RANGERS FALL SHORT IN STRONG PERFORMANCE AGAINST TORONTO

Third Period Rally Can't Catch Leafs

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 31 shots while Kevin Hayes tallied 2 goals but the Rangers just fell short of a comeback bid against the superior play of the Toronto Maple Leafs losing 5-3.

Toronto opened the scoring early in the first period with a goal from Patrick Marleau and took the 1-0 lead into the 15 minute mark of the second when Neal Pionk picked up his 5th of the season to tie the game 1-1.

The Rangers would falter in the third when Andreas Johnsson and Morgan Rielly scored back to back goals 4 minutes apart. The 3-1 deficit didn't deter the Rangers as they answered back quickly within a minute later Kevin Hayes cut the lead 3-2. Mitchell Marner would score his 1st of the game before Hayes could deflect a Marc Staal shot past Fredrik Andersen to keep tie game within reach 4-3. Marner would add his second of the game to make it 5-3 while Georgiev was on the Rangers bench for the extra skater with the Rangers net empty with 20 seconds remaining.
