NEW YORK RANGERS @ ANAHEIM DUCKS: PREGAME NOTES, WHAT TO WATCH FOR

"Sense Of Urgency" For Rangers On California Trip

No one needs to remind the Rangers that their current trip out West is far from a California vacation. Far from it, as the Rangers get set for a mighty difficult three games in three and a half days stretch against three of the elite teams in the National Hockey League--the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, and San Jose Sharks.
"We have some big competition on this Western swing, three big teams, three teams that the experts say all have a legitimate chance at that (Stanley) Cup," head coach Alain Vigneault stated following Tuesday's practice at the Honda Center in Anaheim. "I'm looking forward to this opportunity and this challenge."
All three teams the Rangers face in California this week are playing at the top of their respective games, and they currently fill out the top three playoff spots in the Pacific Division. The Kings, who are 9-2-1 in their last 12 games, sit atop the Pacific with 89 points. The Ducks, an incredible 21-4-2 since January 13, are second with 85 points; while the Sharks, winners of seven of nine, are in third place with 84 points.
Not only are all three teams playing well, they all play a punishing heavy style that won't be easy to deal with on the grueling stretch the Rangers face with back-to-back games Wednesday night and Thursday evening and then a Saturday afternoon matinee.
"We're facing some powerhouses, some of the best teams in the league that we really don't see that often," center Derick Brassard told BlueshirtsUnited.com on Tuesday. "They are all built for the playoffs. Every time you come out here on one of these trips (to California) it is a great challenge because they always seem to have pretty good teams out here."
That the Rangers are on this challenging road trip while in the midst of a bit of a rough patch--having dropped two straight and just 2-3-1 in their last six--just adds to the degree of difficulty the team faces out West this week.
However goaltender Henrik Lundqvist points out that it is best that the Rangers just narrow their focus and not look at the bigger picture of facing three very solid teams in such a short span on the road all the while battling for playoff positioning themselves in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference standings.
"It's really hard to win games, especially against really good teams like these, if you get away from thinking and focusing on every minute, every period," explained Lundqvist, who is slated to start in goal Thursday in Los Angeles and Saturday in San Jose after Antti Raanta gets the starting nod tonight in Anaheim.
"I think that's when we have success, when we have that structure and really focus on playing within that structure," continued Lundqvist. "We have the skill, too, to do the extra things; but it doesn't start with the extra things, it starts with our structure and maintaining our focus on that."
With the Islanders having tied them for second place in the division, the Rangers do have larger issues at hand; and after this trip there will be only ten games remaining in the regular season. There's no question that all puts added significance on this trek through California.
"I am sensing the sense of urgency," noted Vigneault. "If you are a player on our team right now and you get up in the morning and take a look at the standings, you have to have that sense of urgency. I think we are in a good spot about getting the (playoff) check mark by our name, but there's still some work to be done."
A year ago, for the first time in franchise history, the Rangers swept their three games road swing against the California teams; and this group has an especially tight bond, making for two things that make Brassard optimistic about how this season's trip will unfold.
"While it is a difficult trip, at the same time it's also a fun trip to be on, to be away from home with the guys, get some sun, be together," offered Brassard, who leads the Rangers with 25 goals this season. "We need to take that camaraderie you get on the road and play hard together and play for each other. We've had success out West before. We know what it takes."

The Rangers’ 69 road wins over the last three seasons are the most over any three-season span in franchise history. ON POINT
At least one Rangers defenseman has registered a point on 20 of the team's last 27 goals. Blueshirts defensemen have recorded 139 points (32 goals, 107 assists) in 2015-16 and have tallied 82 points (20 goals, 62 assists) in the last 40 games.
RAISE THE ANTTI

WELCOME MATS
Mats Zuccarello is the first Ranger to register at least 30 assists in three consecutive seasons since Jaromir Jagr (2005-06 - 2007-08). He has notched 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in the last 19 games, including five points (one goal, four assists) in the last three games. He has registered all of his 22 goals and 49 of his 53 points this season when the Rangers have either led by one goal, trailed by one goal, or were tied in the contest. In addition, 46 of Zuccarello's 53 points in 2015-16 have either been a goal or a primary assist.
STEP-AN UP

Stepan has tallied 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in the last 16 games, as well as 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) in the last 26 contests. The Rangers have posted a 36-18-5 record in games which Stepan has played this season, including a 23-4-3 record in games which he has notched a point in 2015-16.
TOO HOT TO YANDLE
Keith Yandle is tied for third among NHL defensemen in primary assists (22) this season, and he is one of five NHL defensemen who have tallied at least 20 even strength assists and 15 power play assists in 2015-16. He enters the contest with a five-game point streak (one goal, four assists), as well as a four-game assist streak (four assists), and each of the five points he has tallied over the streak has been a power play point. Yandle has registered a point in 38 of 69 games in 2015-16, and he leads the Rangers in games with a point this season. In addition, he leads Blueshirts defensemen in points (40) in 2015-16. Yandle has notched a point in 17 of the last 24 games (three goals, 14 assists), including 12 of the last 16 games (one goal, 11 assists).
CAPTAIN MAC
Ryan McDonagh is the only NHL defenseman who has recorded at least 30 points and a plus-20 rating in 2015-16. The Rangers captain has registered a point in five of the last eight games (two goals, four assists) and has tallied 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in his last 23 contests.

W2W4: Rangers vs. Ducks 3.16.16

Who: New York Rangers vs. Anaheim Ducks
Where: Honda Center
When: Wednesday night at 10:30 PM
Watch: MSG-Plus beginning at 10:00 PM
Listen: ESPN-1050 AM and NewYorkRangers.com
*****************************************
The Skinny:
Wednesday in Anaheim the Rangers (39-23-7, 85 pts) open up a very important three-game trip through California when they skate against the Ducks (38-21-9, 85 pts). The Blueshirts have lost back-to-back games for the first time since mid-December, falling 3-2 in overtime Saturday against the Red Wings and 5-3 the next afternoon on home ice against the Penguins. They are just 1-2-1 in their last four games and 2-3-1 in their last six. It certainly is not the way the Rangers want to be playing heading down the stretch, especially with the Islanders and Penguins right behind them in the Metropolitan Division standings and both playing so well, or heading into a buzzsaw of a trip against three Western Conference powerhouses--the Ducks, Kings, and Sharks--in a three and a half day span. A year ago the Rangers swept their three-game trip through California, the first time in franchise history they had ever done so. It may have made up for what happened the previous season, in Alain Vigneault's first season as head coach in 2013-14, the Rangers defeated the Kings in L.A. before being walloped by the Sharks 9-2 in San Jose and blanked in Anaheim 6-0. Vigneault will turn to Antti Raanta in goal to start this year's California trip, with Henrik Lundqvist getting the call Thursday in Los Angeles and Saturday in San Jose. Raanta will be making his second career start against the Ducks and will be making his 20th appearance with the Rangers this season. He is 8-5-2 with a 2.46 GAA and .912 save percentage after backstopping New York's 4-2 win up in Buffalo last Tuesday. Vigneault will also turn to a familiar line combination to try and jumpstart the Blueshirts. Rick Nash will be reunited with Derick Brassard and Mats Zuccarello, the club's top two scorers this season, in an effort to ease Nash's transition back into the lineup. That will leave Eric Staal to center for J.T. Miller and Kevin Hayes, with Derek Stepan between Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast, and Dom Moore centering Viktor Stalberg and Tanner Glass. Oscar Lindberg will be the healthy scratch. One of Vigneault's hopes is that Stalberg, who has been playing extremely well for several months now, can bring speed and energy to the fourth line. Both Moore and Hayes were benched halfway through Sunday's loss to the Penguins, so it will be interesting to see how each responds Wednesday night against a Ducks team that Vigneault said Tuesday has been the NHL's best for the past couple months. Anaheim snapped an 0-2-1 skid Monday by thrashing the Devils at the Honda Center, 7-1. However before these past four games the Ducks vaulted themselves from out of the playoff race right into the thick of a battle for the Pacific Division title by winning 20 of 23 games (20-2-1) since January 13. Anaheim currently sits in second place in the Pacific, right behind Los Angeles and just ahead of San Jose. That they have done this despite scoring the third fewest goals in the Western Conference and after starting the season by winning just once in the opening ten games (1-7-2) is quite impressive.
Head To Head
This is the second and final meeting this season between the Rangers and Ducks. Back on December 22 at Madison Square Garden, Mats Zuccarello scored a power play goal 2:37 into overtime to lift the Rangers to a 3-2 victory. Zuccarello also had an assist in the game, while Derick Brassard scored twice and assisted on Zuccarello's goal to have a hand in all three New York scores. New York was 1-for-5 on the power play, while Anaheim was 0-for-4. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 17 of 19 shots to earn the win for the Rangers. John Gibson made 19 saves in defeat for the Ducks, who received goals from Corey Perry and Rickard Rakell. The Blueshirts last visit to the Honda Center in Anaheim was January 7, 2015 and they skated to an impressive 4-1 road victory. Brassard and Zuccarello both scored goals for New York that night as did Rick Nash and Dominic Moore, while Lundqvist made 24 saves. Of course that game was in stark contrast to New York's visit to Anaheim the previous season in 2013-14 when,on October 10, the Ducks skated to a 6-0 rout over the Rangers. New York has lost three of its last four visits to the Honda Center.
Players To Watch:
Rangers-Chris Kreider: Don't look now, but Chris Kreider is starting to get hot down the final stretch of the season. While it has been largely an inconsistent season for the 24 year-old Kreider, he has come alive offensively the past several weeks, scoring five goals in the past nine games, including goals in back-to-back games this past weekend against Detroit and Pittsburgh. Kreider was praised Tuesday after practice by head coach Alain Vigneault for his willingness to get in front of the net, screen opposing goalies, look for deflections both at even strength and on the power play, and score the gritty dirty goals successful teams need. Kreider currently has 16 goals, tied for fourth most on the club, while his 34 points place him sixth on the Rangers scoring list. The 16 goals are five off his career-high of 21 set a year ago, which is somewhat impressive considering the fact that he scored only once through 13 games to start this season. Ten of his 16 goals have come since January 16, a span of just 25 games; and comes into play with just one goal in four career games against the Ducks.
Ducks-Rickard Rakell: 22 year-old Swedish native Rickard Rakell was the Ducks first round selection in the 2010 NHL Draft. He played parts of three seasons with Anaheim prior to this year, emerging as a regular last season. However it wasn't until this season that the 6-foot-2, 201 pound Rakell has become the consistent force the Ducks had hoped when he was first drafted. Rakell has established career-highs with 18 goals and 39 points, and his 21 assists are one shy of equaling his previous best. He ranks second on the Ducks in goals this season and third in points behind only star veterans Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Rakell also leads the club with six game-winning goals, while playing a responsible two-way game and a physical brand of hockey which has long been a staple of the Ducks. Rakell picked up an assist in Monday's victory over New Jersey and he has three points in the past two games (1-2-3). Rakell has scored seven goals in his last 16 matches; and so far this season he has a pair of multiple-goal games and ten multiple-point outings--including a two-point (1-1-2) effort against the Rangers back on December 22.
