SEASON OPENER 2016-2017
New York Rangers (0-0-0) vs New York Islanders (0-0-0)
Madison Square Garden, NYC 7:00 PM TV: MSG, MSG+2
For the first time since 2007, tonight the New York Rangers will open a season at Madison Square Garden, and they will do so against their in-city rival, the New York Islanders. It's also the first time since 2008 the Rangers have started the season at home due to renovations of Madison Square Garden.
The Rangers will kick off their 90th Anniversary with an Opening Night Blue Carpet to welcome current players, Rangers greats, and our entire RangersTown community back to The Garden along with a special opening ceremony before game start.
The Rangers will open the 2016-17 season without defenseman Kevin Klein, who underwent an MRI on Tuesday that revealed a back strain that will keep him out of the lineup for tonight's game.
Rookies Jimmy Vesey and Pavel Buchnevich will make their NHL debuts tonight kicking off a new era of young talent in the Rangers lineup.
Alain Vigneault said that he knows what his lineup will be and that he will reveal it today.
At Wednesday's practice the following lines and defense pairs were:
Forwards;
Jimmy Vesey, Derek Stepan, Mats Zuccarello
Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich
JT Miller, Kevin Hayes, Rick Nash
Brandon Pirri skated with a power play unit and may be in on the fourth line in place of Michael Grabner.
Defense;
Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi, Marc Staal and Nick Holden, Brady Skjei and Adam Clendening with Dylan McIlrath as a scratch.
