RANGERS DROP LEAD TWICE BUT HOLD ON FOR SHOOTOUT WIN
A scoreless second period a pair of goals by Chris Kreider in the third period put the Rangers into the lead twice. San Jose came back on a 2 on 1 rush goal by Tiemo Meier after Brady Skjei skated in and tried a coast to coast run to put the Rangers up by two. The Rangers rush backfired and the Sharks took advantage, Vinny Lettieri back in after being a healthy scratch missed his assignment on the play which caught the ire of coach David Quinn who immediately verbally punished the young winger but set him out on the next shift.
Kreider once again put the Rangers in the lead which almost held for the final 10 minutes of regulation. While with their goaltender pulled and the extra skater in San Jose went to work. A misplay by Jesper fast in the neutral zone when instead of using the room he had to skate up and shoot for the empty net instead sacrificed his chance with a backhand pass looking for Jimmy Vesey but instead was picked off by the Sharks. The Sharks would put enough pressure on the Rangers for 3 straight icing calls, the third would be the deciding factor as Tomas Hertl took the puck deep behind the Rangers net and skated out front to tie the game at the buzzer, sending both teams to the 3 on 3 overtime period.
Neither team could tally in the overtime period despite both having a power play chance late in the 5 minute period. The game would head to the shootout.
Tomas Hertl, Mats Zuccarello, Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski all missed their shootout chances. Kevin Shattenkirk would put the game away on the Rangers final attempt with the game winner.
Two scary moments for the Rangers on Halloween Eve as first Henrik Lundqvist was backed into by teammate Cody McLeod and did not get up for a few moments. Lundqvist clearly in pain was flexing his neck and left shoulder repeatedly and even made a trip to the Rangers bench during the TV timeout. Lundqvist would stay in the game and was tested early and continued trough the pain to pick up the win.
The second close call came late in the third period with San Jose swarming in the Rangers zone, forward Vlad Namestnikov went down for a block and appeared to catch the shot behind his left shoulder. Namestnikov would head to the bench in pain and would wait until the next play stoppage to head to the locker room, skating cross ice with his left arm clearly dangling to his side did not look good. He would return later and seemed to be okay.
The shootout win was Lundqvist's 60th of his career. He leads all NHL goaltenders in the catagory.
The Rangers now 1-2-0 on their west coast road trip head to Anaheim to take on the Ducks Thursday at 10 PM.
