1963: Rangers acquire Jacques Plante, Don Marshall and Phil Goyette from Montreal for Gump Worsley, Dave Balon, Len Ronson and Leon Rochefort.
1968: Former Rangers and Canadiens Right Wing Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion becomes the 12th coach in Rangers history. Geoffrion, claimed on waivers from Montreal on June 9, 1966 played his final two seasons for the Blueshirts before retiring in 1968 tallying 22 goals and 41 assists for 63 points in 117 games. "Boom Boom" would only coach 43 games for the Rangers but resigened due to ulcers in his stomach. On March 11, 2006 Geoffrion passed away in Atlanta, Georgia due to stomach cancer, the day his jersey number was to be retired by the Canadiens.
1981: 1980 Miracle on Ice Coach Herb Brooks becomes the 19th head coach in Rangers franchise history. Brooks would go to coach the Rangers for four and a half seasons from 1981-1985 before being replaced by GM Craig Patrick 45 games into the 1984-85 season. He would take the Rangers to the playoffs in his first three seasons but no further than the second round. In a combined 285 games Brooks would lead the Rangers to a record of 131-113-41.
At the age of 66, Brooks died in a single-car accident on the afternoon of August 11, 2003, near Forest Lake, Minnesota, on Interstate 35.
2014: The NY Rangers return to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994 but the return is spoiled when Justin Williams scores on a Dan Girardi giveaway at 4:36 into overtime to give the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win in Game 1 at the Staples Center.
