New NYR Profile: Nathan Gerbe

NEW YORK – The New York Rangers on July 1 acquired forward Nathan Gerbe from the Carolina Hurricanes in a free-agent signing.

Gerbe completed his eighth NHL season and third with the Hurricanes, scoring three goals and earned four assists (7 points) in 47 games played. He was named Carolina’s nominee for the Bill Masterson Trophy for the second consecutive season. Gerbe was (+1) in 1:57 of ice time before leaving with a lower-body injury against the Kings on Nov. 22, nd missed the following 25 games (Nov. 23 - Jan, 15) with the injury.

The 5’5”, 178 pounder tallied an empty-net goal at the Devils (Mar. 1), and scored a goal and was (+1) in 16:10 of ice time at the Bruins on Mar. 10. He played in his 200th Hurricanes game against the Devils on Mar. 27. Gerbe notched one assist, fired four shots on goal and was (+1) in 12:38 of ice time at the Islanders on Mar. 29.

In all, Gerbe missed 25 games due to a lower-body injury in 2015-16 (Nov. 23 - Jan. 14) and was a healthy extra for 10 games (Jan. 24 - Feb. 3 and Feb. 13 - Feb. 25).

In 2014-15, the Oxford, MI native established a career high with 235 shots on goal, tied for third on the team with Jeff Skinner. He scored 10 goals and earned 18 assists (28 points) in 78 games played, and named Carolina’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy (like in 2015-16). He skated in his 100th Hurricanes game against the Penguins on Nov. 29, 2014, and appeared in his 300th NHL game and recorded an assist at the Penguins on Dec. 27, 2014.

In 2013-14, Gerbe set career highs in power-play goals (3) and shots (221), and matched career highs in goals (16) and points (31), and was tied for fourth on the team in goals (16) and seventh in assists (15) and points (31). He ranked third on the team in shots, and made his Hurricanes debut and notched his first Hurricanes goal against the Red Wings on Oct. 4, 2013. He extended his point streak to a career-high four games with an assist against the Coyotes on Oct. 13, 2013, and scored his third goal of the season in his 200th NHL game against the Penguins on Oct. 28, 2013. Gerbe set a career high with three points (1G, 2A) against the Senators on Jan. 25, 2014, and earned his 100th NHL point with a shorthanded goal at the Devils on Mar. 8, 2014.

In 2012-13, Gerbe totaled 10 points (5G, 5A) in 42 games with the Sabres. He averaged 12:30 of ice time per game, and netted his first two goals of the season at the Panthers on Feb. 28, 2013, matching his career single-game high. Gerbe scored his first career shorthanded goal at the Rangers on Mar. 3, 2013, and Scored his third career shootout-deciding goal and registered an assist against the Devils on Apr. 7, 2013. He missed two games (Jan 20, 2013 - Jan 21, 2013) with a back injury.


The left-handed-shooter has completed eight NHL seasons and three with the Hurricanes. He signed a two-year contract with Carolina on June 24, 2014. Gerbe Has represented the United States in international competition including the 2004 and 2005 U18 World Junior Championships and the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships. He averaged more than a point a game (1.08) in three seasons of collegiate hockey at Boston College, totaling 133 points (71g, 62a) in 123 games, ad helped the Eagles reach the championship game three consecutive seasons, winning the NCAA title in 2008. He registered 11 goals and seven assists (18 points) in 39 games during his freshman season at Boston College.

Gerbe was drafted 142 overall in the fifth round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Sabres. He first signed with the Hurricanes as a free-agent on July 26, 2013.

Nathan and his wife, Brennan, were married during the summer of 2014. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Blake Lynn Leilani Gerbe, on May, 25, 2015. They also have two Bernese Mountain dogs, named Johnny Cash and Tuxedo. Nathan started playing hockey at age 8 and his first youth team was Detroit Honeybaked. His family was the biggest influence on his career and the best advice he ever received was to “play every game like it is your last”. His favorite team growing up was Detroit and his favorite player was Steve Yzerman. Nathan’s first job was in underground construction. His favorite television show is Modern Family, favorite actor is Hugh Jackman and favorite actress is Angelina Jolie. His biggest game day habit is meditation, and his favorite musical artists are Keith Urban and Zac Brown Band. His favorite book is Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Nathan’s favorite sport outside of hockey is football, his favorite team is the New England Patriots and the person he would most like to meet is Tom Brady. He enjoys hanging out with his family when he is away from the rink, and his favorite vacation spot is Traverse City, MI. Nathan’s favorite foods are steak and Italian and favorite holiday is Christmas. His favorite former teammate is Mike Grier, favorite road city is Boston and favorite road arena is the United Center in Chicago. Nathan’s most memorable hockey moment was winning the national championship with Boston College.
