RANGERS AT ISLANDERS POST GAME WRAP UP

RANGERS FALL TO ISLANDERS IN OVERTIME 3-2

Despite goals by Chris Kreider and Nicklas Jesen the Rangers couldn't hold on and lost in overtime with 21.9 seconds remaining in the overtime period.
With roster cuts looming the Rangers looked very tentative and nervous last night vs the Islanders only putting up 5 shots on goal during the first 20 minutes of play and only garnering 25 for the entire game. A scary stat is that the Rangers almost matched those shots with shots that missed the net. In a game where players needed to prove they belong on the main roster no one stepped up and proved themselves except for a few.

Backup to Henrik Lundqvist, Antti Raanta played a solid game for 64 plus minutes including the overtime period stopping 39 of 41 shots. Chris Kreider had a strong game and assisted on the Rangers second goal by rookie Nicklas Jensen on a beautiful feed.

Both free Summer free agent signings Brandon Pirri and Nathan Gerbe had solid games as well, shifting from center to wing for most of the game as coach Vigneault was trying to find the right combinations for both and to see where they will fit into the lineup.

Mika Zibanejad the Rangers top 6 center once again looked good coming close to 50% on his faceoff win/losss percentage while players such as Dylan McIlrath although picking up and assist also on Jensen's goal didn't do much to improve his standing while vying for the 6th or 7th defense spot.

J.T. Miller looks as though he still trying to find his game and his penalty for hooking in the second period led to an Islanders power play goal. For a player that finished last season playing in the top six it looks as though he might be headed for the third line.

With one more preseason game remaining, this Thursday vs the Flyers it's going to be a rough road ahead for coach Vigneault to make decisions on who stays and who goes. Roster cuts were supposed to come following the game but nothing has been officially announced as of this morning.
