Today in NYR History 9/5:


1984: Rangers trade goaltender Steve Weeks to the Hartford Whalers for future considerations; 1986 3rd round pick (#53-Shaun Clouston)


2003: Rangers trade Mark Messier to the San Jose Sharks for a fourth round draft pick. 


This draft pick ended up being used to select Rochester, NY native and future Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. Messier was a Shark for just a few hours as he re-signed with the Rangers as a free agent.


2003: The New York Rangers re-sign free agent center Mark Messier to a one-year contract. 
It will be the 25th (and final) NHL season for Messier, 42, who enters 2003-04 with 1,844 points (676 goals, 1,168 assists), six points behind Gordie Howe for second on the NHL's all-time list.
