New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has agreed to terms with restricted free agent defenseman Tommy Hughes on a new contract.
Hughes, 24, skated in 59 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) this past season, registering two goals and seven assists for nine points, along with 48 penalty minutes. He tied AHL career-highs in goals, assists, and points in 2015-16. Hughes tallied a shorthanded goal and recorded two shots on goal on October 18, 2015 vs. Syracuse. In addition, he registered a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” on February 5, 2016 at Portland, recording a goal, an assist, and a fight in the contest.
The 6-2, 225-pounder has skated in 173 career AHL games over three seasons (2013-14 – 2015-16), all with the Wolf Pack, registering five goals and 20 assists for 25 points, along with 109 penalty minutes. Hughes made his AHL debut on October 5, 2013 vs. Norfolk, and he recorded his first career AHL goal, assist, and point on October 12, 2013 at Adirondack. In addition, he recorded three points (one goal, two assists) in 15 contests during the 2015 Playoffs while helping Hartford advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. Hughes tallied the series-winning goal in overtime in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Providence on May 1, 2015.
The London, Ontario, native was signed by the Rangers as an undrafted free agent on April 1, 2013.

Rangers agree to terms with McIlrath, Jooris

McIlrath, 24, skated in 34 games with the Rangers this past season, registering two goals and two assists for four points, along with a plus-seven rating and 64 penalty minutes. He tied for 13th among NHL rookies – and tied for fifth among NHL rookie defensemen – in plus/minus rating in 2015-16, as he posted a plus/minus rating of even or better in 29 of 34 games in which he played. Among NHL rookies who played at least 15 games this past season, McIlrath tied for fourth – and led all defensemen – in hits per game (2.7; 93 hits in 34 contests). He also ranked second on the Rangers – and led team defensemen – in hits per game in 2015-16.
The 6-5, 236-pounder registered his first career NHL assist/point on December 11, 2015 at Edmonton, and he recorded his first career NHL goal on December 15, 2015 vs. Edmonton. McIlrath became the first Ranger rookie defenseman to tally a goal since Ryan McDonagh on April 9, 2011. McIlrath posted a plus-one rating while making his NHL playoff debut in Game 2 of the First Round at Pittsburgh on April 16, 2016.
McIlrath has skated in 37 career NHL games with the Rangers over parts of three seasons (2013-14 – 2015-16), registering two goals and two assists for four points, along with a plus-six rating and 80 penalty minutes. He made his NHL debut with the Blueshirts on December 12, 2013 vs. Columbus.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native was selected by the Rangers in the first round, 10th overall, of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
Jooris, 26, skated in 59 games with the Calgary Flames this past season, registering four goals and nine assists for 13 points, along with 39 penalty minutes. He tied for the team lead in shorthanded assists (two) and tied for fifth on Calgary in shorthanded points (two) in 2015-16. The Flames posted a 9-2-1 record in contests which Jooris tallied at least one point this past season, and he posted a plus/minus rating of even or better in 45 of the 59 games in which he played during the season. He skated in his 100th career NHL game on February 23, 2016 at Los Angeles.
The 6-1, 187-pounder has skated in 119 career NHL games over two seasons (2014-15 and 2015-16), both with Calgary, registering 16 goals and 21 assists for 37 points, along with 55 penalty minutes. Over his first two NHL seasons, Jooris has been on the ice for only 14 power play goals against in 158:44 of ice time while shorthanded. He tallied 24 points (12 goals, 12 assists) in 60 games during his rookie season in the NHL in 2014-15, and he tied for third on Calgary in game-winning goals (four) during the season. Jooris registered his first career NHL goal/point while making his NHL debut on October 17, 2014 at Columbus. In addition, Jooris skated in nine contests with the Flames during the 2015 Playoffs, registering four penalty minutes.
Jooris has also skated in 75 career American Hockey League (AHL) games over parts of two seasons (2013-14 and 2014-15), registering 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points, along with 67 penalty minutes. He recorded his first professional goal, assist, and point as part of a two-point effort while making his professional debut with the Abbotsford Heat on October 4, 2013 at Lake Erie.
The Burlington, Ontario, native was signed by Calgary as an undrafted free agent on July 30, 2013.

RANGERS RESIGN 2, 4 HEAD TO SALARY ARBITRATION
The New York Rangers Announced Today that they have resigned Hartford Wolf Pack defenseman Mat Bodie and forward Nicklas Jensen.
Bodie signed a one year/two way deal worth $600K. Jensen's deal is also a one year/two way deal worth $600K.

- Bodie, 26, the Wolf Pack Captain for the final month of last season skated in 76 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) this past season, registering seven goals and 29 assists for 36 points, along with a plus-five rating and 38 penalty minutes. He established AHL career-highs in several categories in 2015-16, including games played, goals, assists, and points.
- Jensen, 23, skated in 68 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Utica Comets and Hartford Wolf Pack this past season, registering 19 goals and 18 assists for 37 points, along with a plus-10 rating and 32 penalty minutes.He established AHL career-highs in games played, goals, assists, points, and plus/minus rating in 2015-16.
- The NHLPA has announced that the following New York Rangers, Chris Kreider, Dylan McIlrath, Kevin Hayes and JT Miller have all filed for salary arbitration.
Tommy Hughes and Marek Hrivik are arbitration eligible but did not file.
Hearings will take place in late July through early August.

Rangers agree to terms with Michael Paliotta
New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has agreed to terms with free agent defenseman Michael Paliotta.
Paliotta, 23, skated in 68 games with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League (AHL) this past season, registering eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points, along with a plus-four rating and 29 penalty minutes. He tied for first among Lake Erie defensemen in goals and ranked second among Lake Erie defensemen in points in 2015-16. Paliotta tallied his first career AHL assist/point while making his AHL debut on October 9, 2015 at Rochester. In addition, he posted a plus-seven rating in eight playoff games while helping the Monsters win the Calder Cup.
The 6-4, 212-pounder has skated in two career NHL games, registering one assist and four penalty minutes. Paliotta tallied his first career NHL assist/point while making his NHL debut with Chicago on April 11, 2015 at Colorado. He skated in one game with Columbus during the 2015-16 season, registering two shots on goal on February 27, 2016 vs. Florida.
Prior to beginning his professional career, Paliotta played four seasons of collegiate hockey (2011-12 – 2014-15) at the University of Vermont. He skated in 144 games during his four seasons with the Catamounts, registering 19 goals and 64 assists for 83 points. Paliotta was named to the NCAA (East) Second All-American Team and was selected as the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman during his senior year in 2014-15, as he led the University of Vermont – and established collegiate career-highs – in assists (27), points (36), and plus/minus rating (plus-15).
Internationally, the Westport, Connecticut, native has represented the United States in several tournaments. Paliotta tallied one assist in six games while helping the United States win a gold medal at the 2011 IIHF U18 World Championship. He also recorded two assists in six contests while helping the United States earn a gold medal at the 2010 World U17 Hockey Challenge.
Paliotta was selected by Chicago in the third round, 70th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Clendening a right-handed defenseman that is more of a 7th or 8th defenseman. He spent most of last year with the Oilers (20 games), but also was with the Penguins organization for a few months. The former second round pick has 50 NHL games, with a line of 2-9-11. This is a depth signing, replacing one of the many departed players in Hartford.
Paliotta a 6'4" 212lb defenseman was shipped to Columbus as a part of the Brandon Saad trade, and was declined a qualifying offer by the Blue Jackets this June. He put up a line of 8-15-23 in 68 games with the Springfield Falcons, his first full pro season. It’s expected he will be in the AHL all year.

Rangers sign Nathan Gerbe and Michael Grabner

The New York Rangers on Friday agreed to terms with free agents Nathan Gerbe and Michael Grabner.
With the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015-16, Gerbe was on the ice for only four power play goals against while logging 48:59 of shorthanded ice time. He posted three goals and four assists in 47 games this season.

News of the Rangers trying to work out a trade for the Oilers 4th overall pick in last Friday's Entry Draft was reported by the NY Post's Larry Brooks claiming GM Jeff Gorton tried hard to move up to the first round but was unsuccessful.

RANGERS RFA QUALIFYING AND NON-QUALIFYING OFFERS ANNOUNCED
The following RFAs in the Rangers organization did not receive qualifying offers and are now free agents:
Luke Adam, Michael St. Croix, Chris McCarthy, Josh Nicholls, Michael Kantor and Samuel Noreau.
RFAs who were qualified and whose rights the Rangers retain include:
Chris Kreider, JT Miller, Kevin Hayes, Dylan McIlrath, Tommy Hughes, Mat Bodie, Marek Hrivik and Nicklas Jensen.
A player can accept his qualifying offer and play under that contract for one season. A player can also reject their qualifying offer to work on a different kind of contract.
LINDROS HHOF BOUND
Former Ranger Eric Lindros has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2016.
Lindros was acquired on Aug. 20, 2001 in a deal that sent Pavel Brendl, Jan Hlavac, Kim Johnsson, and 2003 third-round pick (Stefan Ruzicka) to Philadelphia for Lindros and future considerations (conditional first-round pick, conditions not met.) Aug. 23, 2001 - P.J. Stock signed as free agent.
In 192 games with the Rangers from 2001-2004 Lindros scored 66 goals, 92 assists including 73 points in 72 games in 01-02.
RANGERS RUMOR RUMBLINGS
Pending NY Islanders UFA Matt Martin has come up in discussions as a possible signing the Rangers might be looking into come this Friday. Martin just finished a four-year deal with the Islanders with a cap hit of $1 million and an actually salary of $1.3 million and should be able to be signed for 2.5-3M per season. Martin is an effective 4th liner but is not a "penalty killer" so the 2-3M range may be a little steep for a 4th line player with cap restrictions.
Many UFA names from the KHL have been linked to the Rangers with the thought of making Pavel Buchnevich's transition to the NHL a little bit easier. Names included were Nikita Nikitin, Anton Khudobin, Viktor Tikhonov and Alexander Radulov. Radulov has reportedly returned to the KHL. Tikhonov is a young skilled player that hasn't been consistant who served as translator for Artemi Panarin while with the Blackhawks. Former Ranger Pavel Valentenko's name has been thrown around as well. The Rangers main concern the Rangers have is Buchnevich does not speak English and the only other player on the Rangers who does is Chris Kreider along with this being his transitioning year from KHL to the NHL.

DRAFT WEEKEND RUMORS: Close But No Cigar
Following Friday and Saturday at the 2016 NHL Draft many "rumors" were squashed concerning possibly trades surrounding the Rangers. Although in trade discussions throughout the 48 hour period with all NHL GM's present at the draft Jeff Gorton could only pull off a small trade bringing defenseman Nick Holland for a 2017 4th Round Draft pick from Colorado.
Rangers fans were teased all day Friday with rumors of the Rangers pursuing trades for Kevin Shattenkirk, Cam Fowler, Matt Dumba and at one point in the day on Saturday even rumors of the Rangers having substantial talks with pending UFA Steven Stamkos. Many Rangers players were involved throughout the day on "Social Media" Rumors including Rick Nash putting in his list of 12 teams he could be traded to. Derek Stepan's name popped up quite frequently along with tales of Gorton shopping both defenseman Dan Girardi and Marc Staal to numerous teams even though they both have no-move clauses in their contracts. The rumors seem to be just that, rumors and disappointment to the Garden Faithful.
UFA RUMORS
Along with the rumblings of talking to Stamkos, the Rangers were linked to a few UFA's this weekend with names such as Thomas Vanek who was bought-out by the Minnesota Wild and Michael Grabner who will be coming off a 3M 5 year contact with Toronto who received him in a trade last season with the Islanders. Come Friday July 1st it might just be an interesting day for the Rangers and their fans if Gorton can clear cap space and pull together enough money to sign their RFA's and bring in some new blood to the "Blueshirts".
SEARCH FOR NEW ASSISTANT COACH COMING TO AN END?
With GM Jeff Gorton saying that the Rangers are close to deciding on a replacement for recently departed Ulf Samuelsson to Charlotte of the AHL. Said to be in the mix are former NY Ranger and current Wolf Pack D-Coach Jeff Beukeboom, and former NHL'er Darryl Sydor. Fan favorite Brian Leetch is reportedly not interested in taking the position alongside Vigeault on the Rangers bench. Gorton did say that the team will take another week or so to make a decision but nothing is imminent.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Will Jeff Gorton make moves to improve the stale Rangers corps? It's believed he will, although no moves were made to clear cap space in order to sign pending UFAs or trades made to bring in "New Blood" it wasn't for a lack of trying as Gorton was said to be burniing up the phone lines Friday and Saturday along with many discussions with other GMs. It's still early in the race towards July 1st and Gorton does have time to make the "right" moves heading forward. Surely there will be some popular and unpopular deals done but he seems to have a "game plan" in place and is unwilling to make deals just for the sake of making them. Said to be looking for the best deal available and not willing to take "less than what's worth" is not any easy task to endeavor. Improvement take time especially when he came into his first full off season as GM holding onto NMC and NTC Contract clauses with high salary players such as Nash, Girardi and Staal. Gorton will get the job done, just be patient Rangers fans.
