RANGERS BLANK ISLANDERS AT MSG FOR 7th STRAIGHT HOME WIN
Cytil extends streak to 5 games, Georgiev shines in 5-0 win
39 seconds into the opening period is all it took for Filip Chytil to score his 5th goal in just as many games and his second game winning tally in the last two games. Backed by 29 saves from Alexandar Georgiev and 5 goals from 5 different Blueshirts the Rangers got a bit of revenge from last Thursdays 7-5 loss in Brooklyn to the Islanders with the 5-0 victory.
The Rangers continued in the first period with goals from Cody McLeod, his first as a Ranger and rookie defenseman Neal Pionk. McLeod would leave the game in the second period following an altercation with Isles tough guy Ross Johnston. McLeod suffered an injury to his left hand in the fight near the midway of the period and did not return for the remainder of the game.
Kevin Hayes would add a goal in the second period and Chris Kreider scored the 5th unanswered goal of the game in the third.
Along with the assist on Chytil's first period tally and his 12th goal of the season, Kreider has now extended his team lead to 12 goals and 8 assists for 20 points in 23 games.
Mika Zibanejad picked up 2 secondary assists to keep his lead in the category with 12 on the season. Kevin Shattenkirk who seems to be more comfortable now with coach Quinn's system picked up 2 primary assists for his 6th and 7th. Tony DeAngelo continues to set up goals picking up his 6th assist. Vladislav Namestnikov tallied his 7th helper while Ryan Strome picked up his 2nd and first point as a Ranger.
Brady Skjei returned to the lineup tonight and after a tentative first period, played solid for the rest of the game. Brendan Smith was a healthy scratch in favor of Skjei. "The first time a player has sat not due to his play" according to David Quinn prior to the game. Smith had collected a goal and an assist in the two games he played in favor of the struggling Skjei.
Alexandar Georgiev with his family and friends in attendance from Bulgaria recorded 29 saves for his first NHL Career Shutout Victory. A bit of sweet revenge for the Blueshirt backup after having given up 1 goal (the Islanders 6th and game winner) last Thursday and earning the loss after replacing Henrik Lundqvist to start the third. Georgiev is also the first goaltender of Russian nationality to register a shutout in Rangers history, and was selected as the game's First Star in tonight's contest.
The Win was the Rangers 7th straight at home dating back to October 23 when they defeated the Florida Panthers 5-2. Their last loss on home ice was on October 21, 4-1 to the Calgary Flames. In addition, the Rangers have won all seven games in regulation, for the first time since a nine-game streak from Oct. 19, 2015 to Nov. 23, 2015.
The Rangers have earned at least one point in 10 of the last 11 games (9-1-1 record), in 13 of the last 17 games (11-4-2 record), and in 14 of the last 19 games (12-5-2 record). The Rangers lead the NHL in wins (nine) and points (19) since Oct. 30.
