NEW YORK RANGERS POST GAME WRAP UP: RANGERS vs SHARKS 3.28.17

Rangers Clinch Playoff Spot but Fall in OT to Sharks 5-4

Coming into tonight's game only 1 point out of playoff position the Rangers looked a bit off at the start of tonight's game in San Jose.

Unable to get a solid footing the Rangers quickly fell behind 1-0 to the Sharks. J.T. Miller picked up his first goal of the game to tie it at one but the Rangers were unable to hold the lead, while coming to the end of their power play they were burned for a short handed goal by San Jose and headed to the locker room down 2-1 after one.

Falling further behind in the second period 3-1, Derek Stepan was able to score a huge confidence boosting power play goal near the end of the period to make it 3-2 heading into intermission.

Riding the late second period goal the Rangers were able to capitalize within the first five minutes. Jesper Fast redirected a Ryan McDonagh shot behind San Jose's goalie Jones to tie the game at three. Just a few minutes later J.T. Miller put the Rangers in the lead 4-3 with his second goal of the game. The Rangers were able to hold the lead until the 17:45 mark when the Sharks tied the game 4-4 eventually sending the game to overtime.

In the Overtime Period after a missed breakaway by Michael Grabner and Mika Zibanejad ringing one off the crossbar of the San Jose goal Nick Holden took a holding the stick penalty to put the Rangers on the penalty kill with 2:35 to go which the Sharks were able to capitalize upon and take the win with a power play goal ending the game 5-4.

With the Overtime Loss the Rangers gained a point in the standings and clinched a playoff spot for the 2017 NHL Playoffs.

J.T. Miller picked up his 22nd goal of the season tying his career high. Rookie Brady Skjei picked up 3 assists in the game to up his total to 33 on the season. Derek Stepan extended his goal scoring streak to three games.

The Rangers now return home having dropped 2 out of three games in California and take on the Penguins Friday at Madison Square Garden to end March.
