The
last time the Rangers won two games in a row, it started with a victory
down in south Florida against the Panthers on November 21. With a
chance for a second straight win following Wednesday's victory over the
Lightning in Tampa, the Rangers were stopped in their tracks by the
Panthers on Saturday night, falling at BB&T Center 3-0.
The loss concluded New York's three-game road trip at 1-2-0 and dropped the Rangers to 1-7-2 in their last ten road games since that victory over the Panthers in late November. The victory was the eighth in a row for surging Florida, establishing a franchise record.
Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo earned his third shutout of the season and 71st of his career with an impressive 39-save performance. At the other end of the ice Henrik Lundqvist finished with 15 saves.
The Rangers played an exceptionally strong first period, but a late Panthers goal left the visitors trailing 1-0 at the opening intermission. Then New York outshot Florida 15-5 in the middle twenty, but the Panthers scored the only two goals of the period to further frustrate the Rangers, who trailed 3-0 entering the final period of play.
That the Rangers had held Florida's exceptional first line of Jaromir Jagr, Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov off the score sheet and limited the high-flying threesome to two shots on goal--both by Huberdeau--and still trailed 3-0 was beyond frustrating for New York.
Rookie Logan Shaw drove hard to the Rangers net to score off a Corban Knight feed after a turnover by New York in the neutral zone to open the scoring with just 24.8 seconds to play in the first period.
The Rangers had a chance to respond right away in the second period when Jagr was penalized for roughing Rick Nash 18 seconds into the period. However Luongo made two excellent glove saves during the Rangers power play--one on a Keith Yandle rocket, the other following a Derek Stepan steal and quick snap shot from between the circles--and kept New York off the scoreboard.
Shortly thereafter Florida doubled its lead. Lundqvist made a blocker save on an Alex Petrovic slap shot, but the puck ricocheted off the leg of hard-charging Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck and into the cage at 4:41, putting the Rangers in a 2-0 hole.
Luongo made another terrific glove save on a Viktor Stalberg blast through Dominic Moore's screen at 7:38 of the second. His teammates followed by giving him a larger cushion with which to work when Brandon Pirri's power-play one-timer slipped between Lundqvist's pads at 11:18.
The third period was a physical, chippy one, but ultimately scoreless as the Rangers suffered their third shutout defeat of the season.
After flying back home to New York, the Rangers will face off with another of the league's hottest teams Tuesday night when they host the Dallas Stars at Madison Square Garden.
