Goaltender Brandon Halverson re-assigned to Wolf Pack

Hartford Wolf Pack general manager Chris Drury announced today that the parent New York Rangers have reassigned goaltender Brandon Halverson to the Wolf Pack from its ECHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners.

Halverson, a third-year pro out of the Ontario Hockey League, is 13-8-0 in 23 appearances with the Mariners this season, good for a tie for third in the ECHL in wins, with a 2.74 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. The 6-4, 210-pound Traverse City, MI native is fourth among ECHL goaltenders in saves (727) and fifth in save percentage.

Last season, Halverson appeared in one game with the Rangers, playing 13 minutes and allowing one goal on six shots, and saw five games of action with the Wolf Pack (1-4-0, 3.42 GAA, 90.2% save percentage). In 24 ECHL contests in 2017-18 with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, the 2014 second-round (59th overall) Ranger draftee was 8-11-3, with a 3.74 GAA and a 90.2% save percentage.

In 31 career AHL games with the Wolf Pack, Halverson has compiled a record of 10-20-0, with a 3.45 GAA and an 89.0% save percentage. In 56 career ECHL outings, he is 25-24-3, with a 3.27 GAA, a 91.0% save and one shutout.

WJC 2019 Prospect Report - Day 4

Here is how Rangers prospects performed in Day Four of the 2019 World Junior Championship on Wednesday:

Nico Gross recorded an assist and two penalty minutes, along with one shot on goal and a plus-1 rating in 19:17 of ice time in Switzerland’s 4-0 win over Denmark.

Nils Lundkvist recorded a minus-1 rating in 18:40 if ice time in Sweden’s 5-4 win over the USA.

K’Andre Miller recorded one shot on goal, and recorded a minus-2 rating in 17:39 of ice time in the USA’s 5-4 loss to Sweden.

WJC 2019 Prospect Report - Day 1

Here is how Rangers prospects performed in Day One of the 2019 World Junior Championship on Wednesday:

Defenseman Nico Gross and the Swiss team lost to the Czech team in the opening game of the tournament. Gross played 16:12 in 29 shifts, and did not record any goals, assists, or shots on goal.

USA Defenseman K'Andre Miller recorded a shot on goal and skated for 16:19 in 22 shifts as the United States topped Slovakia, 3-2.
Swedish defenseman Nils Lundkvist skated for 17:00 in 30 shifts in his teams' 2-1 win over Finland. Lundkvist did not record any goals, assists, or shots on goal.

RNYRF Prospect Notebook: Andersson, Chytil, others named to Carlson Hockey Tournament rosters

Lias Andersson will continue to play with the Swedish National Team in international competition next week at the Carlson Hockey Games. Sweden's three games in the tournament are on Apr. 19 vs. Russia, Apr. 21 vs. the Czech Republic, and Apr. 22 vs. Finland.

In addition to Andersson playing for Sweden, Filip Chytil has been named to the Czech Republic's roster for the Carlson Hockey Games, while Pavel Buchnevich and Igor Shesterkin will represent Russia in the tournament.

SHUTOUT FOR IGOR

Shesterkin posted his second shutout in as many days and was named Russia's Player of the Game yesterday as Russia defeated Norway in the Euro Hockey Challenge.

Shesterkin stopped all 26 shots he faced in the 1-0 win today, and he stopped all 42 shots he faced while posting back-to-back shutouts against Norway yesterday and today.

Rangers Recall Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil From Hartford

New York Rangers General Manager Jeff Gorton announced today that the team has recalled forwards Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Andersson, 19, has skated in 24 AHL games with the Wolf Pack this season, registering five goals and nine assists for 14 points, along with a plus-one rating and eight penalty minutes. Among AHL players younger than 20 years old, Andersson ranks third (min. five games played) in points per game this season (0.58). He tallied his first career AHL assist/point, which was an assist on the game-winning goal in overtime, and posted a plus-one rating while making his AHL debut on Jan. 24 at Utica. In addition, Andersson registered three points (one goal, two assists), including his first career AHL goal, on Feb. 7 vs. Bridgeport. Andersson has also registered 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in his last 18 AHL contests.

The 6-0, 204-pounder began the 2017-18 season with the Frolunda Indians of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) prior to joining the Wolf Pack in the AHL. Andersson skated in 22 SHL games with Frolunda this season, registering seven goals and seven assists for 14 points, along with a plus-six rating and 20 penalty minutes. At the time he played his final SHL game of the season, Andersson ranked second among SHL players younger than 20 years old in goals and points in 2017-18.

Andersson skated in 42 SHL games with HV71 last season, registering nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points, along with a plus-21 rating and 18 penalty minutes. He established SHL career-highs in several categories last season, including games played, goals, assists, points, and plus/minus rating. Andersson ranked eighth in the SHL - and led all junior players (younger than 20 years old) in the league - in plus/minus rating in 2016-17. In addition, he ranked second among all junior players in the SHL in goals and assists, and tied for second among all junior players in the league in points last season. Andersson also registered four goals and one assist for five points in 16 playoff games while helping HV71 win the SHL Championship last season.

Internationally, the Smogen, Sweden, native has represented his country in several tournaments. Most recently, Andersson registered six goals and one assist for seven points, along with a plus-five rating in seven games while helping Sweden earn a silver medal at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. Andersson, who served as Sweden's captain in the tournament, was selected as one of his team's Best Three Players. In addition, he ranked fourth among all skaters - and led Sweden - in goals during the tournament. Andersson also helped Sweden earn a silver medal at the 2016 IIHF World U18 Championship, as he registered nine points (five goals, four assists) and a plus-three rating in seven games during the tournament, and he was named one of Sweden's Best Three Players.
Andersson was selected by the Rangers in the first round, seventh overall, of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Chytil, 18, has skated in 45 AHL games with the Wolf Pack this season, registering 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points, along with four penalty minutes. Chytil's 31 points thus far this season are tied for the 12th-most a player younger than 19 years old has tallied in one season in AHL history. In addition, Chytil leads all AHL players younger than 20 years old in goals and points per game (0.69), and ranks second among all AHL players younger than 20 years old in assists and points in 2017-18. Prior to this season, the last AHL player younger than 19 years old who registered at least 30 points and averaged at least 0.69 points per game in a season was William Nylander in 2014-15. Chytil tallied nine points (three goals, six assists) and posted a plus-five rating in his first six career AHL games. In addition, he registered three points (one goal, two assists), including his first career AHL goal, assist, and point, recorded the game-winning goal, and posted a plus-three rating while skating in his second career AHL game on Oct. 14 at Springfield.

The 6-2, 202-pounder skated in two games with the Rangers at the start of the 2017-18 season. Chytil made his NHL debut in the Blueshirts' 2017-18 regular season opener on Oct. 5 vs. Colorado. At 18 years and 30 days old, Chytil became the fourth-youngest player to appear in a game with the Rangers in franchise history. In addition, he became the first 18-year-old to appear in a game with the Rangers since Dan Blackburn on Apr. 13, 2002 at Philadelphia, as well as the first 18-year-old skater (forward or defenseman) to play in a game with the Rangers since Manny Malhotra on Apr. 18, 1999 vs. Pittsburgh (the contest was Wayne Gretzky's final NHL game). Prior to the start of the regular season, Chytil was named the winner of the 2017 Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award, which is given annually to the top Rangers rookie in Training Camp as selected by the media. Chytil became the first Ranger to win the Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award in the same year he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft since Dan Blackburn in 2001. In addition, he is one of four players who have won the award in the same year they were drafted by the Rangers, along with Blackburn, Filip Novak (2000), and Malhotra (1998).

Internationally, the Kromeriz, Czech Republic, native has represented his country in several tournaments. Most recently, Chytil registered four points (two goals, two assists) in seven games while representing the Czech Republic at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. He also registered five points (two goals, three assists) in five games while representing the Czech Republic at the 2017 IIHF World U18 Championship. In addition, Chytil helped the Czech Republic earn a gold medal at the 2016 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, as he registered four points (three goals, one assist) in five games.

Chytil was selected by the Rangers in the first round, 21st overall, of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Prospect Report: Shesterkin has season debut for the ages

With yesterday's shutout, New York Rangers goaltending prospect Igor Shesterkin became the youngest goalie to earn 10 career shutouts with SKA St. Petersburg.

Shesterkin has earned 11 career KHL SO (10 with SKA, 1 with Spartak) in 62 reg. season appearances, and 10 SO in 53 reg. season appearances with SKA.

The shutout yesterday was Shesterkin's first of the season in his first KHL regular season appearance of 2017-18. SKA defeated Jokerit, 2-0, in the game.

Shesterkin stopped all 27 shots he faced in the contest, including all 20 shots he faced in the second period.

In his last 40 KHL regular season appearances, Shesterkin has posted a 32-4-1 record, along with a 1.60 GAA, a .939 SV%, and 9 SO.

In the first game between the Rangers prospects at developmental camp the White Team defeated the Blue Team 4-1.

Goals by Philip Chytil (2), Ty Ronning and Joseph Snively led White over Blue. First round pick LilasAndersson scored the lone goal for Team Blue.

RANGERS TOP 5 DEFENSE PROSPECTS

1. RYAN GRAVES

The 22 year old 6’5” 226 pound left handed shooting defenseman tallied 8 goals, 22 assists, 69 penalty minutes and was -17 on the season in 76 games for Hartford.

A Blueliner with a thunderous shot, Graves uses his size to his advantage and is a physical type of player.

Hockey’s Future says that he projects to be a second pairing defenseman who may be developing ahead of schedule. Graves would fit just about every need the Rangers have on defense.

The 2013 New York Ranger fourth-round draftee (110th overall) competed for the 2016 Eastern Conference All-Stars unleashed a drive of 103.4 miles-per-hour, which was more than three MPH faster than the next-hardest shot recorded in the event.

2. NEAL PIONK

Signed as an Undrafted Free Agent out of Minnesota Duluth the 6’ 190 pound Pionk is coming off a season filled with both team and individual success with the Bulldogs. His seven goals and 27 assists for 34 points were all career-highs, and Minnesota Duluth captured the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Championship and advanced to the National Championship game in Chicago.

He is considered to be the two way puck handling right handed defenseman that the Rangers have been wanting to add to the lineup.

3. ALEXEI BEREGLAZOV

Bereglazov, 23, skated in 60 games with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) this season, registering one goal and 18 assists for 19 points, along with a plus-nine rating and 20 penalty minutes. Bereglazov established KHL career-highs in several categories this season, including games played, assists, points, plus/minus rating, and average ice time (19:27). Bereglazov led KHL defensemen 24 years old or younger in assists and tied for first among KHL defensemen 24 years old or younger in points this season. He led Metallurg in blocked shots (68) in 2016-17. In addition, Bereglazov ranked second among team defensemen in shots on goal (111), tied for second among team defensemen in assists, ranked third among team defensemen in points, and ranked fourth among team defensemen in average ice time and plus/minus rating.

The 6-4, 205-pounder also skated in eight playoff games with Metallurg this season, registering six assists and a plus-eight rating. Bereglazov tied for fifth among KHL defensemen in assists, ranked sixth among KHL defensemen in plus/minus rating, and tied for 10th among KHL defensemen in points in the playoffs this year. In addition, he ranked fourth on Metallurg in average ice time (20:19), and ranked fifth on the team in assists and plus/minus rating in the playoffs.

4. SERGEI ZBOROVSKIY

Zborovskiy a 20 year old 6’4” 200 pound left handed shooting defenseman was drafted 79th overall in 2015 by the Rangers and signed to an ELC in 2016.

Playing for the Regina Pats of the WHL last season Zborovskiy tallied 7 goals and 33 assists in 63 games along with 64 penalty minutes and a plus rating of 72.

Originally touted as a stay at home defenseman due to his size, he has picked up his offensive game in the past three seasons surpassing career offensive highs.

5. SEAN DAY

Drafted in the 3rd round of the 2016 entry draft the 6’2” 231 pound left handed defenseman signed an ELC with the Rangers in March.

Day split his time last season with the Mississauga Steelheads and the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL collecting 15 goals and 22 assists in 63 games combined along with 20 penalty minutes and a plus 11 rating.

Said to make everyone look like they’re in slow motion, when he wants to. Day also has a tremendous ability to jump into the rush and add to the offense that way. Day can close gaps so quickly with his reach and his exceptional skating ability, which he almost uses to a fault.

Igor Shesterkin, G, SKA St. Petersburg (KHL) - Shesterkin was named the Best Goaltender of the KHL Conference Finals, as he helped SKA complete a four-game sweep against Lokomotiv and advance to the Gagarin Cup Finals. The Rangers' fourth round pick (118th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft posted a 3-0-0 record, along with a 0.55 GAA and a .985 SV% (65 saves on 66 shots) in three appearances in the series. Shesterkin led all goaltenders in the Conference Finals in GAA and SV%.

Tim Gettinger, LW, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL) - Gettinger registered three points (two goals, one assist), including the game-winning goal, and was selected as the game's First Star, as he helped Sault Ste. Marie conclude its first round series in Game 5 against Flint on Mar. 31. The Rangers' fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft recorded five points (three goals, two assists), 14 shots on goal, and a plus-five rating in the series. Gettinger tied for second on Sault Ste. Marie in goals and points, and ranked fourth in shots on goal in the series. Gabriel Fontaine, C, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL) - Fontaine registered his second overtime goal of Rouyn-Noranda's first round series against Halifax, as he recorded the game-winning goal 26 seconds into the third overtime period in Game 5 on Mar. 31 to give the Huskies a three-games-to-two lead in the series. The Rangers' sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft has recorded four points (two goals, two assists) in five games thus far in the series, and he leads the QMJHL in overtime goals this year.

Emerging from the Pack

Nicklas Jensen recorded four points (two goals, two assists) in three games last week, and he posted a multi-point game in two of the three contests. Jensen has established AHL career-highs in goals (28), assists (22), and points (50) this season, and he ranks fourth in the AHL in goals in 2016-17.

Vince Pedrie agreed to terms on a contract with the Rangers on Mar. 28. He skated in three games with Hartford last week, registering 12 shots on goal, and the three contests were the first professional games of his career. The 23-year-old defenseman skated in 39 games with the Penn State University Nittany Lions this season, registering eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points, along with a plus-27 rating and 24 penalty minutes. He was selected to the Big Ten First All-Star Team and the Big Ten All-Tournament Team, as he helped Penn State win the Big Ten Championship. Pedrie's 30 points in 2016-17 were the most a defenseman recorded in one season in Penn State's history. Pedrie ranked third in the NCAA in shots on goal (167) and tied for fifth in the NCAA in plus/minus rating in 2016-17.

Vinni Lettieri made his AHL/professional debut on Mar. 31 vs. Hershey, and he recorded four shots on goal in three games with the Wolf Pack last week.

The Rangers' sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft has recorded 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) and a plus-11 rating in 28 career QMJHL playoff contests.

Ryan Gropp, LW, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) - Gropp recorded two points (one goal, one assist) in two games last week, helping the Thunderbirds win the first two games of their playoff series against Tri-City. The Rangers' second round pick (41st overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft registered a power play goal in the first period of Game 1 of the series on Mar. 24, and he has now recorded 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 28 career WHL playoff games. Taylor Beck tallied a point in three of four games last week, recording three points (two goals, one assist). Beck has recorded 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 11 games with the Wolf Pack. He ranks second in the AHL in points (62) and is tied for second in the AHL in assists (44) this season.

Marek Hrivik recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in four games last week, and he registered three assists and a plus-three rating on Mar. 25 vs. Bridgeport. Prospect Update: Gropp Nets Hat Trick for Seattle

Ryan Gropp scored all three of Seattle's goals Tuesday night in their 3-1 victory over Victoria in the Western Hockey League.

The three goals extended Gropp's point streak to nine games, during which he has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points. Overall, the 2015 second round pick has 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points in 46 games with the Thunderbirds this season.

Rangers are the first NHL team that has recorded five or more goals in 10 of its first 20 games in one season since OTT and PHI in 2005-06.
