RANGERS VS RED WINGS POST GAME RECAP

Rangers Finish Season On High Note With Win Over Detroit

@RNYRF Staff Report
Despite being without starters Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi, Mats Zuccarello, Viktor Stalberg all due to injury and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist who was a healthy scratch the Rangers pulled out a Victory to end the 2015-2016 Regular Season.
Looking as though they were going to be down by a goal in the first period when the Red Wings' Joakim Andersson picked up a loose puck and scored on Rangers' Antti Raanta, Rangers Head Coach Alain Vigneault pulled out his coach's challenge just under 3 minutes in. After a short review the goal was disallowed with the ruling that Detroit was off sides coming into the Rangers zone. 14 minutes later the Rangers took the lead when Dan Bolye picked up a pass from Chris Keider on a 2 on 1 rush putting one past Detroit's Jimmy Howard. The Rangers headed into the locker room at intermission up 1-0.

The Red Wings managed to tie the game at 6:42 of the second period which was mostly dominated by Detroit on a goal by Riley Sheahan. Late in the period New York had a scare when Center Eric Staal went down face first to the ice right after a faceoff in the Rangers zone. It seemed as though there was a slight collision between Staal and teammate Jesper Fast. Fast's thigh seemed to hit into Staal's head sending him to the ice prompting both Rangers trainers to immediately come out on the ice. Staal was down for a few moments until he was helped to the locker room. Staal did not return for the 3rd period and wa said to be held out of the game for precautionary measures. Coach Vigneault did not give an update after the game except that Staal should be ready for the playoffs. If Staal can't go come the first round then the Rangers would have another addition to an already depleted roster due to injury.

In a tough 3rd period where the Rangers didn't get their first shot on goal until almost 10 minutes in Kevin Hayes was able to regain the lead when he deflected a Dylan McIlrath wrist shot for a goal and the 2-1 lead at 14:22. With 3 minutes remaining Detroit opted to pull goalie Jimmy Howard in favor of the extra skater, 6 seconds later Rangers Jesper fast intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and shot the puck into the empty Red Wings net to seemingly seal the win for the Rangers. But with under 2 minutes remaining New York's Dan Bolye was called for cross checking and soon after Marc Staal called for tripping. With the extra skater Detroit had a 6 on 3 man advantage and was able to get close when Justin Abdelkader scored a power play goal allowing Boyle to return to the ice. The Rangers were able to hold off the Red Wings 6 on 4 advantage for the next 1:30 and end the regular season with a win and their 101st point.

Another solid game in goal for Rangers Backup Antti Raanta making 31 saves, earning his 4th win in four games and receiving the first star of the game honors.

The Rangers moved back into second place which puts them in a first round match up with Pittsburgh unless the NY Islanders who trail the Rangers by 2 points are able to pick up 3 points or more in their 2 reamining games. If the Islanders possibly move ahead of the Rangers, the first round match ups would switch wit the Rangers taking on Atlantic Division leaders the Florida Panthers.
