BLOWN LEAD ENDS IN OVERTIME LOSS FOR BLUESHIRTS
Ex Ranger Stepan ends Coyotes 9 game losing streak vs Rangers
Another game where the Rangers could not sustain a full 60 minutes of play led to 4 unanswered goals by Arizona. The Rangers started off strong scoring on the power play just 4 minutes into the opening period when Pavel Buchnevich, in his return from a broken thumb opened the scoring with the first of three Rangers power play goals. Kevin Hayes closed out the first with a power play goal of his own with an assist from also returning Mats Zuccarello. The Rangers who were on the penalty kill twice themselves held off Arizona backed by great goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist.
New York Opened the scoring again in the second and again on the power play scored by Mika Zibanejad at 5:48. Unfortunetly that would be the last offensive scoring the Rangers would see for the rest of the game. Jordan Oesterle opened the Arizona scoring just past the halfway mark of the middle frame to take it to the third with the Rangers in the lead 3-1 with a power play goal of their own.
Arizona and the Rangers exchanged scoring chances early in the third but both Henrik Lundqvist, steadfast for most of the game as usual and Arizona rookie Adin Hill, playing in just his 8th game of the season seemed to find his footing and held off the Rangers chances. Josh Archibald would bring the Coyotes within 1, 3-2 with less than 7 minutes remaining in regulation time. Oliver Ekman-Larsson would tie the game with 3 minutes to go, taking the game to overtime once again for the Rangers.
Exchanging chances and saves Lundqvist and Hill battled holding off each adversary's chances until with just 30 seconds to go in the 5 minute 3 on 3 period, ex Ranger Derek Stepan tallied the game winner for Arizona. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Coyotes and ended a Rangers win streak over Arizona at 9 straight.
Rangers standout center Kevin Hayes crashed at full speed into the bottom of the boards in the third period after being taken down on a scoring chance. Hayes crumpled and play was stopped while he layed prone to the right of Arizona's net. Hayes was able to get up but was taken off ice and never returned for the game. No word on his condition was given after the game but something should be announced today as New York has an off day with a 12:30 afternoon game Sunday hosting the Vegas Golden Knights.
