1978: The Rangers hire future Hall of Famer Fred Shero as the 17th head coach in franchise history. Shero, a former NHL Defenseman played 145 games for the Rangers from 1947-1950. During his playing career as a Blueshirt Shero tallied 6 goals and 14 assists along with 137 penalty minutes. As a coach, "Freddie the Fog" took the 3rd place Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals in his first season losing in the finals to the Montreal Canadiens 4 games to 1. In just over two years as head coach he coached 180 games with a record of 82-74-24. Shero was replaced just 20 games into his third season as head coach by GM Craig Patrick after losing all but four games to start the season.
