W2W4: RANGERS VS. RED WINGS 3.12.16

Who: New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings
Where: Joe Louis Arena
When: Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM
Watch: MSG Network beginning at 1:30 PM
Listen: ESPN-98.7 FM and NewYorkRangers.com
*******************************************
The Skinny:
For the first time in a very long time the Rangers (39-22-6, 84 pts) might have their full lineup intact when they face off with the Detroit Red Wings (33-23-11, 77 pts) in a Saturday afternoon matinee at Joe Louis Arena. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist returns after missing the previous three games due to neck spasms, and he likely will be joined by forward Rick Nash, who has missed the last 20 games with a bad bone bruise in his leg, and defenseman Marc Staal, who sat out two in a row this past week with back spasms. However center Derick Brassard is a question mark to play after missing practice Friday with the flu. Still, should the Rangers be able to get Lundqvist, Nash and Staal all back in the lineup on the same day that would be a big-time boost with 15 games remaining in the regular season and the Rangers just two points up on the third-place Islanders in the Metropolitan Division. Nash skated on a big-boy’s line with Eric Staal and Viktor Stalberg at practice on Friday as head coach Alain Vigneault is intrigued by pairing the two 300-goal scorers in Nash and Staal, as well as creating match up issues for the opposition who’d have to decide how to stop the Staal line as well as those centered by Derek Stepan and Brassard. Stepan was between J.T. Miller and Mats Zuccarello on Friday, while Kevin Hayes centered Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast (who has two goals in his last three games) with Brassard unavailable. If Brassard is healthy enough to play Saturday Vigneault admitted that he has a difficult decision on which forward comes out of the lineup. The Rangers are coming off Tuesday’s 4-2 win up in Buffalo, but have split their last four games (2-2-0).  Still they have won five of seven and seven of ten as they look to hold off the hard-charging Islanders. The Red Wings are in an even more intense playoff battle of their own. Currently Detroit sits in the No. 1 wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with 77 points, one point up on Pittsburgh which has a game in hand. The Red Wings are also four points clear of ninth-place Philadelphia and Carolina. The Red Wings beat the Winnipeg Jets Thursday night, 3-2, on a late Justin Abdelkader goal, to snap a three-game losing streak. They are the only team in the Eastern Conference top eight with a negative goal differential (-9), and their 170 goals scored are the fewest of the current playoff teams in the East. Detroit will again be without the injured Johan Franzen and Drew Miller.
Head To Head:
Saturday is the second of three meetings between these Original Six foes this season. Back on February 21 at Madison Square Garden Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers bested Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings in a marvelous goaltending duel which ended with a 1-0 overtime victory for the Blueshirts. Kevin Klein scored the only goal of the contest at 1:59 of the overtime period, and Lundqvist finished with 22 saves, including a pair in OT. Howard stopped 29 of 30 shots, facing three in overtime, and also benefited from a disallowed goal by Kevin Hayes at 5:54 of the third period. Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play, with the Rangers killing off a pair of Detroit power plays in the third period to keep the game scoreless. Three of the last four games played between these two teams have been decided in overtime and each of the last four have been decided by one goal. In addition eight of the last nine have been decided by just a single goal; and six of the last 11 have gone to overtime. In their last visit to Joe Louis Arena, the Rangers were defeated 2-1 in overtime by the Red Wings last March the 4th.
Players To Watch:
Rangers-Henrik Lundqvist: After being sidelined the past eight days due to neck spasms, Henrik Lundqvist goes back to work Saturday afternoon in Detroit. Though the Rangers won two of the three games Lundqvist missed this past week, there is a sense of relief that he is not missing any more action, especially with only four weeks and 15 games remaining before the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Lundqvist’s last start a week ago Thursday in Pittsburgh featured the collision with teammate Ryan McDonagh that led to his injury, as well as an uncharacteristic meltdown in anger when he shoved the net off its stanchions when the referees let play continue despite him being hurt. Nonetheless Lundqvist returns to action fifth in the league with 31 victories—the tenth time in 11 seasons he has notched at least 30 wins, seventh in games played (57), and tied for fifth in shutouts with four. Lundqvist has allowed two goals or fewer in 17 of his last 25 starts and is 14-6-1 with a 2.01 GAA in his last 21 appearances. In nine career games against the Red Wings he has a 5-3-1 record, 2.10 GAA and .933 save percentage. Three of his five career wins against the Red Wings have been shutouts, including one last month at MSG.
Red Wings-Dylan Larkin: A 19 year-old rookie out of the University of Michigan, Dylan Larkin is penning a true “Hometown Kid” success story this season with the Red Wings. After starting his career by scoring a goal and adding an assist on opening night against the Maple Leafs, Larkin proceeded to register at least one point in his first five games (2-4-6) and hasn’t stopped producing since. Larkin scored his 20th goal of the season Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets becoming the first Red Wing rookie to reach that scoring plateau since current team captain Henrik Zetterberg did so 13 seasons ago. The goal snapped one of the few downturns in the rookie’s season, which earlier included a trip to the 2016 NHL All Star Game. Prior to scoring Thursday, Larkin had gone seven games without a goal and had just two points in 13 games. Still Larkin is among the top rookies in the league this year and is a definite Calder Trophy candidate. Larkin is tied for second among all rookies with 20 goals, and currently leads the Red Wings in that category. His 40 points are second on Detroit and fourth among the league’s first-year players. In his one game against New York, back on February 21, Larkin was held without a point and without a shot, while playing 11 minutes 41 seconds.
