Rangers Beat Flyers In Shootout, 3-2
courtesy Blueshirts United
Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 34
shots in regulation and overtime and went unblemished during the
three-round shootout as the Rangers defeated the Philadelhia Flyers 3-2
Saturday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center.
Mats Zuccarello scored in the first round of the shootout--the only goal scored by either team--as New York defeated Philadelphia for the first time this season (1-1-1).
For the second straight game--both on the road and against divisional opponents--the Rangers entered the third period holding as one-goal lead only to let that lead slip away. On Thursday night in Brooklyn a 1-0 Rangers lead turned into a 3-1 defeat against the Islanders; while on Saturday the Flyers pulled even midway through the third on a Wayne Simmonds power play goal, which eventually forced the game-deciding overtime and shootout.
It was the 16th time already this season that the Flyers have played overtime, and the second time in three outings against New York.
The Rangers surrendered the game's first goal--scored by Brayden Schenn just 3:58 into play--but bounced back to pull even before the first intermission on a J.T. Miller power play goal at 16:48.
With time winding down on their second power play of the afternoon, the Rangers struck for their first power play goal in eight games when Miller accepted a long head-man pass from Ryan McDonagh and proceeded to rip a bullet from the left circle which beat Flyers goalie Steve Mason to the far side. The goal snapped New York's prolonged 0-for-19 funk on the power play, and was Miller's ninth of the season.
Chris Kreider gave the visitors their first lead of the game by scoring his first goal in seven games 4:49 into period number two. Marc Staal attempted a long home run pass from his own zone to Derek Stepan at the Flyers blue line. Though the puck was knocked down by a pair of Flyers before reaching him, an alert Stepan hopped on the loose disc and zipped a pass to Rick Nash streaking up right wing into the offensive zone. Nash then sent a gorgeous pass towards the front of the Flyers net where Kreider barreled through to chip it over Mason for the go-ahead score, his seventh goal of the season.
New York managed only three other shots in the second period--getting out shot 11-4--but Lundqvist was sharp between the pipes and also had a bit of luck when Claude Giroux's driving right-wing shot caught iron. Giroux also hit the post early in the third period on a long screened shot.
Lundqvist anticipated perfectly to deny Jakub Voracek's power play redirection midway through the second, and also made a sprawling save on rookie Shayne Gostisbehere, who broke in after picking off an errant Dan Boyle pass in the neutral zone with just over a minute remaining in the middle stanza.
The Flyers eventually scored the equalizer, however, when Simmonds was left alone at the left post for an easy power play slam dunk at 10:33 of the third period. The Rangers have now allowed at least one power play goal in six of the last eight games.
Simmonds got behind Kevin Klein minutes later and had a clear breakaway, but Lundqvist made a sensational save to keep the score tied.
