In the first period, Stromwall deflects a Crawley shot from the point to put the Rangers up 1-0.
Gropp follows it up with a wrist shot on a rush to put the Rangers ahead 2-0 midway through the 1st. Ty Ronning picked up an assist on Gropp's tally.
Day put the Rangers up 3-0 with 10:11 left in the middle period. Gabriel Fontaine and Stromwall pick up the helpers on Day's goal.
Carl Dahlstrom got the Blackhawks on the board with 3:35 to go in the third period.
Alex DeBrincat gave Chicago their next goal with 2:03 remaining in the third to cut the Rangers' lead to 3-2.
But in the end, the Rangers ultimately held on and barely pulled off a victory.
The next game in the tournament for the Rangers is Saturday at 3:30pm ET vs. the Carolina Hurricanes.
