NY RANGERS VS COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS POST GAME RECAP

Rangers Edge Blue Jackets 2-1 in Eric Staal's Debut

Eric Staal was held without a point in his Rangers debut Monday night, but he did help his new team pick up another important two points in the standings as the Blueshirts held off the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 at Madison Square Garden.
Derek Stepan snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring a shorthanded goal at 17:12 of the third period. It was his second shortie of the season, and 14th goal overall.
Staal made his Rangers debut 24 hours after being acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes. He spent the first two periods centering a line with Kevin Hayes and Oscar Lindberg on the wings before shifting to the left side of Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello in the third. He also saw time centering one of the Rangers power play units.
With Staal's addition to the lineup, along with the absence of Jesper Fast from the lineup due to an illness, head coach Alain Vigneault had to shuffle his line combinations quite a bit on Monday. Viktor Stalberg, for instance, started with Stepan and Chris Kreider, and then slid back to his usual spot with Hayes and Lindberg.
Rookie defenseman Dylan McIlrath was pressed into service as forward for the first time in his professional career. He played right wing on the team's fourth line with Dominic Moore and Tanner Glass, drawing the most attention when he fought Columbus forward Jared Boll at 10:35 of the second period.
Whatever the reason it was a largely disjointed game for the Rangers, though goaltender Antti Raanta did a solid job between the pipes while starting in the place of the resting Henrik Lundqvist.
Zuccarello did give New York a 1-0 lead late in the first period, a lead they held until early in the third. Zuccarello's 21st goal of the season came after he sped behind the Columbus net, came out on right wing, and proceeded to bank a shot off rookie goaltender Joonas Korpisalo.
Columbus was able to pull even at 3:46 of the third period when Cam Atkinson netted his 20th, burying the rebound after Raanta had stopped his initial shot on a clean breakaway.
However with only 2:48 remaining in regulation Stepan's shorthanded goal, on a breakaway, proved to be the game winner.

Where: Madison Square Garden
When: Monday night at 7:00 PM
Watch: MSG Network beginning at 6:30 PM
Listen: ESPN-98.7 FM and NewYorkRangers.com
************************************
The Skinny:
The NHL’s trade deadline will have passed by time the Rangers (36-20-6, 78 pts) host the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets (26-29-8, 60 pts) Monday night at Madison Square Garden. How the lineups of these two Metropolitan Division foes will be affected will not be fully known until Monday afternoon, but the Rangers will most definitely have one new face on the ice. Veteran forward Eric Staal will make his Rangers debut after being traded by the Carolina Hurricanes to New York Sunday afternoon. How he will be deployed by head coach Alain Vigneault is unknown, but likely it will be a top-six role with a spot on the power play for the 31 year-old who has scored 20 or more goals nine times during his impressive career. That would mean most likely Jesper Fast would slide down into a bottom six role, though that is just speculation since Vigneault has not spoken to the media since the trade. Staal is versatile and experienced, can play on the wing or at center, and is hungry for a crack at the Stanley Cup, something that has not been the case in quite some time with Carolina. He can expect a warm, and loud, welcome from the Blueshirts Faithful on Monday night. Staal joins a Rangers team that won back to back road games in St. Louis, 2-1 on Thursday, and Dallas, 3-2 on Saturday. Overall the Rangers have won four of their last five and are 9-2-1 in their last 12 contests. This will be their only stop at The Garden in a two-week span where they play five of six on the road. At home this season the Blueshirts are an impressive 22-6-3, the third best home mark in the entire NHL. The Rangers will be facing their former coach John Tortorella for the first time since he took over as head coach of Columbus in late October after the Blue Jackets stumbled out of the gate by losing their first seven games under former coach Todd Richards. It took awhile but Tortorella has the Blue Jackets playing much better hockey of late. Columbus is 9-2-4 in its last 15 games overall following Saturday’s 4-3 shootout win over the Florida Panthers and 5-1-2 in its last eight on the road. Former Ranger Brandon Dubinsky, who netted the shootout winner Saturday, has a four-game point-scoring streak as well as 14 points (5-9-14) in his last 16 games, while rookie Joonis Korpisalo has done a solid job filling in for injured goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, posting a .919 save percentage in 23 appearances this season.
Head To Head:
After playing in back to back games the first week of the season the Rangers and Blue Jackets have not faced one another since. The Rangers won both of those games, 4-2 in Columbus on October 9, and 5-2 in their 2015-16 home-opener the very next night at Madison Square Garden. New York rallied from a 2-1 third-period deficit to win on the road in Columbus with Mats Zuccarello scoring his first two goals of the season and Henrik Lundqvist making 23 saves. Then the next night at The Garden the Rangers raced out to a 5-0 lead with Oscar Lindberg scoring twice and Lundqvist finished with 37 saves. Lindberg has three goals in two games against the Blue Jackets this season, while Zuccarello (2-0-2), Derek Stepan (1-1-2), Derick Brassard (1-1-2), J.T. Miller (0-2-2), Viktor Stalberg (0-2-2) and Keith Yandle (0-2-2) all have recorded two points. The Rangers have also killed nine of ten Columbus power plays so far in the season series, which continues Monday at MSG and then concludes April 4 in Columbus. Last season the Rangers won three of four games against the Blues Jackets, including a pair at The Garden—one in the shootout and the other in overtime. In that 4-3 OT win on April 6 Stepan tied things up in the final minute of regulation and then won it in overtime with his second goal of the game.
Players To Watch:
Rangers-Eric Staal: After playing 909 games with the same team over his NHL career Eric Staal starts over with his new team Monday night, making his Rangers debut after being acquired from Carolina on Sunday. It will be curious to see how quickly the Hurricanes second all-time leading scorer adjusts to playing with a new team in a bigger market and under more pressure in New York. Considering he is 31 years-old, been captain of his team for seven seasons, won a Stanley Cup championship and an Olympic gold medal,  and has been rumored to be dealt out of Carolina for several months chances are that Staal will adapt quite fine to being a New York Ranger. And it certainly will not hurt that his younger brother, Marc, is there to be his Rangers teammate. Staal give head coach Alain Vigneault plenty of options in that he can play center or on the wing. Likely he will play wing with either Derek Stepan or Derick Brassard in a top-six role, but take some important face offs, as well. Staal will also likely be immediately put on the team’s inconsistent power play where he has scored 105 of his 322 career goals. He has struggled this season offensively—scoring just ten goals, only one of which came on the power play, and totaling 33 points—but the Rangers are banking on Staal being “energized”—in the words of general manager Jeff Gorton--by this trade to a serious Cup contender. It all begins for him on Monday night, this next chapter, though the final word on the success of this deal won’t come until later this spring when the playoffs are completed.
Blue Jackets-Brandon Saad: Monday may be trade deadline day in the NHL, but the most important move the Blue Jackets made recently occurred last summer when they acquired 23 year-old winger Brandon Saad from the Chicago Blackhawks. Already a two-time Stanley Cup champion, Saad brings a winning pedigree to Columbus along with offensive skill and a high hockey I.Q. Saad leads the Blue Jackets with a career-high 24 goals—his second straight 20-goal season—and he is second on the team with 40 points, his third straight 40-point campaign. His six game-winning goals lead the team and his five power play tallies are tied for third most. He has scored goals in back to back games and has netted three in the past four games and five in his past eight. Saad has one goal in two games against the Rangers this season.

Less than a minute later Dallas thought it had tied the game again at 9:30, but the officials ruled that Jason Spezza's shot did not completely cross the goal line. The no-goal ruling was upheld after a video review. NEW YORK RANGERS AT DALLAS STARS POST GAME RECAP

Rangers Close Trip With Thrilling 3-2 Win In Dallas

Saturday afternoon in Dallas the Rangers closed out a difficult, yet ultimately successful, road trip with a 3-2 victory over the Western Conference-leading Stars. The win came on the heels of Thursday's 2-1 victory over the Blues in St. Louis and made New York a winner in four of its last five games overall.
Henrik Lundqvist again was a difference maker in the nets for the Rangers, finishing with 36 saves. It was the eighth time in his last ten starts where Lundqvist held the opposition to two goals or fewer.
Ryan McDonagh snapped a 1-1 tie and provided the Rangers their second lead of the afternoon by scoring his eighth goal at 8:26 of the third period. With Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen out of position and scrambling to find his positioning after making a save on an Oscar Lindberg shot, McDonagh collected the loose puck and whipped a backhand shot from right wing off of Lehtonen and over the goal line to put the Rangers back in the lead.
Dallas very nearly tied the score a minute later off a scramble in Lundqvist's crease when Jason Spezza poked the puck to the goal line and McDonagh slid with his legs out stopping the shot. The on-ice call by the officials was that no goal had been scored, and the video review was ruled inconclusive, setting off an unpenalized tirade at the offials by Stars coach Lindy Ruff.
The Stars eventually did tie the game, with just 4:01 remaining in regulation. Lundqvist was unable to stop a Valeri Nichushkin left-wing slap shot that ticked off the stick of Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi.
However a bit more than a minute later Kevin Klein put the Rangers back ahead, 3-2, at 17:07, rifling a shot from between the circles past Lehtonen after collecting the puck when Derek Stepan's shot was blocked in front. Klein's sixth goal proved to be the game-winner.
After a scoreless first period, the Rangers and Stars swapped goals in the middle stanza, and justly arrived at the second intermission tied 1-1 in an evenly-played game.
The Rangers received the game's first power play 4:34 of the second period and it took them just four seconds to open the scoring. Derick Brassard won the offensive-zone face off back to Keith Yandle, who proceeded to fire a shot towards the Dallas net. Chris Kreider, stationed in front of Lehtonen, deflected the puck between the Dallas netminder's pads and into the cage for his 13th goal of the season, and second in as many games following his third-period game-winning tally Thursday night in St. Louis.
Dallas pulled even at 9:08 of the second when Colton Sceviour banged in a rebound after Lundqvist had made a sharp pad save on Tyler Seguin's quick snap shot.
Less than two minutes later Lundqvist made a terrific right-pad stop to rob Seguin on a point-blank put back from ten feet out. Earlier in the game Lundqvist had stopped Nichushkin twice on breakaways.
Lundqvist also got some help 3:45 into the second when he was handcuffed on high left-wing shot, ultimately dropping the puck in the blue paint before teammates Kevin Klein and Oscar Lindberg pounced on the loose disc and helped Lundqvist cover up before the Stars could reach the puck.
Many of the Rangers best scoring chances at the other end of the ice failed to even register shots on goal. Late in the first period Yandle set up Dominic Moore alone in front of the Dallas net with a slick pass, and after Moore drew Lehtonen to the ice he never got a shot off as Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak denied his seemingly open path to the cage. Then at 17:10 of the first J.T. Miller patiently slid back into the right wing circle before snapping a shot off the far post.
In the second period Kreider and Jesper Fast--playing with a full face shield after breaking his nose in practice on Friday--broke in on a two on one, but Fast was unable to tee up Kreider's saucer pass. Then at the ten-minute mark Mats Zuccarello shot wide on an open putback attempt. Four minutes later Derek Stepan stole the puck in the offensive zone, cut to the net, and before he could get a shot off, was knocked off the puck by Dallas' Jordie Benn.
The NHL trading deadline arrives at 3:00 Monday afternoon, and later that evening the Rangers will host the Columbus Blue Jackets at Madison Square Garden.

The Skinny:
It's another tough test on the road Saturday night in Dallas as the Rangers (35-20-6, 76 pts) skate against the Western Conference-leading Stars (38-18-6, 82 pts). The Rangers are finishing off a three-game road trip which has already seen them lose 5-2 in New Jersey to the Devils and then follow that up with a 2-1 win Thursday in St. Louis over the Blues. Overall the Rangers are now 13-14-3 on the road this season, though it's been better of late away from The Garden as New York has won four of its last five road contests. It's a good thing that the Rangers are getting things together on the road since, after Saturday, seven of their next ten games are away from MSG. Henrik Lundqvist starts in goal again for New York on Saturday. He is coming off another terrific performance, making 35 saves in Thursday's win, and has now won 30 games for the tenth time in his 11-year NHL career. His GAA is down to 2.29 on the season, and he has thrived on a heavier workload, having started 25 of the previous 28 games. He will need to be at his best, and need a stout defensive effort from his teammates, on Saturday because the Rangers will be facing the top scoring team in the entire NHL. The Stars feature two of the top three leading scorers in the NHL--Jamie Benn is second with 70 points and Tyler Seguin is third with 67--and John Klingberg is the second leading point producer among defensemen with 52 points. Benn and Seguin also each have 32 goals this season, tied for third most in the league. Dallas has scored three or more goals in ten of their last 12 games; but has also hit a rough patch in going 1-3-1 in their last five games after having won seven of eight. The main reason for that is the Stars struggles defensively of late. Including Thursday's 6-3 home-ice loss to the Winnipeg Jets, the Stars have surrendered six goals or more three times in the past eight days, and nine times on the season. Thursday both of Dallas' goaltenders--starter Antti Niemi and back up Kari Lehtonen--surrendered three goals in that loss to Winnipeg. The Stars will be without Patrick Eaves, who is out with an illness, on Saturday, while Rangers forward Jesper Fast is a question mark after suffering a broken nose in practice on Friday.
Head To Head:
This is the second and final meeting this season between the Rangers and Stars. Back on January 5 at Madison Square Garden the Rangers hammered Dallas 6-2, scoring three times in the third period to put the game away. Derek Stepan scored twice, including a shorthanded goal, for New York, while Keith Yandle, Derick Brassard, Viktor Stalberg and Jayson Megna also found the back of the net, and Henrik Lundqvist made 21 saves. Though Jason Spezza picked up a pair of assists and John Klingberg scored a goal for the Stars, the Rangers did a solid job shutting down Dallas' top guns as Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Patrick Sharp all were held off the score sheet. This contest in early January snapped a string of six consecutive games played between the Rangers and Stars that were decided by one goal. In their most recent visit to Dallas, back on December 29 last season, the Rangers dropped a 3-2 decision. J.T. Miller and Kevin Hayes scored in that game for New York.

Rangers-Marek Hrivik: The rookie forward will be playing his fourth straight game since being recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack last Sunday. He has done an extremely solid job at both ends of the ice in each game he has played, and he received some praise from head coach Alain Vigneault following Friday's practice. Rangers brass has been intrigued by Hrivik since he signed with the organization as an undrafted free agent four years ago. He has size, strength, and some offensive skill to go along with good speed, a physical style of play, and a high hockey I.Q. Since being called up from Hartford Hrivik has one assist and a +2 plus/minus rating, and has also contributed on the team's penalty killing unit. Most importantly he has played a confident game and limited his mistakes to minor ones, while adding some jump to the fourth line. The question, though, is with the NHL trade deadline looming on Monday, have the Rangers seen enough of Hrivik to believe he can be an NHL regular on a team with Stanley Cup aspirations or will they go out and trade for a more veteran player to kill penalties and play on the fourth line? Saturday's game is the club's last before the deadline, so Hrivik has one more chance to make a positive impression.
Stars-Patrick Sharp: There are so many reasons why Patrick Sharp is such an important member of the Dallas Stars. First and foremost, he is among the top offensive threats on the NHL's highest scoring team. The 34 year-old Sharp is Dallas' fourth-leading scorer with 47 points--a total which would actually be tops on the Rangers--and is fourth with 17 goals and third with five power play tallies. He is also tied for the club lead with five game-winning goals. A four-time 30-goal scorer, Sharp may not be as prolific as he once was, but he is still an important cog in the Stars offense. Perhaps his most important quality he brings to Dallas in his first year with the organization is that he is a proven winner, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the Chicago Blackhawks and a 2014 Olympic gold medalist with Team Canada. That is tremendously important to a Stars club that is fancying itself as legitimate Cup contender this season. Sharp has 129 games of playoff experience under his belt, with 81 points in those games including 15 in 23 games last spring as he helped Chicago to another title. The Rangers need to be aware of Sharp on Saturday, as well, as he is coming off a three assist performance Thursday night and has a four-game point-scoring streak (1-5-6) coming in to play.
