Season series: The New York Rangers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 at United Center on Oct. 7 after scoring three goals in the first period. It was the season opener for each team. Derek Stepan, Oscar Lindberg and Kevin Klein scored for New York. Rookie Artemi Panarin and Teuvo Teravainen scored for Chicago.
Rangers team scope: Goalie Henrik Lundqvist will start for New York, which could get captain Ryan McDonagh back from a concussion. McDonagh, who's missed four games, was cleared for contact and practiced Tuesday without restrictions. The defenseman said he expects to play, but Rangers coach Alain Vigneault will not decide until Wednesday. "Everything that I've seen so far, he looks fine," Vigneault told the Rangers website. "So, we'll see how he responds. Today was his first contact day. If he's all right [Wednesday morning], there's a good chance I'll put him in the lineup." New York might have to recall a defenseman from the American Hockey League. Defenseman Dan Boyle has the flu, according to the Rangers website, and will be reassessed Wednesday. Defenseman Marc Staal will be with his wife in the morning, when she's scheduled to be induced for the birth of their child. "[Boyle], last time he was sick, it lasted a couple of days, and Marc Staal is going to be a father [Wednesday] morning, so we're not sure how long that's going to take," Vigneault said. "Once we sort that out, we'll figure the lineup out."
