1951:  Allan Stanley is named the new Captain of the New York Rangers, replacing Frank Eddolls.

1967 : Ed Giacomin blanks the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 at MSG recording the 11th shutout of his NHL career. 

1973: Rod Gilbert scores a goal and adds three assists as the Rangers win 5-2 over Detroit, at Madison Square Garden.

1980:  Ron Greschner becomes the first defenseman in New York Rangers history to score 100 career goals. 
His milestone goal comes in a 3-3 tie against the North Stars in Minnesota.

1926: The Rangers host the Detroit Red Wings for the first time, and play to a 1-1 tie.

1974: Emile Francis coaches his 605th game behind the Rangers bench, passing Lester Patrick for the most in Rangers history.

1985: Rangers acquire Larry Melnyk and Todd Strueby from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Mike Rogers.

1993: Mike Richter establishes a Ranger record with a 20-game unbeaten streak, defeating the Ottawa Senators, 6-3, at MSG.

THIRD PERIOD RALLY PUTS RANGERS OVER DUCKS 3-1

Namestnikov's 3 Points, Hayes Shorthander Ends 3 Game Skid

Down 1-0 after a scoreless period and Anaheim's Pontus Aberg 2nd period tally the Rangers came into the third period with a chip on their shoulder holding the Ducks to 3 shots on goal in the final period while putting up 15 of their own.

Vladislav Namestnikov opened the scoring for the Rangers close to the half way point of the 3rd to pull the Rangers even 1-1 which held until the final minute. At the 17:25 mark of the period Filip Chytil rushed into the Anaheim zone and was pushed from behind by the Ducks defender leading to a collision with goaltender Chad Johnson. Chytil although he looked as he tried to stop before the run in was assessed a 2 minute penalty for goaltender interference putting the Rangers down a man with 2:35 to go. Just as the Rangers penalty was about to expire center Kevin Hayes rushed into Anaheim's zone and put one past Johnson for what would be the game winner with :05 left on the man advantage. Filip Chytil added an empty net goal to put the game out of reach for the Ducks with just 19 seconds remaining in regulation.

The win ended the Rangers 3 game skid, the last win coming on December 8 in Florida, a 5-4 shootout win and their first regulation win since a 4-2 win against Ottawa at MSG on November 26.

Backup Alexandar Georgiev stopped 14 shots to pick up his 5th win of the season. Vladislav Namestnikov tied a career high 3 point game picking up a goal and two primary assists. Kevin Hayes who tallied his own 3 point night in the previous loss to Arizona on Sunday picked up his 9th goal of the season.

The Rangers have now won both meetings in the season series against Anaheim in 2018-19. The Rangers have won eight of their last 10 games against the Ducks (8-2-0 record), dating back to Jan. 7, 2015.

STRUGGLING RANGERS LOOK FOR WIN AGAINST ANAHEIM

New York Rangers (14-13-5)  vs Anaheim Ducks (19-11-5)

After two 4-3 overtime losses in a row to Vegas and Arizona along with a 6-3 loss in Tampa Bay, the Rangers will look to snap their 3 game skid tonight as they host the Anaheim Ducks at the Garden. The Rangers are 2-5-3 in their last 10 games coming into tonight's contest.

In the previous game against Vegas, Kevin Hayes picked up 3 assists to move him into the team lead with 18 on the season, Chris Kreider picked up his team leading 15th goal and Mika Zibanejad tallied a power play goal to move his points lead up to 29.

Henrik Lundqvist who picked up the loss on Sunday Afternoon although stopping 37 of 41 shots was given a maintenance day yesterday at practice. The day off, rare for Lundqvist brings up questions of possible injury. When asked if Alexandar Georgiev will get into the Rangers goal for a start, coach David Quinn answered was a short one word response of "Soon". Georgiev who was recalled from Hartford after a brief stint for the second time this season to "get some work in" played in 5 straight games for the Wolf Pack while Lundqvist started all 4 since Georgiev went down on December 3.

The Ducks will be playing the second game of a back-to-back road set after earning their fourth straight win Monday by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-2, on Monday night. John Gibson earned the win against the Penguins by making 28 saves. Anaheim (19-11-5) may go with new backup Chad Johnson who would be making his debut with the club, he claimed off waivers from the St. Louis Blues on December 11 after Ryan Miller went down to a knee sprain.

This is the second of two games between the Rangers and Ducks this season. The Rangers took the first contest with a shootout winin Anaheim 3-2. Alexander Georgiev backstopped the Rangers stopping 28 shots on 30 attempts through overtime. Rangers goals were scored by Kevin Hayes (power play) and rookie center Brett Howden. The Shootout period went four rounds with Georgiev stopping Pontus Aberg and Ryan Getzlaf. Both Mats Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad were succesful in their attempts against the Ducks' John Gibson.

Bill Cook, Bun Cook, Frank Boucher, Ching Johnson and Murray Murdoch reach the milestone when the Rangers and Montreal Canadiens skate to a 1-1 tie at Madison Square Garden.

2008: Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival scores on a penalty shot in the second period, and then scores in overtime to give New York a 3-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center. 
Rozsival becomes the second player since the NHL re institutes overtime in 1983 to score on a penalty shot before winning the game with an overtime goal.

2011: Brad Richards scores the game-winning goal with 0.1 seconds remaining in regulation, giving the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

RANGERS SUFFER ANOTHER OVERTIME LOSS

Despite Hayes 3 Point Game, Lundqvist's Acrobatics Rangers Fall to Vegas 4-3

Even Henrik Lundqvist and his acrobatic saves couldn't help the Rangers overcome the Vegas Golden Knights this afternoon at Madison Square Garden. With 37 saves on the night the story wasn't the amount of saves made but the amount of quality scoring chances that Lundqvist thwarted time after time against the Golden Knights.

The Rangers took any early first period lead 1-0 when Brady Skjei tallied his third goal of the season 1:3  into the game. They would hold the lead until just under 10 minutes later while on the penalty kill as Vegas' Reilly Smith tied the game 1-1 on a fluke when a weird bounce that came back off the glass behind the Rangers net and hit both defenseman Skjei and Lundqvist to just squibble into the net.

Vegas opened the scoring in the second at the 6:09 mark as Paul Stastny tallied his first of the season for the 2-1 lead. Mika Zibanejad would even the score 2-2 on the Rangers power play, their 4th man advantage tally in the past two games, at 12:10 but Vegas would answer back to retake the lead 3-2 just a minute later when William Carrier scored.

The Rangers evened the game up 3:29 into the third period on a goal from Chris Kreider for his team leading 15th of the season. Both the Rangers and Golden Knights exchanged scoring chances for the next 16 minutes of regulation play with Lundqvist out shining his opponent Marc Andre Fleury with more spectacular saves as he had done all night.

Although the Rangers put up a good fight they just couldn't overcome another Vegas odd man rush as just after a Rangers sustained presence in the Vegas zone with tired legs after a long shift, Vegas, Alex Tuch got past the the Rangers defense to deke Lundqvist who went for a sprawling save but was beat his glove side high at 2:11 to end the game in favor of the visitors. 

Kevin Hayes tallied his 18th assist of the season, picking up an assist on all 3 Rangers goals tonight and giving him his 200th NHL Career point.
