Today in NYR History 7/30:


1998: Defenseman Kevin Lowe announces his retirement after 19 years as a player.
The Rangers acquired Lowe from the Edmonton Oilers for Roman Oksiuta and the 1993 NHL Entry Draft 3rd round pick (#60-Alexander Kerch)in 1992. Lowe played for New York from 1992 until 1996 when he became an unrestricted free agent in '96 returning to Edmonton for 2 more seasons.
Along with six other ex-Oilers, (Glenn Anderson, Jeff Beukeboom, Adam Graves, Craig MacTavish, Mark Messier, and Esa Tikkanen) Lowe was a member of the Rangers Stanley Cup-winning team in 1994.
In 217 games with the Rangers Lowe tallied 10 goals and 38 assists for 48 points and was a plus 20.


2005: The Rangers select Marc Staal in the first round (12th overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Earlier in the day the Rangers acquired the the 1st round pick to draft Staal from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for their 2005 1st round pick (#16-Alex Bourret) and the 2005 their 2nd round pick (#41-Ondrej Pavelec)
