Today in NYR History September 9, 1993:

Rangers acquire Alexander Karpovtsev from the Quebec Nordiques in exchange for Mike Hurlbut.
The Rangers Fan Club Rookie of the Year in 1993-94 would go on to play 280 regular season games, 44 playoff games and become one of the first Russian born Players in the NHL along with teammates  Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Zubov and Sergei Nemchinov, to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup. Between 1993 and 1998 "Potsy" collected 22 goas and 75 assits with a plus 21 rating as a Ranger. On October 14, 1998 he was traded by the Rangers along with a 4th Round draft pick to Toronto for Matthieu Schneider.

On September 7, 2011, Karpovtsev was killed when a Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger aircraft, carrying nearly his entire Lokomotiv team, crashed just outside Yaroslavl, Russia. The team was traveling to Minsk to play their opening game of the season, with its coaching staff and prospects. Lokomotiv officials said "'everyone from the main roster was on the plane plus four players from the youth team.'
