chances but just can't seem to finish to turn those chances into goals and therefore points in the standings.

The Rangers (2-5-1), who have one regulation/overtime win, but the Panthers (1-2-3), have yet to win outside of the shootout.

Alexandar Georgiev, returning from a stint in Hartford this weekend will get the start tonight for the Blueshirts.

Michael Hutchinson, who has been splitting time in net for the Panthers with James Reimer while starter Roberto Luongo recovers from a knee injury, will start for Florida.

At Rangers practice on Monday, the lines being used were:

Following practice the Rangers announced that defenseman Freddie Claesson will miss the next 2-3 weeks due to an upper body injury.

This is the first of 3 games this season that The Rangers and Panthers will face off.  Last season the Panthers took the season series 3-0, winning on November 4 in Florida 5-4, again on Novenber 28 another 5-4 decision at MSG and a 4-3 Win in Florida on MArch 10.

Today in NYR History 10/23:

1933: The Rangers trade Gord Pettinger to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for cash considerations.

1955 - Bill Gadsby registered three assists and Wally Hergesheimer tallied two goals, including the game-winning goal, as the Rangers rallied to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-4, at MSG.

1957 - Gump Worsley stopped all 26 shots he faced to earn a shutout and Dean Prentice tallied two goals as the Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-0, at MSG.

1966 - Ed Giacomin stopped all 24 shots he faced to earn his first career NHL shutout, and Wayne Hillman registered the only goal of the game at 7:14 of the third period as the Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 1-0, at MSG.

1968: Brad Park made his NHL debut as the Rangers defeated the Oakland Seals, 6-1, at MSG. Seven Rangers tallied two points in the game (including each member of the G-A-G Line), and Ed Giacomin stopped 33 of 34 shots he faced to earn the win.

1986: The Rangers acquire rights to Miloslav Horava (playing in Czechoslovakia) and future considerations (Stu Kulak) from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Clark Donatelli, Ville Kentala, Jim Wiemer and rights to sign Reijo Ruotsalainen. This completes earlier trade on October 2nd involving Don Jackson and Mike Golden.

1966: Rod Gilbert tallies the first hat trick of his NHL career in a 4-4 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

1967: The Rangers play the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time, and win, 6-4, at MSG. Vic Hadfield tallied three points (one goal, two assists).

Strong Rangers effort spoiled by Flames Backup

The loss didn't come from a lack of effort from the Rangers who pelted the Calgary net with 45 shots on goal in 60 minutes, but could only come up with 1 goal scored.

That was the bottom line tonight for the NY Rangers as Flames backup goalie David Rittich, in for starter Mike Smith held off the Rangers with a 44 save effort.

Johnny Gaudreau and Garnet Hathaway each tallied two goals each for the visiting Calgary Flames to give them their first win at Madison Square Garden since December 7, 2008 (a 3-0 Win).

Mika Zibanejad tallied the only Rangers goal on the power play in the 3rd period, a top shelf shot over Rittich's Glove side with the help off a screen in front by Chris Kreider.

Henrik Lundqvist who came up on the short end tonight allowed 4 goals on 26 shots.

Both teams come in to tonight's contest having lost their previous games, the Rangers fell to the host Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime on Wednesday. The Flames dropped a 5-3 decision to the visiting Nashville Predators on Friday.

Henrik Lundqvist and Mike Smith will get the starts. Lundqvist is 8-3-0 in 11 career games against the Flames. Smith is 5-12-2 in 20 career appearances against the Rangers.

Rangers defenseman Freddie Claesson is likely to miss Sunday's game after suffering an upper-body injury during practice Saturday.

This is the first of two meetings this season between New York and Calgary. The Rangers won the season series last year 2-0. The first win came with 4-3 home ice win , power play goals from Kevin Hayes & Mika Zibanejad. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 30 of 32 shots to garner the victory.
