Rangers Acquire DeAngelo and 2017 7th Overall Pick from Arizona

New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Anthony DeAngelo and the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta.

DeAngelo, 21, split this past season between the Coyotes and the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League (AHL). He skated in 39 NHL games with Arizona in 2016-17, registering five goals and nine assists for 14 points, along with 37 penalty minutes. DeAngelo ranked second among NHL rookie defensemen in goals per game (0.13) and tied for fifth among NHL rookie defensemen (min. 10 games played) in points per game (0.36) this past season. He registered his first career NHL goal/point while making his NHL debut on Nov. 8, 2016 at Colorado, and he notched a point in six of his first eight career NHL contests.

The 5-11, 183-pounder skated in 25 AHL games with Tucson this past season, registering three goals and 13 assists for 16 points, along with 31 penalty minutes. DeAngelo notched at least one point in 12 of the 25 contests he played with the Roadrunners in 2016-17, and he posted a four-game assist/point streak from Oct. 22, 2016 at Bakersfield to Nov. 2, 2016 vs. Texas. DeAngelo has played 94 career AHL games over parts of two seasons (2015-16 and 2016-17), registering 59 points (nine goals, 50 assists), along with 115 penalty minutes. He ranked fourth among AHL defensemen in assists (37) and ranked seventh among AHL defensemen in points (43) while playing with the Syracuse Crunch in 2015-16.

Prior to beginning his professional career, DeAngelo played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Sarnia Sting and Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (2011-12 - 2014-15). In 236 career OHL games, he registered 55 goals and 186 assists for 241 points, along with 311 penalty minutes. In his final season in the OHL in 2014-15, DeAngelo was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Defenseman of the Year, which is awarded to the top defenseman in all of the three Canadian Major Junior Leagues (Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Western Hockey League). DeAngelo established OHL career-highs in goals (25), assists (64), and points (89) in 2014-15, and he led all defensemen in the three Canadian Major Junior Leagues in each category. He also led OHL defensemen in assists in 2012-13 and 2013-14, and he led OHL defensemen in points in 2013-14.

The Sewell, New Jersey, native was selected by Tampa Bay in the first round, 19th overall, of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

The Rangers now have six selections in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft: two in the first round (seventh overall and 21st overall), one in the fourth round (102nd overall), one in the fifth round (145th overall), one in the sixth round (157th overall), and one in the seventh round (207th overall).

Stepan, 27, has skated in 515 career NHL games over seven seasons (2010-11 - 2016-17), all with the Rangers, registering 128 goals and 232 assists for 360 points, along with 130 penalty minutes.

Raanta, 28, has appeared in 94 career NHL games over parts of four seasons with the Rangers and Chicago (2013-14 - 2016-17), posting a 47-23-9 record, along with a 2.32 GAA, a .917 SV%, and eight shutouts.

NYR IIHF 2016 World Championships Notes

Mats Zuccarello scored his first goal at the 2016 World Championships. Zucc has now recorded two points (1-1-2) in three games at the World Championships.

Rangers prospect Nicklas Jensen earned his third point at the World Championships, picking up an assist in Denmark's 3-2 overtime loss to Switzerland, Jensen now has 2 goals and an assist for 3 points in the tourney.

Derick Brassard, Brady Skjei, Zuccarello and Jensen all will be in action for their respective countries today.

DEREK STEPAN Center

 Stepan was actually a very solid player for the Rangers last season collecting 22 goals and 31 assists, his second highest point production and highest goal scoring in his NHL Career. Stepan logged in an average of 11.5 minutes per game in 72 games with a faceoff percentage of 46.6 (515-589) also a career high. Stepan who was signed to a 6 year contract last July is under wraps for the next 5 seasons with a cap hit of 6.5 million per year. Although the Rangers had a sub par season to say the least, Step was as he has always been, a solid two way player playing both power play and penalty kill minutes, collecting 3 shorthanded and 5 power play goals. A team first player who always gives 100% even through injury.

Stepan Returns but Rangers Fall to Jets

The return of Derek Stepan was not enough for the Rangers Friday night, who dropped their second game in as many nights, 5-2, to the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre.

J.T. Miller and Dan Boyle each scored while Henrik Lundqvist finished with 31 saves in the loss.
Stepan returned after a 10-game absence due to broken ribs he suffered on Nov. 27. He started the night centering Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast, but was later moved as the pivot between Emerson Etem and Rick Nash.

The Rangers struggled at the onset, falling behind early on two Bryan Little goals in the first 7:34 of the contest.

Winnipeg capitalized on a Ryan McDonagh turnover deep in the Rangers' zone when his clear behind the net was knocked down by Blake Wheeler, who fed Little in the slot. The winger waited out Lundqvist, who got caught out of his crease, and fired the puck into the open cage at 5:03. 

Little struck again 2:29 later when he redirected a Wheeler pass from the point into the net. While it was originally declared no goal, it was quickly overturned at the next whistle, putting Winnipeg up two.

The Rangers broke through with just under six minutes to play in the first period. Keith Yandle carried the puck just inside the Winnipeg zone, faked a shot and slid a pass over to Kevin Hayes, who fired the puck on net. Connor Hellebuyck got most, but not all of the shot, and Miller slammed the loose puck into the net to cut the Rangers' deficit to 2-1. The goal was Miller's sixth of the season and his team-leading 12th road point of the year.

But the Jets got back up by two 3:30 later when Dustin Byfuglien blasted a shot from the point that put Winnipeg up 3-1 with 2:29 to play.

The Rangers surived a two-man deficit with Hayes and Nash in the box, and Lundqvist robbed Mark Scheifele on a breakaway to keep the Rangers in the game.

It paid off, as Boyle's third goal of the season on the power play got the Blueshirts back to within one with 5:48 left. Derick Brassard won the offensive zone faceoff cleanly to McDonagh, whose shot from the point was blocked in front and skittered right to Boyle, who fired into the open cage. The goal was Boyle's third goal in his last six games, and he now has five points over that span.

As earlier, the momentum was short-lived, as Winnipeg scored just over two minutes later when Tyler Myers beat Lundqvist top-shelf to get back a two-goal lead, and put the game out of reach.

Andrew Ladd scored an empty-net goal at 18:59.

Prior to the game, the Rangers recalled goaltender Magnus Hellberg and defenseman Chris Summers from Hartford, and sent defenseman Brady Skjei back to the Wolf Pack after two games.

Vigneault said goaltender Antti Raanta was feeling better and is day-to-day with a head injury after taking a slapshot off his mask Thursday in Minnesota.

The Rangers return home Sunday night to take on their Metropolitian Division rival Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden.

Stepan and Klein Practice On Monday

The Rangers returned home from a fairly dismal 0-2-1 road trip through Western Canada and were greeted with a happy sight Monday afternoon at their optional practice. Both of the team's key injured players--Derek Stepan and Kevin Klein--were back on the ice with their teammates taking part in the workout, albeit wearing the bright yellow non-contact jerseys.
"It's good to see because they are two guys who mean a lot to this team," stated goaltender Henrik Lundqvist after practice. "It's good to see (their recoveries) are going in the right direction. I don't how much longer before they play, but it's good to have them out there (practicing) again."
Stepan and Klein have been skating together while the team was out west, and both said on Monday that they "felt good" in their initial practice following their respective injuries.
The Rangers lost Stepan and Klein in a four-day span in late November. Stepan suffered broken ribs when checked into the boards by Boston's Matt Beleskey on November 27, while Klein suffered an oblique injury on November 30 in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
"It felt good to be out there with the guys," said Klein. "It was Step and my first time out there and I think it went pretty well for the most part. That was the first hard skate, so I'm just getting my legs back and making sure it reacts well tomorrow to what we did today."
Klein added that he thinks the injury "is pretty close" to being healed, but he would not speculate as to a return date. Neither would Stepan, who said that "it's weird with ribs in how they heal".
Head coach Alain Vigneault said that if both players feel good Tuesday then they could take part in the morning skate at Madison Square Garden before the Rangers face off with the Edmonton Oilers, though, of course, neither would be able to play in the actual game.
"You have that inner person that wants to be out there with the boys as bad as possible," stated Klein. "If it was just a pain thing I could be out there playing no problem, but it's the fact that your core, you use so much of it in every aspect of the game, you don't want to be out there hurting the team or reinjuring it."
Klein explained that his oblique was sore before that game against Carolina and then he heard it pop during a play and knew immediately he was hurt.
As for Stepan he explained that his focus was on being "the eyes" for teammate Kevin Hayes while making a pass to him during that contest with the Bruins right before getting hit by Beleskey.
"I never saw (Beleskey) coming," explained Stepan. "When I made the pass I was trying to protect (Hayes). I wasn't protecting myself, I guess. I was trying to be (Hayes') eyes."

The Rangers are getting goals from players throughout the lineup

Henrik Lundqvist said recently that it’s “huge” for the Rangers that they don’t need to rely on one line or just a few guys to score and create offense. 

He said that the ability to have scoring up and down the lineup “gives confidence to the group” and that moving forward it will be important to have different players step up at different times

Derek Stepan said that the Rangers have really good depth that should help them through the season and into the playoffs. (NYR)

The only Ranger to play at least 14 games this season and not record a goal is Dan Boyle.
