Rangers Earn Win Over Dallas 2-1
Vesey, Chytil Lead Blueshirts Past Stars for 6th Straight Home Win
A strong 60 minute effort by the Rangers paid off once again with their 6th straight win on Garden Ice.
Falling behind early in the second period on a goal by Tyler Seguin the Rangers who were out shot in a scoreless first period 7-4 were able to hold the tough Dallas Stars to just 5 in the second and 5 in the third period to give Henrik Lundqvist an "easy" night facing only 17 shots on net, a far cry from the usual 40 plus he has been met with numerous times over the past few seasons.
Down 1-0, Jimmy Vesey on a rebound from a shot by Marc Staal sent a backhand no look shot which caught "thorn in the side of the Rangers" Ben Bishop moving right to left sending the puck squib-ling underneath and into the net to tie the game 1-1 just before the midway of the second. The tally was Vesey's 7th of the season, rookie Brett Howden picked up the secondary assist for his 8th helper.
With the Rangers defense holding the fort the Rangers were able to get some time in the Dallas zone and work on goaltender Anton Khudobin who replaced Bishop to start the second when the 6'7" net-minder was pulled due to a lower body injury.
Just under the 5 minute mark, 19 year old rookie Filip Chytil picked up his 4th consecutive goal in 4 games which eventually would be the game winner. After Brendan Smith blocked a Dallas feed through center ice Chytil took the loose puck and into Stars territory sending the puck past the glove side of Khudobin for the tally.
With "ChytilMania" running wild the "rook" is starting to make a name of his own in his first year now garnering the satisfaction of being the first teenager in team history to not only just score in 3 straight games but now 4.
As mentioned, Lundqvist faced a season low 17 shots, giving up 1 but flashing the glove on a few occasions just to remind everyone why he was anointed "The King of NY" by the fans.
Chytil and Howden have tallied seven points (five goals, two assists) over the last four games; Chytil has recorded a point in all four games and Howden has registered a point in three of the four contests.
Brendan Smith picked up his 2nd point in two games (1 goal, 1 assist) with an assist on Chytil's goal.
Brady Skjei was once again a healthy scratch for the Rangers althugh he did skate in pre-game warmups.
Mats Zuccarello, still dealing with a nagging groin strain did not participate in the morning skate at MSG and was a scratch for last night's contest, his 2nd straight game out due to injury and 4th game of the season.
