NYR TODAY FRIDAY 11/16: Alumni Birthdays, Today in Rangers History

NYR Alumni Birthdays 11/16:

Josh Green LW (2003-2004) Pierre Larouche C (1983-1988)

Today in NYR History 11/16:

1926:The Rangers defeat the Montreal Maroons, 1-0, in the first game in franchise history.

The first captain of the Blueshirts, Bill Cook, scores the lone goal of the contest. Hal Winkler makes it stand up, becoming the first goaltender to earn a shutout in his NHL debut.

Perhaps the most ironic event occurs in the third period, when Rangers center Frank Boucher and Montreal's Merlyn Phillips drop the gloves. It's the only fight of Boucher's 10-year NHL career; he goes on to win the Lady Byng Trophy as the League's most gentlemanly player seven times in eight years. Lady Byng finally gives him the original trophy to keep and has a second one made

1950: The Rangers acquire Ed Harrison and Zellio Toppazzini from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Dunc Fisher and future considerations (loan of Alex Kaleta to Hershey-AHL).

1967: The Rangers play their first game in Philadelphia, falling to the Flyers, 3-2.

1971: The Rangers acquire Gary Doak and Jim Wiste from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Dave Balon, Wayne Connelly and Ron Stewart.

1993: In the Rangers’ first contest with the Florida Panthers, the Blueshirts come away with a 4-2 victory.
Brian Leetch records a goal and an assist in the victory.

2003: Mark Messier records the last shorthanded goal of his career and his 23rd as a Ranger.
The tally is most of any Blueshirt. Messier adds an assist in the contest, a 2-2 tie with the Chicago Blackhawks.
