Today in NYR History 10/11:


1950: Neil Colville makes his head coaching debut, becoming the fourth head coach in team history.


1961: Doug Harvey, serving as player-coach, scores a goal in his debut to help the Rangers defeat the Bruins 6-2 at Boston Garden.


1978: Phil Esposito turns the captaincy over to Dave Maloney. 
At 22 years and 72 days old, Maloney becomes the youngest captain in team history.


1988: The Rangers acquire Brian Lawton, Igor Liba and the rights to Rick Bennett from the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for Mike Sullivan, Mark Tinordi,  the rights to Bret Barnett and the 1989 3rd Round Entry Draft Pick (#60 Murray Garbutt).


1997: Wayne Gretzky records his 50th regular season hat trick. 
The Hat Trick is the final one of his career, in a 6-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver. Gretzky added two assists in the Rangers win.


2000: In his first game back at MSG since re-joining the Rangers, Mark Messier scores the game-winning goal. 
The Rangers defeat the Montreal Canadiens 3-1.


2007: The Rangers acquire Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2008 Conditional 7th Round Draft Pick (Not Exercised).
