NYR TODAY SUNDAY 3/13

RANGERS @ RED WINGS POST GAME MORNING REVIEW

@RNYRF Staff Report
RANGERS FALL IN OT TO DETROIT
Despite Rangers Goaltender Henrik Ludqvist's 40 save return to the lineup after missing 3 games due to neck spasms the Rangers squandered two one goal leads to lose in overtime to the Red Wings.

In a first period mostly dominated by Detroit the Rangers managed to head to intermission up 1-0 over the home team on a goal with just 49 seconds left in the period by Derek Stepan. In a scoreless second period the Blueshirts played a more solid game but failed to hit the back of the net in a back and forth penalty filled period. Heading into the 3rd period leading 1-0 the the Rangers lost their first lead of the night when Detroit's Darren Helm scored on a deflection over the shoulder of Lundqvist on a shot that seemed to roll over the back of Rangers Mats Zuccarello. Just over 10 minutes later the Rangers retook the lead 2-1 on a power play goal by forward Chris Kreider. With just 2:05 left in the period Rangers Eric Staal was called for a questionable holding call giving Detroit the man advantage. With just 32 seconds remaining in  regulation former NYR Brad Richards scored the tying goal after Ryan McDonagh hit the post on an empty net clearing attempt followed by another attempt missing the unmanned red Wing net by Viktor Stalberg. Once again for the second time this season the Rangers and Red Wings headed to the 3 on 3 overtime period. Unlike their previous game in New York where Kevin Klein scored for the Rangers 1:49 into the period this time Detroit pulled out a win 3:03 into overtime on a goal by Darren Helm. The Rangers and Wings are now tied 1-1 on their season series with the tie breaker coming on the Rangers last regular season game on April 9th at MSG.
