RANGERS VS SHARKS POST GAME WRAP UP 10/11

LUNDQVIST, SKJEI PROPEL RANGERS PAST SHARKS IN OVERTIME 3-2

Down 2-1 with under 3 minutes remaining in regulation the Rangers came from behind and tied the game 2-2 on a goal by Brendan Smith, the defenseman's 1st of the young season.

The Rangers were playing catch up with the Sharks just under 5 minutes into the opening period when Marcus Sorensen put San Jose ahead 1-0 for the early lead. The Rangers who looked a bit sluggish to start the game after a 3 day layoff were able to tie the game before the end of the period. Rookie center Brett Howden took a pass from Mats Zuccarello on the far side of the the San Jose net skated across the front and put a beautiful backhand shot between his own legs and the through the legs of Sharks' goaltender Aaron Dell for the 1-1 tie.

Another early goal in the 2nd period by Joonas Donskoi on an odd man rush put the Rangers back in the chase until Smith's goal with 2:39 to go in regulation sending the game to the overtime period.

Just 37 seconds in the overtime period in on a 2 on 1 rush Brady Skjei held the puck instead of going to the Rangers usual pass first mentality of the last few seasons to put the puck past Dell for the Rangers and Coach David Quinn's first win of 2018-2019.

Henrik Lundqvist at times was the only reason the Rangers were even close in this game showing the 36 netminder still has some juice left in the tank. Lundqvist while allowing 2 goals stopped 41 of 43 shots on net.

Along with Lundqvist's 41 saves, the Rangers themselves blocked 20 more shots by San Jose. Although the Rangers power play came up short on 2 man advantages, their penalty kill was 100% killing off all 3 chances by the visitors.
