The Rangers acquire Pat LaFontaine from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a second round pick in the 1998 NHL Draft and future considerations.
In 67 regular season games with the Rangers LaFontaine scored 23 goals and 39 assists for 62 points. During his one season with the Rangers, he tied for the team lead in goals scored, and recorded his 1,000th career NHL point.
In a game against the Ottawa Senators on March 16, 1998, LaFontaine accidentally collided with teammate Mike Keane and suffered another concussion. LaFontaine missed the remainder of the season and all of the next season, announcing his retirement formally on October 12, 1999
LaFontaine is one of five players in NHL history to skate for all three teams based in the state of New York. The others were Mike Donnelly, Jason Dawe, Martin Biron, and Taylor Pyatt. Unique amongst them, LaFontaine played his entire career in the state of New York while Donnelly, Pyatt, Biron and Dawe all played for additional teams outside the state in their careers. LaFontaine once joked about it, saying "I think I'm the only player in history who has been traded twice and hasn't had to change his license plate.

NYR TODAY FRIDAY 9/28: Today in NYR History

Today in NYR History 9/28:

1926: Rangers purchase the contract of Frank Boucher from Vancouver in the WHL.
Boucher played for the Rangers until he retired in 1937–38. Boucher centered the famous Bread Line with the brothers Bill and Bun Cook, and together they helped the Rangers win the Stanley Cup in 1928 and 1933, also reaching the Finals in 1932.
Frank was not only a brilliant forward, but was also one of the game's classiest. Lady Byng, wife of Viscount Byng, the Governor-General of Canada, donated a trophy to be awarded to the NHL's "most gentlemanly player." While playing for the New York Rangers, Boucher won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy 7 times in 8 years. He was then given the trophy outright, and Lady Byng donated another trophy to the NHL.
The Rangers hired him to coach the New York Rovers, a minor-league team that also played at Madison Square Garden, as his apprenticeship to coaching the Rangers. When general manager Lester Patrick made the decision to retire from coaching prior to the 1939–40 season, he hired Boucher, who led his Ranger club to the last Stanley Cup. The franchise would be in existence for 68 seasons before they won a Cup without Boucher being directly involved.
After finishing first in the NHL's regular season in 1942, the Rangers lost in the playoffs to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Soon they became victims of the military draft of World War II and went into a steep decline. In 1943–44 NHL season the New York Rangers were so bad that Boucher came out of retirement for 15 games to play where he recorded 14 points. The Rangers finished the 50 game season with only 6 wins. From 1940 to 1972 they reached the Stanley Cup Finals only once.
When Patrick retired, Frank took over as general manager. He got the Rangers into the playoffs in 1947–48 with his trade to get Buddy O'Connor and Frank Eddolls. He stepped down from coaching to concentrate on his manager's job and hired Lynn Patrick, Lester's son and an ex-teammate, to coach the Rangers, and Lynn came very close to winning the Stanley Cup in 1950, proving Boucher astute in hiring him as coach. But the Rangers were an aging team, and eroded. Lynn Patrick resigned to go to Boston, and neither Neil Colville nor Bill Cook, also former teammates of Boucher's, could get the Rangers into the playoffs. General John Kilpatrick, the Rangers' owner, thought about replacing Boucher, but he held off.
During the 1945–46 season, Boucher became the first coach to use two goalies regularly. Alternating Charlie Rayner and Jim Henry every game, and later, every four to six minutes, he proved the usefulness of having two goalies.
Frank went back behind the bench in 1953–54, but could not get the Rangers into the playoffs. He then hired Muzz Patrick, another son of Lester and ex-teammate, to coach the team, but the Rangers won only 17 games and missed the playoffs again. So General Kilpatrick had a talk with Frank and reluctantly expressed that Frank could not build the Rangers into a winner, and recommended Frank resign as general manager. Frank thought it over, realizing that it was better than being fired. He then typed his resignation and handed it in to the General, ending his 29-year association with the Rangers.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958. In 1998, he was ranked number 61 on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players. His uniform number 7 hangs in the rafters of Madison Square Garden, although it was retired for a later Ranger, Rod Gilbert. Although later Rangers such as Gilbert and Mark Messier have been more honored by recent fans, Boucher's status as the star of two Ranger Stanley Cups and the coach behind another marks him, except perhaps for team builder Lester Patrick, as the greatest Ranger of them all.
In 1974, Boucher wrote When the Rangers Were Young, a book about his experiences with the old-time Broadway Blueshirts, giving him one last moment of fame during his lifetime. He died of cancer on December 12, 1977 in the town of Kemptville, Ontario, near Ottawa at the age of 76.

1988: The Rangers trade Chris Jensen to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Michael Boyce.

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 26 of 28 shots he faced. Georgiev made 14 saves on 16 shots in the third period allowing goals from Philadelphia's  Ivan Provorov and James van Riemsdyk but held on  to earn a win in tonight's game.

The Rangers special teams were 2 for 2 on the power play with Lettieri and Namestnikov registering the goals. The Rangers penalty Kill held the Flyers scoreless in two opportunities.

1931: Rangers acquire Art Somers and Vic Desjardins from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Paul I. Thompson.

1991: The Rangers and Los Angeles Kings play an outdoor exhibition game at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

The air temperature at puck drop was around 85 °F (29 °C), going as high as 95 °F (35 °C) during the course of the game, with 28% humidity, though the ice held up well. The Rangers started the game well, scoring two goals by Tony Amonte and Doug Weight for a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period, the Kings scored three goals by Tony Granato, Brian Benning, and Sylvain Couturier to get a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period. The Kings added two more goals in the third period by Jari Kurri and Wayne Gretzky for a 5-2 win.

The Kings captain was Wayne Gretzky, while the Rangers had yet to name a captain for the upcoming season. The Rangers previous captain Kelly Kisio had signed with the San Jose Sharks during the off-season. Mark Messier wouldn't be named the Rangers next captain, until after joining the team October 5, 1991, being traded from the Edmonton Oilers for the Rangers' Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice and 1989 draft pick Louie DeBrusk.

A second exhibition game was scheduled between the Rangers and the Kings to take place on September 29, 1991, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The game, however, was cancelled, due to poor and unsafe ice conditions at the Charlotte Coliseum.

PRESEASON GAME DAY PREVIEW: RANGERS VS FLYERS 9/27

Preseason Ends with Trip to Philly

New York Rangers (2-2-0) vs Philadelphia Flyers (3-2-1)
Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia, PA
TV: MSG, MSG+

The Rangers look to end the 2018 Preseason match ups with a win tonight in Philly after a tough overtime home loss last night to the Islanders.

Having lost the first of the two contests in their preseason home opener 6-4 on with the help of Philly's 3 first period tallies the Rangers will look for a little retribution and end the preseason on a high note.

In the first meeting back on September 19, the Rangers registered 40 shots on goal in the game including 18 shots on goal in the third period.

Pavel Buchnevich registered two points (one goal, one assist), including a power play goal, recorded five shots on goal, and posted a plus-one rating. Ryan Spooner tallied two points (one goal, one assist), both on the power play, and registered two shots on goal, Filip Chytil recorded a goal and logged 19:17 of ice time and Matt Beleskey registered a goal, tied for the game-high with three blocked shots, and tied for the team-high with three hits.

Alexandar Georgiev who started the game allowed 5 of the Flyers gaols while in relief Dustin Tokarski allowed 1 goal and stopping 10 shots on goal.

Since the last meeting the Rangers have answered the call of coach David Quinn with more physical play along with looking out for each other without putting the team in a bad way.

No lineups have been released but as usual should be available sometime early this afternoon.

RANGERS VS ISLANDERS PRESEASON GAME DAY WRAP UP 4/26

RANGERS FALL TO ISLANDERS IN OVERTIME 4-3

Two go ahead goals were not enough to fight off the Islanders in the final preseason game on home ice for the Rangers.

A blast from Mat Pulock and a screen in front of Henrik Lundqvist early in the first period would set the tone of the game.

Down early in the first the Rangers did answer back just before time expired in the period while on the power play. With the Islanders down a man after committing a too many men on the ice infraction, Pavel Buchnevich would tie the game with just 37 seconds left in the period,

The Rangers were able to finally get ahead of their crosstown rivals with a goal just under 6 minutes into the second period from Mika Zibanejad. The Rangers were able to hold onto the lead for their longest of the game until just under 7 minutes later Mat Pulock once agian struck from the point with a blast that went by two defenders then Lundqvist to tie the game until the third period.

The Rangers once again on the power play, as the Ises' Tom Kuhnhackl took a seaat for two minutes with a holding penalty. The Rangers won the faceoff and Mika Zibanejad was able to pick up his second of the game past Robin Lehner for the go ahead goal. Unfortunately the lead only lasted less then a minute when the Islanders went in on the Rangers on a 2 on 3 rush and veteran defenseman Thomas Hickey gave the Isles the tying goal that would last through regulation.

The Rangers would start off the overtime period with the trio of Lias Andersson, Filip Chytil and Neal Pionk. At the end of their shift Pionk who had just rushed into the Islanders end would get caught back leaving the defending duties to Chytil who could not catch up to the Isles Anthony Beauvillier rushing into the Rangers end, Beauvillier flat out beat Chytil and slid one through Lundqvist's five-hole for the overtime winner.

The Rangers were 2-for-4 on the power play in tonight's contest and have recorded eight power play goals through the first five games of the preseason this year and have tallied at least one power play goal in each game of the preseason.

This was the third game out of five this preseason decided in overtime for the Blueshirts. All 3 games have ended 4-3 with the Rangers coming out on top against New Jersey twice and on the losing end tonight.

Mika Zibanejad notched three points (two goals, one assist), including two power play points (one power play goal, one power play assist) and led the Rangers with four shots on goal.

Pavel Buchnevich registered three points (one goal, two assists), including two power play points (one power play goal, one power play assist). Buchnevich has tallied seven points (three goals, four assists) in the preseason this year, and he has posted a multi-point game in three of the four preseason games he has played.

Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves in tonight's game allowing all 4 Islander tallies.

RANGERS VS DEVILS PRESEASON POST GAME WRAP UP 9/24

LETTIERI LIFTS RANGERS PAST NEW JERSEY 4-3 IN OVERTIME

A scoreless first period which saw both teams with good chances showed some results for rookie Rangers coach David Quinn as he received what he was looking for in a physical game in which the Blueshirts answered the call for playing a rougher style and sticking up for each other.

The  Rangers opened the scoring in the second period with a goal from rookie Steven Fogarty which was answered back just a minute later by NJ's Kyle Palmieri after veteran defenseman Marc Staal was pick pocketed along the boards by Taylor Hall to tie the game 1-1. Another Rangers rookie, would give the Rangers back the lead as Timothy Gettinger picked up his first preseason goal. The Rangers defense holding New Jersey to single digit shots on goal during the second would take the 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Starting the second period on the power play with John Quenneville finishing off a 2 minute minor for tripping at the end of the second the Rangers pulled ahead 3-1 when Chris Kreider took a beautiful cross ice pass from Mika Zibanejad putting one stick side of New Jersey's Eddie Lack for the tally just :31 seconds into the third. The devils would answer back against relief goaltender Marek Mazanec with 2 unanswered goals form Nico Hischier and the Taylor Hall just shy of the midway point of the period to bring the game even 3-3.

Lack would help the Devils hold the tie making timely saves on Pavel Buchnevich, Mika Zibanejad and Vinni Lettieri to take the teams into the overtime period.

In what started to become an end to end style 3 on 3 overtime was finally put to rest when Rangers Vinni Lettieri off a feed from Kevin Hayes tallied the game winner with just 1:07 left to go in the period.

This marked the 2nd straight overtime win of the preseason for New York over the Devils, the first coming September 17 by the same score of 4-3.

Matt Beleskey and Cody McLeod answered coach Quinn's call for toughness, both taking on New Jersey's 6' 4" tough guy Eric Gryba. Beleskey's fight was short with Beleskey falling awkwardly on his shoulder to end the scrum. Beleskey would not return after the first period. McLeod held his own and had the slight edge in the 2nd period battle.

Henrik Lundqvist looked more like himself than in the preseason home opener last Wednesday in the loss to Philadelphia, allowing one goal and stopping 13 shots the Devils threw at him in 39:54 of total ice time. Mazanec who is battling for the backup spot behind Lundqvist with Alexandar Georgiev and Dustin Tokarski was shakey at first allowing 2 goals on 11 shots but made more than one timely save at the end of the third and through 3:53 of overtime.

Jesper Fast was held out for precautionary reasons after a hit in the second period. Quinn updated after the game that Fast was okay and will be back in the lineup. As far as Matt  Beleskey who is battling for a 4th line spot, no update was given on his shoulder injury.

The Rangers return to action on Wednesday hosting the Islanders and on Thursday traveling to Philadelphia to finish the preseason.

Rangers host New Jersey looking to even up preseason record

New York Rangers (1-2-0) vs New Jersey Devils (0-2-1)
Madison Square Garden, NYC
TV: MSG+, NHLN-US

The Rangers look to get back to a .500 preseason record tonight against the win-less New Jersey Devils. The Rangers led by 2 goals from Lias Andersson in their preseason opener win against New Jersey last Monday 4-3 in Overtime will face their "Hudson River Rivals" tonight at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers are coming off an uneventful 6-2 loss in Bridgeport to the Islanders on Saturday which saw Ryan Spooner pick up his second preseason goal in as many games. With Alexandar Georgiev and Dustin Tokarski having started the game in Bridgeport tonight should see Henrik Lundqvist get the start with Marek Mazanec finishing the game somewhere near the halfway point of the game. Mazanaec another free agent pick up this off season, like Tokarski is battling for the Rangers backup position with Georgiev.

Today in NYR History 9/23:

1974: Rangers acquire Hartland Monohan from the California Golden Seals (Oakland) in exchange for Brian Lavender.

1991: Rangers Alumni Center Clint Smith is among five men inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Signed by the Rangers organization at the age of 18, Clint Smith matured into a top prospect during four seasons with the Vancouver Lions of the NWHL. He led that league in scoring in both 1935 and 1936 before being brought to the Blueshirts` top minor league affiliate, the Philadelphia Ramblers for the 1936-37 season.

After a strong year in Philadelphia, Smith became a Rangers regular in 1937 and went on to play six straight seasons with the team, including the 1939-40 season, when he captured his only Stanley Cup title. Between 1937 and 1939, Smith achieved the remarkable distinction of playing 85 consecutive games without being called for a single penalty.

A two-time Lady Byng Trophy winner, Smith solidified his Hall of Fame credentials during a four-year stint with Chicago following his last season as a Ranger. In 1943-44, he led the entire league with 49 assists, and in his first year after leaving the NHL, he was named USHL MVP as the player-coach of the Tulsa Oilers and later became a player-coach with the Rangers` USHL affiliate in St. Paul, Minn.

RANGERS FALL TO ISLES 5-2 9/22

SHATTENKIRK, ZUCCARELLO REGISTER ASSISTS IN PRESEASON DEBUT

It's hard to take away positives after a loss no matter how large or small that loss comes but there were a few in the game that the Rangers dropped to the Islanders last night in Bridgeport.

Take rookie Filip Chytil. he showed signs of a player that can take and turn a game around if a brief moment. Although he was a -2 on the night he registered 3 shots in the third period, if it wern't for Isles goaltender Thomas Greiss the end result may have been different.

Ryan Spooner returned to the lineup and recorded a power play goal, his 2nd in 2 games played and Cody McLeod recorded the game's first goal on a deflection in front off a shot by Peter Holland.

Shattenkirk registered 2 assists and had 3 shots, Zuccarello tailed an assist, 1 Shot and was a plus 1, Lias Andersson was a plus 2 with 2 shots, Spooner with a goal and 4 shots, McLeod a goal, a plus 1, 1 shot and 7 penalty minutes including a 5 minute fighting major.

Alexandar Georgiev and Dustin Tokarski split the game in net once again while the Rangers look for their backup to Henrik Lundqvist. Georgiev who started the game stopped 17 of 20 shots allowing three goals while Tokarski who finished the game stopped 10 of 12 shots, allowing 2 goals.
