Three Stars of the Week


Sean Day, D, Windsor Spitfires (OHL) - Day agreed to terms on an entry-level contract with the Rangers on Mar. 8. In three games last week, the Rangers' third round pick (81st overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft tallied four points (one goal, three assists). Day notched three points (one goal, two assists), including an assist on the game-winning goal in overtime, on Mar. 12 vs. Flint. He has registered 35 points (15 goals, 20 assists) and a plus-16 rating in 60 OHL games this season, and he is tied for sixth among OHL defensemen in goals in 2016-17.

 

Ryan Gropp, LW, Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL) - Gropp tallied a point in all three games last week, registered five points (one goal, four assists) and a plus-four rating in the three contests. The Rangers' second round pick (41st overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft has recorded a point in 24 of the last 26 games, tallying 50 points (21 goals, 29 assists) over the span. In addition, Gropp has recorded a point in 29 of the last 32 contests, registering 56 points (23 goals, 33 assists) in those 32 games. Gropp leads Seattle in goals (32) and points (80), and ranks second on the team in assists (48) this season. In addition, he has established WHL career-highs in assists and points in 2016-17, and he is two goals away from tying his career-high.

 

Gabriel Fontaine, C, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL) - Fontaine registered his first career QMJHL hat trick, established a single-game QMJHL career-high with four points (three goals, one assist), and posted a plus-three rating on Mar. 12 vs. Val-d'Or. The Rangers' sixth round pick (171st overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft has established QMJHL career-highs in goals (23), assists (29), and points (52) this season, and his plus-32 rating is also currently a QMJHL career-high. Fontaine has recorded an assist/point in five of the last eight games (three goals, five assists over the span). In addition, he has tallied a point in 12 of the last 20 games (five goals, 10 assists), as well as in 18 of the last 27 games (14 goals, 13 assists). He ranks fourth on the Huskies in points and ranks fifth on the team in plus/minus rating this season.


Emerging from the Pack


Taylor Beck registered three points (two goals, one assist) in three games last week. He has recorded four points (two goals, two assists) in five games with the Wolf Pack, and he ranks second in the AHL in assists (39) and points (54) this season.

 

Marek Hrivik tallied two points (one goal, one assist) and posted a plus-two rating on Mar. 12 at Bridgeport. He has recorded 28 points (13 goals, 15 assists) and a plus-three rating in 41 AHL games this season.

 

Steven Fogarty recorded two points (one goal, one assist) on Mar. 11 at Springfield. The Rangers' third round pick (72nd overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has registered four points (two goals, two assists) in the last six games and six points (three goals, three assists) in the last 10 contests.


Quick Hits


Tim Gettinger, LW, Sault Ste. Marie  (OHL) - Gettinger registered three points (two goals, one assist) and a plus-three rating in three games last week. The Rangers' fifth round pick (141st overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft recorded two points (one goal, one assist), including his 30th goal of the season, on Mar. 12 at Sudbury. Gettinger has recorded a point in seven of the last nine games, tallying 12 points (seven goals, five assists) over the span. Gettinger has established OHL career-highs in goals (30) and points (52) this season, and he has tied his OHL career-high in assists in 2016-17 (22). In addition, he ranks third on the Greyhounds in goals and is tied for fourth on the team in plus/minus rating (plus-24) this season.

 

Ty Ronning, RW, Vancouver Giants (WHL) - Ronning recorded an assist/point in both games he played last week. The Rangers' seventh round pick (201st overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft has notched a point in seven of the last nine games, tallying nine points (three goals, six assists) over the span. In addition, Ronning has registered a point in 18 of the last 31 games, recording 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) during the stretch. He leads the Giants in goals (24) and points (52), and is tied for second on the team in assists (28) this season. Ronning has tallied at least 50 points in each of the last two seasons, and he has tied his WHL career-high in assists in 2016-17.

 

Tyler Wall, G, UMass-Lowell River Hawks (NCAA) - Wall posted a 2-1 record, along with a 2.07 GAA to help UMass-Lowell defeat the University of New Hampshire, two games to one, in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. The Rangers' sixth round pick (174th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft also posted a 2-0 record, along with a 1.56 GAA and a .935 SV% in the final two games of the series when facing elimination. In 33 appearances this season, Wall has posted a 23-9-1 record, along with a 2.11 GAA, a .916 SV%, and 1 SO. He is tied for third in the NCAA - and leads all freshmen goaltenders - in wins this season.
