RANGERS AT HURRICANES GAME DAY PREVIEW 3/31
NYR TODAY Saturday 3/31: Alumni Birthdays, Today in Rangers History

Today in NYR History March 31:
2004: Mark Messier says goodbye to the NHL by scoring a goal in his final game, the Rangers' 4-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at Madison Square Garden. Ten years after Messier delivers the Stanley Cup to the Rangers in 1994 to end their 54-year drought, he scores his final NHL goal with 57 seconds left in the first period. It is the 1,887th point of his NHL career, now third in League history (his 694 goals are eighth). Though Messier doesn't officially announce his retirement until Sept. 12, he certainly acts as if he knows he's calling it a career. He skates around the Garden ice after the game, waving to the sellout crowd and shedding more than a few tears. Messier doesn't play in New York's season finale on April 4 at the Washington Capitals.
RANGERS VS LIGHTNING POST GAME WRAP UP 3/30
March 30th, 2018
The home portion of the 2017-18 season came a close on Friday with a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In what was an emotional pregame ceremony that included Henrik Lundqvist being presented the 2018 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award and a video tribute to the returning Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi and J.T. Miller, the Rangers said goodbye to The Garden for the summer, as they'll wrap up the season with four games on the road.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead 5:01 into the game on a goal by Brady Skjei, Tampa scored the next five goals, starting with a pair 1:18 apart early in the middle frame.
Cedric Paquette evened the score at 3:15 before Alex Killorn put the visitors ahead for good at 4:33 of the middle frame.
The Lightning opened things up in the third with three goals in the first 2:38.
Miller, who had an assist on Paquette's goal, scored a power play 35 seconds into the third. It was his ninth goal as a member of the Lightning. Paquette notched his second of the game 1:18 later that made it 4-1.
Brayden Point finished the scoring when his wrist shot from the slot made it 5-1.
"I don't know. A few minutes of bad play," Mika Zibanejad said. "They're a good team and they're going to take advantage of their chances and that's what happened."
Filip Chytil scored his first NHL goal at 8:14 of the third when Mats Zuccarello shot went wide, but caromed back in front for Chytil to bury into the empty net. It was his second point in three games following his recall from Hartford (AHL) on Sunday.
The 18-year-old said he's gaining confidence with each passing game in the NHL.
"I think I'm more confident after every shift and I love scoring goals," he said. "It's something special and I'm really glad my first goal was in Madison Square Garden."
Coach Alain Vigneault said too many of his players "had an off night," but Chytil's production was a positive he could take.
"I thought Filip had a good game. He showed some real good speed, he had a couple good looks, got his first NHL goal," Vigneault said. "From an individual stand point, that was a good step today."
Chris Kreider added his 16th of the season to make it a two-goal lead with 3:29 remaining in the game, but Point's second of the night into an empty net iced the game with 1:44 to play, and Girardi scored another with 34 seconds remaining.
Now the Rangers close out the season with four straight on the road, starting with Carolina Saturday night. And while they'll be local with tilts against the Devils, Islanders and Flyers, there was disappointment in not leaving The Garden with two points.
"The season has been tough," Zibanejad said. "It hasn't been as we were hoping and as we wanted. To not be able to finish it off with a win in front of the fans is disappointing. It's unfortunate to not give them something and get ourselves a good feeling at least winning the last home game. It's just empty."
AND THE STEVEN McDONALD EXTRA EFFORT AWARD GOES TO...
March 30th, 2018
The New York Rangers announced that Henrik Lundqvist has been named the winner of the 2017-18 Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award, presented by Northwell Health.
The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award is presented annually to the Ranger who, as chosen by the fans, "goes above and beyond the call of duty." This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. The award, which has been given annually since the 1987-88 season, bears the name of New York City Police Detective Steven McDonald, who was shot and injured in the line of duty on July 12, 1986 and passed away on January 10, 2017.
This year, in honor of Steven's legacy, Rangers fans had an opportunity to nominate those who continuously give the Extra Effort in their community. A select group of these nominees will be honored tonight as part of the Rangers' Blueshirts of Our Backs Ceremony following tonight's game.
Lundqvist has appeared in 60 games with the Rangers this season, posting a 25-24-7 record, along with a 2.94 GAA, a .915 SV%, and 2 SO. He represented the Rangers at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game, as he made his fourth career NHL All-Star appearance (2009, 2011, 2012, 2018). Lundqvist ranks fifth in the NHL in saves (1,748) and is tied for sixth in the NHL in appearances this season. He has made at least 30 saves in 34 of his 60 appearances thus far in 2017-18, and he ranks second among NHL goaltenders in games with 30 or more saves this season.
The 6-1, 180-pounder has accomplished several feats during the 2017-18 season. Lundqvist made 50 saves and earned a win in two consecutive games on Feb. 28, 2018 at Vancouver and Mar. 2, 2018 at Calgary, becoming the first goaltender in NHL history to make at least 50 saves and register a win in two straight contests. Lundqvist also became the first goaltender in NHL history to earn 20 or more wins in each of his first 13 NHL seasons, and he also became the first goaltender in NHL history to register at least 20 wins in 13 consecutive seasons at any point in a career.
The Are, Sweden, native has appeared in 802 career NHL games over 13 seasons, all with the Rangers, posting a 430-273-83 record, along with a 2.36 GAA, a .919 SV%, and 63 SO. Lundqvist has established several franchise records throughout his career, and he is the Rangers' all-time leader in wins, shutouts, and appearances by a goaltender. Lundqvist, who also won the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award in his rookie season in 2005-06, is the only Rangers goaltender who has won the award twice since it was first presented in 1987-88.

Ovechkin scores 45th goal, Caps topple Rangers 4-2
By SIMMI BUTTAR
AP Sports Writer
NEW YORK (AP) -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals used a fast start to end a perfect road trip.
Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 45th goal and the Capitals extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Monday night.
T.J. Oshie, Matt Niskanen and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for Washington, which went 3-0 at Detroit, Montreal and Madison Square Garden.
Nicklas Backstrom, who had four assists in a win over Montreal on Saturday, added two more to give him 44 this season. Philipp Grubauer made 28 saves.
"Tonight we got really loose in the second two periods there, they really took it to us," Oshie said. "Without Grub, we might be in overtime right now."
Washington increased its lead to five points over two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
"We've still got to keep going and keep getting points every night," Oshie said.
Lias Andersson scored in his NHL debut and Mats Zuccarello added a goal for the Rangers.
Andersson, at 19 years, 164 days, became the youngest player in team history to score in his NHL debut. He broke the mark set by Mike Allison (19 years, 195 days) on Oct. 9, 1980, at Boston.
"It feels good, obviously," Andersson said. "It's always fun to score and especially in your first NHL game, so it was fun."
The Capitals scored four goals in the first period and cruised from there.
"I think we jumped in right away," Ovechkin said. "I think we had pretty good chances in the first couple of shifts. Osh scored, Nisky's goal is pretty sick. How he scored, it was pretty impressive."
Oshie gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead 2:50 into the game with his 18th of the season. Backstrom skated the puck into the zone and had three Rangers near him when he passed to an open Oshie at the right faceoff circle and he beat Alexandar Georgiev with a wrister.
Niskanen made it 2-0 just 2:23 later. Kuznetsov skated with the puck at the blue line and sent a backhand pass to Niskanen, who had plenty of time to score his seventh of the season at 5:13
Ovechkin scored on a one-timer on the power play from his favorite spot in the left faceoff circle at 8:54. Georgiev was pulled after allowing three goals on six shots.
Ondrej Pavelec replaced him and made 26 saves. It was Pavelec's first appearance since Feb. 9 against Calgary.
Kuznetsov finished off the dominant first period with a short-handed goal at 16:39.
"We talked about this road trip," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "We've had really terrible starts. We put a lot of emphasis on the first period, obviously. We were able to get their goaltender out and obviously built a lead."
Andersson and Filip Chytil gave the Rangers a glimpse of the franchise's future. Andersson and Chytil, both 2017 first-round draft picks and centers, were promoted from the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Hartford on Sunday.
Chytil centered a line with Kevin Hayes and Zuccarello. Andersson centered a line with Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Spooner and got the Rangers on the board. Andersson cut it to 4-1 late in the second period when Vesey worked the puck behind the net and sent a pass to Andersson, who wristed it past Grubauer at 13:16.
"It was a great feeling to see him score his first goal," Chytil said of Andersson. "It was something special. We will talk about it tonight. It's great that he scored his first goal in his first game."
Chytil assisted on Zuccarello's 16th goal at 4:26 of the third for his first NHL point.
"Both kids had a good game," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "It was an emotional day and an emotional game for them, but I thought they played well."
NOTES: Devante Smith-Pelly, Shane Gersich and Christian Djoos were scratched by the Capitals. ... According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Andersson and Chytil became the first pair of teenagers to get a point in the same game with the Rangers since Dec. 18, 1974 (Ron Greschner and Dave Maloney). Chytil played two games earlier in the season with New York. ... Henrik Lundqvist, David Desharnais, Peter Holland, Paul Carey and Tony DeAngelo were the healthy scratches for the Rangers.

The teams play the second half of a back-to-back Wednesday night in Washington.
