Today in NYR History September 5, 2003: 

Mark Messier was traded to the San Jose Sharks for a fourth round draft pick. This draft pick ended up being used to select Rochester, NY native and future Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. Messier was a Shark for just a few hours as he re-signed with the Rangers as a free agent.
