RANGERS HOLD ON FOR 2-1 WIN OVER VANCOUVER
Chytil Breaks the Ice with First His First of the Season
Already coming into last night's game without the services of team "spark plug" Mats Zuccarello the Rangers received the devastating blow that winger Pavel Buchnevich would be out of action for the next 4-6 weeks with a broken thumb. After a two game benching Buchnevich returned to the lineup and seemed to be coming into his own and finally understanding what coach Quinn wanted out of the young winger.
Starting off with a lineup that had veteran winger Ryan Spooner move dto the top line from his usual spot in the lineup from the third and enforcer Cody McLeod moved from the fourth to the third, things honestly didn't look too promising coming into tonight's home game versus Vancouver.
After a back and forth scorelesss first period where at times it seemed as though the young Rangers were struggling at times the Canucks opened the scoring with a goal from Nikolay Goldobin. The goal edged the ice in favor of Vancouver while coach Quinn rotated lines trying to find the right combination. Even McLeod tied to tilt the ice back into the Blueshirts favor by first looking towards the home bench then dropping gloves with Darren Archibald, McLeod clearly won the fight but his intention was for naught.
The Rangers finally cashed in with Canucks' Loui Eriksson in the box for tripping, Filip Chytil had himself in front of the net to take advantage of a rebound off of Chris Kredier's shot to put one past Jacob Markstrom to tie the game 1-1 and pick up his first of the season. Breaking the ice scoring his first was a bit more sweet as Chytil had just finished a stint to the penalty box just over two minutes prior to the power play tally.
Stalemated in the third period past the halfway mark the Rangers would take the lead 2-1 with a goal from Brett Howden who had gone down earlier in the period with a hard hit alongside the boards in which it looked as though he might have been injured with a hard bump to the shoulder. Howden had just missed games due to a similar hit a few games back.
The Rangers were able to hold the lead and give Henrik Lundqvist his 437th career win, tying Hall of Famer Jacques Plante for seventh place on the NHL’s all-time wins list. Lundqvist stopped 25 Vancouver shots on net in the win.
